Even she herself hadn’t realized. These words sounded too much like the concern shown before a parting. Deep down, she was also reluctant to part, even though this separation would last only a few short months at most.
Pei Zhen held the Blue Wind Chime, carefully inserting it into the vase. He pondered for a moment and then nodded his head.
"I do want to use it, just not to buy a villa."
Xu Si had guessed as much. "Then what do you want?"
"Hmm..." Pei Zhen straightened up, his gaze falling on her face, and said crisply, "After I leave, can Auntie come to pick me up a bit earlier?"
He disliked separations, even if they weren’t for long. But he vaguely felt it violated the promise he had made.
"Is that all?" Xu Si was slightly taken aback.
"Just that," Pei Zhen smiled.
He always possessed a unique and contradictory temperament. He seemed indifferent, wanting nothing, yet he was remarkably persistent in many areas—for instance, his studies and his frighteningly rigorous self-discipline.
Xu Si really wanted to understand what he desired, but she had never been able to truly grasp it. However, since it was just such a request, Xu Si nodded, agreeing quite readily.
"Okay, I’ll come pick you up very soon."
The youth’s smile deepened. "Is this a promise?"
There it was again; he had asked the same question two years ago.
After a moment of contemplation, Xu Si said, "It can be considered one."
Actually, she wasn’t sure about the timing herself. But this "very soon" had no specific date, its boundaries undefined. So, once everything was settled, she would hurry to Germany, honoring her word.
Pei Zhen said with a smile, "Hmm, then I’ve used up my reward."
Xu Si sighed, shaking her head with a faint smile. "Azhen, you’re truly not cut out for business. You’re losing out too much in such a transaction."
In the mist and moonlight, Pei Zhen chuckled softly. His gentle eyes were reminiscent of the beauty of spring in March, though his voice was a little lower than before.
"I never intended to do business with Auntie."
There were some losses he was willing to accept wholeheartedly. He didn’t say the last part aloud, knowing such words would put Xu Si in a difficult position; he had always known that.
So, he changed the subject, curiously asking Butler Ge when they could get the photos.
Butler Ge smiled amiably. "Very soon."
「A few days later.」
Butler Ge handed the printed photos to Pei Zhen and Xu Si.
Xu Si admired their photo for a while before placing the group shot on the bedside table in her room.
Pei Zhen, on the other hand, stared at it for a very long time before carefully tucking the photo into the inner lining of his wallet, taking it with him to the academy.
Arriving with the photos that day were Wen Jiaojiao and a rare, violent storm.
Starting at eight in the morning, the entirety of Hong Kong Island was plunged into darkness.
Muffled thunder rumbled from within the thick clouds, and raindrops pounded the asphalt, creating a mournful sound. It was as if the sky and sun were completely obscured, dampening the spirits of every passerby.
Wen Jiaojiao didn’t go to the Xu Family. Instead, she drove directly to the academy’s back entrance, went personally to the classroom, and, along with the driver, quietly collected Pei Zhen. This was because Xu Si had arranged it in advance, and Pei Zhen obediently got into the car with her.
In the car, he looked up at the clouds, a hint of sadness in his eyes.
Wen Jiaojiao was also worried about the weather that day but still tried to ask him lightheartedly, "Have you been to Germany before?"
Pei Zhen turned his face, nodded politely, and said with a faint smile, "I have. It’s a very romantic country."
It wasn’t just Germany. Before his parents died, he had visited many, many countries, so none of this felt particularly novel to him.
Wen Jiaojiao had lived for so many years, yet she had never seen a young man with such beautiful features and aristocratic temperament. He looked even better than the last time they met, his features fully matured, effortlessly drawing everyone’s attention.
After a while, the oppressive atmosphere began to stifle everyone. Wen Jiaojiao started to describe the travel arrangements.
"The weather on Hong Kong Island is very bad today. We can’t fly directly; it’s too dangerous. So, we’ll need to take a cruise ship to another place first. Your auntie specifically chose an interesting place. She said you’ve been studying hard and rarely get to go out, so you should take this chance to have some fun."
Hearing it was Xu Si’s arrangement, the young man’s expression paused. He turned his face, and suddenly his features softened into a smile, a hint of anticipation in his eyes.
"Thank you, and sorry for the trouble."
"Er... No trouble at all, no trouble at all."
Wen Jiaojiao felt captivated by his good looks. Dazed for a second, her mouth twitched sharply. She had gone from questioning Xu Si, to understanding her, and now, she even admired her. Living with such a gentle, sensible, polite, and handsome young man indeed required immense self-control.
She decided to stop talking and quietly watched the driver navigate through the torrential downpour, which resembled a waterfall, as they headed for the harbor.
The bad weather stretched the drive to three or four hours. On the wide roads, three or four accidents had already occurred in succession at one intersection; it clearly wasn’t a suitable day for travel.
When they arrived at their destination, Wen Jiaojiao braved the wind and rain to get out of the car first to find the captain. Large raindrops, whipped by the wind, intermittently struck her coat with muffled thuds, soaking her high heels.
In the midst of the storm, she suddenly saw a familiar car, its license plate a string of numbers she recognized. Her eyes lit up, and she quickly walked over, knocking on the tightly closed car window.
Sure enough, seated in the driver’s seat was her much-thought-of boyfriend—Gu Jing.
However, his expression was grim, and his voice held a note of hesitation as he said, "Jiaojiao, Xu Si had an accident on Ballo Road; she was the target of an assassination attempt. The exact details are still unclear. It was your mother who called me. She knew you had returned to the country and said Xu Si is now in the hospital. The doctors can’t get in touch with her family. Do you want to go back and check on her?"
Wen Jiaojiao’s face turned deathly pale in an instant. She tightened her grip on her trembling umbrella.
She took a few seconds to gather her thoughts, then turned to look at the quiet young man in the car, wondering if she should disrupt Xu Si’s plans and take him back first. But then...
She looked up at Gu Jing. "Gu Jing, could you do me a favor and help me get him to Germany?"
Gu Jing knew of his girlfriend’s deep affection for Miss Xu. Wen Jiaojiao had even asked him to check if the Xu Family had any recent enemies, so he had a rough idea of what was happening. He was also somewhat acquainted with Xu Si, so he got out of the car.
His cool, composed demeanor seemed to mirror the raging storm outside. His voice was calm, yet it carried a note of refusal.
"Jiaojiao, I’m sorry. My elder brother is currently trying to seize control of the family assets, so I can’t leave the island. But if you want to go back, I can wait here for you and personally ensure that the Xu family’s young master leaves Hong Kong Island safely."
This hardly needed any consideration. In Wen Jiaojiao’s heart, Xu Si was as important as her own family. Since Xu Si had no family left, she had to go back and be with her.
Holding her umbrella, she turned and hurried over to Pei Zhen. Speaking softly against the wind and rain, she said, "Azhen, I’m so sorry. My boyfriend told me that an urgent family matter has come up, and I must go back. A boat will be here soon. You go on ahead. Your auntie has arranged everything, and someone will meet you when you arrive. Just follow them obediently, okay?"
It had all happened so suddenly. She had no better solution. She could only inconvenience him a little. Xu Si had said that the young man was very obedient and also very smart, so he wouldn’t get lost.
The pouring rain lashed his face and body. He extended his fingers to brush the cold raindrops from the back of his hand and nodded gently.
"It’s alright, I can manage. Sister Jiaojiao, please go attend to your business. Don’t worry about me."
