Chapter 236 - Date!

"It's rude to barge into someone's dream, Cassandra," Esdeath said in a cold and flat voice, showing no emotion.

Cassandra didn't reply right away. She walked toward Esdeath with slow, graceful steps and then casually created a chair out of thin air. She sat down on it like she had all the time in the world.

"I wanted to talk to you about something," she said, her voice calm and steady.

"And I already said I don't want to talk," Esdeath replied firmly, her tone sharper than before.

But Cassandra ignored her, pretending not to hear. Instead, she tilted her head slightly and asked, "Umm... are you unhappy with your marriage by any chance?"

She didn't ask her real question directly. Deep down, Cassandra was scared that if she said too much, Esdeath might tell Lortell everything. So she tried to be careful and ask things in a roundabout way.

"I mean... maybe you're going through some hardships," she continued, lowering her voice. "Or maybe someone made a promise to fix things for you if you agreed to this marriage? I know people with black hair face a lot of unfair treatment... and I also heard that your family is in debt."

Esdeath's eyes narrowed slightly. Something felt off. "Huh? So Ethan didn't send her?" she thought to herself. "Something's weird here..."

She wanted to scream and proudly say that she had married Lortell with her own heart, that no one had forced her. But instead of revealing her true feelings, Esdeath decided to play along.

She lowered her head slightly, made her hands fidget nervously, and avoided looking into Cassandra's eyes. She wanted to see what Cassandra was truly after.

"O-of course not," she said in a quiet voice, pretending to be shy and unsure. "Lortell really loves me... She even cleared all of my family's debts..."

Cassandra watched her closely and came to a wrong conclusion. "So that's it... Lortell paid off her debts. That must be why she agreed to marry her," she thought.

Esdeath's soft and mixed expression only made Cassandra more sure of her guess. Without warning, she reached forward and gently grabbed Esdeath's wrist.

"There's no need to be scared," Cassandra said in a comforting tone. "I won't tell Lortell anything about this, I promise."

Cassandra didn't know much about Esdeath. She was still new to this place and had no idea how clever and skilled Esdeath was at pretending and manipulating others. Ethan, on the other hand, knew this all too well—he had once fallen for Esdeath's tricks himself.

But Cassandra had no clue. Looking at Esdeath's fake nervousness and unsure face, she fully believed her own assumption. In her mind, she was now sure: Esdeath had married Lortell just for money and support.

"Let me get to the point," Cassandra said calmly. "I want you to... keep an eye on Lortell. You know, watch her daily activities. You might already know about her... 'work,' so if possible, try to find out more about it. If you can, take some photos too. I'll give you a camera from the Awakened Kingdom—it takes really clear pictures."

Cassandra didn't say it directly, but her words were clear. She was asking Esdeath to spy on Lortell.

Esdeath stayed silent, not saying a word. She didn't nod or shake her head. She just looked at Cassandra with a blank face.

But Cassandra took that silence as a sign. She believed Esdeath was thinking seriously and might actually agree to work with her.

"If you get a chance, ask her about her abilities and any secret powers she might have," Cassandra added softly but firmly.

"And why would I do that?" Esdeath asked, her tone flat but with a hint of curiosity.

"You already know the reason," Cassandra replied, her voice serious now. "You don't have to decide right away. I'll introduce you to others who are also doing similar work."

Then her tone changed. She spoke slowly and clearly.

"If we succeed in our mission... I'll make sure you get the title of Archduke."

She wasn't interested in the position herself. She just wanted someone better to lead the region—someone who could help bring the truth about her sister to light.

"Oh, and one more thing..." Cassandra turned her eyes away, looking a bit embarrassed. "Try not to... conceive Lortell's child. It'll just make things more difficult later."

She said it quietly, but her message was clear. In this world, essence stones came in countless types and variety, and it was completely possible. Knowing Lortell's clingy and passionate nature, Cassandra was sure she would try it sooner or later.

After that, Cassandra said nothing. She just stared at Esdeath, waiting.

Esdeath didn't speak for a few seconds either. Her face was unreadable, eyes calm but thoughtful.

Then she finally nodded once. "I agree."

The night passed, and morning sunlight lit up the academy.

Maruti woke up, rubbed her eyes, and let out a small yawn. She got out of bed and went to wash her face and brush her teeth. After that, she headed straight to the academy's public bathhouse. It was quiet there—barely anyone from Class A was around. Most of them had already moved into their new personal rooms that the academy had recently assigned.

Maruti had her own room too, but she hadn't had time to shift her things yet. She planned to do that tomorrow. Today was special—she had a date with both Alice and Kailith.

After enjoying a long soak in the hot bath, she returned to her dorm room. She changed into her academy uniform, then went to her drawer and pulled out a pair of transparent glasses.

They weren't real glasses—they were fake. But Maruti liked wearing them during battles or when she wanted to look smart. The only problem was, she always forgot to wear them.

She smiled and tucked them into the pocket of her skirt.

As she walked toward the classroom, she thought to herself, "Maybe I should start wearing pants instead of skirts... like Esdeath. They do look more comfortable."

When she reached the classroom, she looked around and realized something. Kailith hadn't come today either.

"Ha! Divination really is something else!" she said to herself, smiling brightly.

Soon, Esdeath walked into the class. She calmly walked over and sat down beside Maruti. As she passed by, Cassandra raised her hand and gave Esdeath a small wave, like she was saying hello.

And to Maruti's surprise... Esdeath actually waved back. Just a small wave, nothing more, and then she sat down quietly.

