Reborn as a Weak Earthling, I Became the Most Overpowered Mage Alive-Chapter 87: Ch : Making it Back - Part 1
The monster realized that Andrew was not using his full power and also somehow realized that Andrew was distracted because he was trying to be mindful of the two people inside the barrier.
Andrew’s stomach twisted into uncomfortable knots as he saw the monster make a smiling face before it rushed toward the two inside the barrier.
He tried to slow down the monster, but the level difference made the monster much faster than Andrew’s spells. Before he realized it, the monster struck the barrier, causing it to shake.
It immediately prompted Andrew to use his buff on himself.
[All your stats have been buffed.]
The barrier held against the attack, but Andrew quickly noticed that the monster in front of him was not alone as soon as a shadow tried to cleave Andrew from behind.
He dodged in time and noticed that more and more monsters were appearing. Thankfully, they did not look like big-shots, and he was easily able to take care of them.
All this while, the level 30 boss kept smacking its claws against Andrew’s barrier in an attempt to take it down. Keeping up that barrier was a hassle and was starting to take its toll on Andrew’s stamina.
’Darn it-! I will need to drop the barrier if I want to try and make it out alive. But if I do, then those two...’
__________
Angeline noticed Andrew’s struggles, and she felt bad for him. But at the same time, she knew that he was her only lifeline.
She could make herself invisible and head back to safety, allowing Andrew much-needed time and space. But if she did... then what would happen to Shawn’s body? She would have to leave it behind for these monsters to exploit.
And maybe it was selfish of her, but she wanted to believe that she could protect it, even if that protection was just a little bit...
But the monster did not allow her to think like that for much longer. It smacked against the barrier and broke it, causing Angeline to let out a gasp.
She realized that it had been her mistake to rely on Andrew’s powers alone, and she was going to die because of it.
The threat of the high-level boss brought out the worst in her, and she suddenly realized that all she wanted to do was survive. Shawn had just been a means to cope and justify her own inability to move.
But now that she was so close to death, she wanted to try and get out of danger.
Her powers immediately made her go invisible, and the monster looked startled as its claws pierced Shawn instead.
Angeline saw this, and her heart sank to the bottom of her stomach, and her food threatened to come out.
Despite her fear, she pushed herself past the monster and toward Andrew, who could finally fight properly.
His firepower had some punch to it, and the monsters were sent flying by him. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶
"I..."
She opened her mouth to say something, but then paused. Her voice would give away her location, and she wanted to avoid that.
So she decided to silently head away until she could no longer be seen by Andrew, and then she ran back to the base where it was safe.
Shawn had died, and she mourned his death. But at the same time, she could not help but be glad that she had survived.
’Don’t worry, Shawn. I will make sure to avenge you one day and make sure your will lives on. A-And I am sorry. I was not able to give you a proper send-off...’
Angeline regretted the moment in her mind, but if things went back to that moment, she knew she would make the same decision.
So she kept running until she saw the cabin right in front of her eyes. She was so close to it that she could taste the relief and happiness of being home. Just a little more, and-
[Your skill duration has expired. You will be visible to everyone once more.]
"H-Huh... why? Why now? I am so close... I can still make it..."
She ran as fast as she could. Unfortunately, a claw pierced her stomach at the last second.
There were inches between her and the barrier, and she struggled to get closer. If she got to safety, then maybe she could call for help...
But the monster grabbed her ankle and pulled her back.
And that was the last breath Angeline took.
__________
Meanwhile, back with Andrew, the situation had gotten bad. Angeline’s disappearance had caused the monsters to become frantic and search for her.
Luckily, he was able to use his magic freely now, and he was able to defend against the monsters as well.
Most of them were level 18–22, and a single buffed attack was able to critically injure them before he put them out of their misery.
But the main boss was still a problem Andrew had to deal with. It observed Andrew with keen eyes before it suddenly disappeared from Andrew’s field of vision.
However, Andrew was no immature fighter. His battle-hardened instincts predicted where his opponent would come from, and he immediately blocked the attack aimed at his head with his staff.
The monster looked annoyed with Andrew’s defense and tried to pierce his skin, but Andrew immediately cast a close-ranged skill.
The heat from the recoil threatened to harm Andrew as well, but he did not care and immediately cast another spell.
He took the monster by surprise as he aimed for its eyes, and the attack landed, making the boss cry out.
"Tsk, no matter how powerful you monsters get, as long as you lack battle intelligence, it is not that hard to get rid of you."
Andrew sounded a little smug, and a dagger appeared in his hand before it struck the monster’s head. He had picked it up from the base earlier, and he was thankful that he had.
With the high-level boss dead, the other monsters decided not to get close to him. But Andrew just gave them a smile.
"So, does anyone else want to test me next? I will be sure to live up to your reputation."
