Chapter 56: Trap you

The bright lights of the bustling street couldn’t illuminate the man’s eyes, timid as a sewer rat. Without a hint of guilt, he shook off Xu Si’s hand and turned to flee as if he’d seen a ghost.

The casino staff were decent enough, assigning two people to help Xu Si give chase and arranging a waiting area for her.

Her handbag only contained some money; losing it wasn’t a huge deal.

But the real problem was, after checking, Xu Si realized her Identity Card was gone.

She knew better than anyone the consequences of lacking an Identity Card in the Underground City.

Therefore, Xu Si didn’t opt to blindly trust others and wait. Instead, she got into her car, slammed the accelerator, and sped after the man. fɾeeweɓnѳveɭ.com

The night breeze was cool, the light dim. Her gaze fixed on the frail, staggering figure of the thief ahead. Her lips pursed. Just as she was about to catch up, the thief scrambled into a modified sedan. The engine roared to life, tires screeching against the road, leaving a trail of afterimages.

"Oh?"

A smirk played on Xu Si’s lips, her bright, peach-blossom eyes cool yet restless. The next second, she floored the accelerator and roared after him.

Playing a car chase with her? That was simply courting death.

The road grew increasingly narrow. The speeding vehicle ahead, due to improper modifications, nearly crashed into the tall lampposts several times, smoke billowing from its rear.

Xu Si rapidly closed the distance, her speed steadily increasing. The wind roared in her ears, and a thrilling sense of weightlessness, of being pressed back into her seat, spread through her. Just as she was about to overtake them, Xu Si executed a swift U-turn, forcing their car to a halt in the darkness.

Opening the car door, she brushed her hair aside and reached for the gun at her hip, aiming it at the driver of the other car.

"Run. Go on, keep running."

The thieves inside the car exchanged a bewildered glance.

"Her reaction time is insane. The higher-ups in the Triad Society never said she was this good a driver."

"Did you go easy on her? You got a death wish?"

"Bullshit! I was flooring it for dear life! If the roof wasn’t so low, I’d have been standing on the pedal! She drives like a maniac; I couldn’t shake her!"

"What now? We can’t just shoot her."

Taking a deep breath, one of the thieves rolled down the window, produced an azure metal card, and said with a smile, "Here you go, here you go. Just step back a couple of paces, will you?"

Xu Si chuckled, one hand resting on her open car door. She made an arc with her gun, tapping it against the door. "Toss it over."

"Fine."

They appeared to concede, yet their faces showed no fear. Instead, they threw the card behind Xu Si, then slammed the car into reverse, intending to flee.

This charade irritated Xu Si. She had no intention of letting them go until she got her Identity Card back. With two shots, BANG! BANG! she blew out the tires of the modified car.

In the dead of night, the sound of bursting tires echoed sharply, forcing the car to a stop.

Just then, the casino staff arrived and quickly subdued the thieves.

Xu Si leisurely holstered her gun and walked back onto the street. Her slender, fair fingers picked up the card. After a moment’s inspection, she realized it was a fake.

And the real Identity Card had not been found on the thieves by the men from Gambling City.

The thieves claimed it was in their car—the one emitting thick smoke and looking like it could explode at any moment.

Flames began to consume the car seats, sparks erupting violently.

Someone sensed the danger and yelled, "Get away from here!"

Xu Si’s eyes flickered as someone swiftly pulled her away. Then, almost as if by coincidence, just a few seconds later, the car exploded with a thunderous boom. The blast engulfed Xu Si’s red supercar as well, the fiery glare blinding, dense black smoke billowing into a small mushroom cloud.

Everything happened in a flash. Xu Si took a deep breath, still trying to process it all.

In the ensuing chaos, one of the men from Gambling City told her, "Miss, your Identity Card is definitely unrecoverable. These two pickpockets are slaves who escaped from another gang. We will verify their identities and send them back to face punishment."

The ash and intense heat from the explosion seared the skin, and the slight heatwave made Xu Si frown.

After a long moment, she forced herself to suppress her anger and asked patiently, "Does this happen often? Where can I get a new Identity Card?"

"Normally, outsiders without an Identity Card don’t commit street robbery, not unless you accidentally wandered into a restricted zone. In recent years, this is the only street robbery like this, and the first time an Identity Card has been destroyed." The man from Gambling City avoided her gaze as he answered sincerely.

He continued, "In such cases, you could choose to wait. Once we find their Slave Master, we’ll have him compensate you for your losses. That could take a while. Alternatively, you could try to buy an Identity Card from someone else, though that would require luck, as most outsiders don’t have spares to sell."

Xu Si’s eyes flashed. "Isn’t there any other way?"

The man from Gambling City stared at her intently. "There is one other way: become a member of a gang in the Underground City."

He stopped there, clearly unwilling to elaborate. "You can still come and go in Gambling City as you please; we’re happy to provide a place for a beautiful lady like yourself to make connections. The casino is busy, so we must return. It’s best if you don’t wander off. If things get too difficult, just come back to Gambling City."

Outside Gambling City, the Triad Society had no obligation to ensure her safety.

It was already very generous of them to help chase the culprits.

They were unwilling to spend any more time assisting her.

What was bad luck? This. This was what you called goddamn bad luck.

In her current situation, she had only two options: either wait for the Slave Master to be found and demand compensation, or try her luck buying an Identity Card from someone else.

One required time; the other, opportunity.

And without her Identity Card, she couldn’t even think about leaving the city, let alone return to her hotel.

The vehicles continued to burn.

On this deserted street, for some reason, no one came out to extinguish the fire.

Her money and luggage were all in the car, long since incinerated.

Overnight, she had become a destitute, isolated pauper.

"Damn."

Xu Si almost laughed with rage, wishing she could fire a few rounds into the sky to vent her frustration.

But the men from Gambling City were right. She was now an ’outsider’ without an Identity Card and needed to find a safer place.

Unfortunately, once bad luck started, it seemed impossible to stop; misfortunes arrived one after another.

Just as she was about to walk back, she stumbled into a gang conflict.

Only then did she realize that the street she was on was one of the so-called no-go danger zones.

A fierce gust of wind swept down from the end of the street. Someone cried out as they were hit by a gunshot, collapsing to the ground in a bloody heap.

The dense fog swallowed everything. Without headlights to illuminate the surroundings, only the vague outlines of buildings remained visible, along with occasional sparks flickering in the darkness.

People were closing in from both ends of the street.

Xu Si squeezed her eyes shut and ducked behind the only cover available—a dark green mailbox. Gripping the pistol that offered a sliver of security, she thought bitterly:

If I make it out of this alive, I swear I’ll find a way to bleed that damn Slave Master dry.

However, the figures drew nearer, the cold, hard clang of blades echoing their approach. It looked like she was about to be discovered.

Suddenly, a hand reached out from the darkness and pressed down on her gun. CLICK. The weapon was snatched away.

She found herself pulled into a warm embrace. An arm snaked around her waist, while another hand pressed the back of her head, drawing her close. A voice whispered seductively by her ear, an intimate caress of sound:

"Don’t move. Don’t scream."