"Yo!" Maruti grinned. "What happened?" she asked, curious and cheerful.

Esdeath sat down beside Maruti and quietly looked forward. Her voice was calm but serious when she said, "Change of plans."

Maruti leaned closer and whispered, "So... did the difficulty get less or more?"

"More, of course. Maybe we'll even fail," Esdeath said without any hesitation.

Maruti grinned. "Nice! I don't like easy work anyway."

There was a short silence between them. Then Esdeath spoke again, her voice low but firm.

"Also, if Cassandra comes to you, reject her. And make sure Kailith or Alice don't join her either. If you get the chance, try to ask them—without being too obvious—if they ever had to choose between you and betraying the kingdom... which would they pick. Try to find out if they're lying or telling the truth. You're free to get close to them if you need to."

Maruti turned her head slowly and gave Esdeath a disappointed look, narrowing her eyes.

"So... you're telling me to sell off my body just to get their help? Seriously?" she said with a bitter tone. "And for your information, I didn't do anything to make them fall for me, and I don't want any relationships either."

But then she sighed and crossed her arms, clearly frustrated.

"I can stop Kailith and Alice from joining Cassandra, no problem there. As for the other thing... I'll think about it," she said quietly. She didn't like the idea. In fact, she hated it. But deep down, she knew she couldn't ignore it. And with the date she had today with both Alice and Kailith... it was already starting to look like the beginning of something she didn't ask for.

"By the way... what's the new plan?" Maruti asked.

"I'll tell you later," Esdeath replied simply.

After that, they attended classes as usual. When class finally ended, Esdeath stood up and grabbed her bag.

"I've packed all my things and I'm moving to my new room. You go enjoy your happy little date. Oh—and don't forget, you have to escort Princess Ravenna tonight," Esdeath reminded her as she walked off.

Maruti stood still, watching her leave.

She stared blankly ahead until she suddenly felt a gentle pat on her back.

She quickly turned around—only to see Alice standing there, looking nervous and shy. She was clearly in her quiet, introverted mood today.

"Umm... today's our date, right?" Alice asked softly. "I made these cookies for you."

She shyly handed Maruti a small pouch filled with homemade cookies.

Maruti blinked and sighed. "Huh? Giving cookies is more like a random love gift, not something you do before going on a date..."

She looked at Alice and thought, "She really has no idea how dating works, huh?"

Actually Alice read a lot of yuri books and had a fantasy of what to do but in the end she got so frustrated that she chose the worst option.

Still, Maruti smiled a little and accepted the cookie pouch. She pulled out a few cookies and tasted one.

"It's nice. It's nice," she said with a light smile.

Alice's eyes twitched. Her expression suddenly turned serious, and her aura darkened.

"Only nice?" she asked in a deep, quiet voice. A strange, heavy energy began to surround her.

Sweat formed on Maruti's forehead. She laughed nervously and raised her hands.

"I-I meant delicious! Super delicious!" she corrected quickly, stuffing another cookie into her mouth.

Alice's aura slowly calmed down, and she gave a small smile.

"Let's go!" Alice said with a big smile, full of excitement.

Maruti raised her eyebrows and shook her head. "Now? At least change your clothes! Let me change too. We'll meet two hours later at Caffali Café, okay?"

Alice quickly nodded in agreement, and the two of them started walking side by side through the hallway. As they walked, Alice quietly moved closer and gently grabbed Maruti's hand like she was holding something precious. Her cheeks were already red, and her eyes sparkled.

"I read in a yuri novel," Alice thought shyly, "that at the end of the date, the couple either kisses or... rents a motel room for the night..."

Her face turned bright red, and she gripped Maruti's arm even tighter like she was too embarrassed to let go.

But the moment of awkward silence broke when they saw Kailith walking toward them from the other end of the hallway. She looked tired. Her hair was a little messy, her steps were slow, and there were dark circles under her eyes.

However, as soon as she spotted Alice holding Maruti's hand, her eyes widened—and her tired look disappeared. In its place came something sharp and angry.

She stormed over and grabbed Alice's hand, pulling her away from Maruti.

"I leave you alone for a few days, and you're already cheating on me?" Kailith said with a deep frown. Then she sighed. "No... I guess I can't be mad. I promised I'd to make sure that, You don't cheat in the first place..."

Maruti opened her mouth, about to shout, "I'm not cheating!" but then closed it and sighed heavily. There was no point.

She looked at Kailith closely. "Why do you look like you haven't slept in days? Even your eyes look a little red."

Kailith rubbed her temples and let out another long sigh. "It's nothing. Just... headaches and a weird uncomfortable feeling in my body. I would get better in no time!",

Before she could say anything else, Alice stepped forward with puffed cheeks. "What do you mean by cheating? We're both going on date!" she said, clearly upset. Then she boldly grabbed Maruti's hand again and even leaned her chest against her arm.

"You!",Kailith didn't back down. She stepped up and grabbed Maruti's other arm tightly.

Now both girls were clinging to her, and people walking by started glancing at them, whispering and giving strange looks. Some were clearly confused. Others just watched with curious expressions.

She had enough.

With a frustrated groan, she pulled her arms free and pushed the two girls a step back.

"Stop acting like kids!" she snapped. "Just... go get ready! We're meeting at Caffali Café in two hours. Be there on time."

She pointed at both of them, her voice calm but firm.

"And I didn't plan anything for the date. I'm boring. So you two come up with something. Got it?"

Alice and Kailith looked at each other, then at Maruti and nodded,
