Chapter 63: You are the Triad Society leader

The man, wearing a mask that obscured his expression, didn’t continue drinking. Instead, he poured Xu Si a glass of brownish-red wine, his tone seeming somewhat cool.

"Ha, yes. To buy you clothes, I was even mistaken for a woman and harassed."

Xu Si was slightly surprised, a half-smile playing on her lips. "Are there really people so blind?"

She actually wanted to ask how he was harassed, but it felt inappropriate, as if she’d be gloating.

"There are many blind people in this world."

The man’s hand was loosely supporting the side of his head near his ear. Though his voice held a smile, it lacked any genuine emotion.

"So, I brought him back to the Underground City. Trash like him should fit in perfectly here."

"Oh." Xu Si raised an eyebrow, unsure what to say. "How pitiful for him."

"You think he’s pitiful?" His voice was muffled, but his articulation was clear. "Then indeed, perhaps those in similar situations can better understand each other. He’s as pitiful as you were yesterday. Here, you’re both nobodies."

Xu Si remained silent.

She took a deep breath, calmly sipped her wine to suppress her rising irritation, and then said with a smile, "Not pitiful at all. He got what he deserved. You’re not pitiful either. I’m the one who’s truly in a wretched state."

The man’s fingers paused for a moment. He then took a cigar from the table, lit it without immediately smoking it, and inhaled its aroma as smoke curled around his fingers. "I thought you weren’t in a wretched state anymore. After all, in the Underground City, I can give you anything you want, whether it’s from Hong Kong Island or any corner of the world."

The atmosphere subtly shifted.

Since the topic had come up, Xu Si smiled radiantly and said warmly, "Lady Fei Yi, I’m truly curious. You were willing to save me and want to give me everything—what kind of repayment are you looking for?"

The man’s posture remained unchanged. Dangling the cigar, he scoffed dismissively in response.

Xu Si fell silent for a moment, then lowered her gaze, her lips parting slightly. "If you don’t want to say, then don’t."

A few seconds of silence passed.

The silver-haired man tilted his head slightly to the left, a low laugh lacing his voice. "Do you really want to know now?"

"Of course, I do." Xu Si took another sip of wine. "Knowing in advance allows one to prepare in advance. I understand the principle of repaying kindness."

"Ah." His gaze lingered on the cigar and the smoke coiling between his fingers, rising into the air to dissipate silently. His words were soft, almost insubstantial, yet teasing. "But I haven’t yet thought of anything you possess that I might desire. For now, just assume I like you."

The idle talk had merely been a pretext, a way to lead into her request. So, to suddenly receive such an answer—

Xu Si’s grip on her wineglass tightened abruptly, her smile vanished, and she blinked.

"I don’t believe it. You don’t seem like the type to fall in love at first sight."

Xu Si dismissed his reply as a flippant joke.

SZZT.

The man leaned forward slightly, grinding out his cigar in the ashtray with his fingertips. His collarbone was faintly visible, and his entire demeanor was bewitching.

After a while, he spoke casually, a hint of impatience in his tone now, "Whether I am or not isn’t the point. After so much idle talk, you should tell me: why did you come looking for me so late at night? What is it you want?"

The night breeze didn’t reach the Italian-style chandelier, its light tranquil and bright.

Startled by his words, Xu Si almost forgot her original purpose. Prompted by him, she quietly set down her wineglass and stated her request without hesitation.

"I want to go to Gambling City."

"You can go." His voice was indifferent. "You’ve been here long enough to know that no one will stop you. You can take any car you like."

He knew everything that happened here like the back of his hand.

Xu Si hummed softly, the light casting a soft halo on the curls tumbling over her shoulders. "But my situation is very dangerous. I’d like to borrow some of your men for protection."

"Alright. What’s the repayment?"

Xu Si, sitting upright, recalled yesterday’s kiss. She clenched her fists and, borrowing his words, retorted with a faint smile, "Lady Fei Yi, don’t you like me? Would you really demand repayment for helping someone you like?"

She was a rose, carefully appraising the situation, her thorns sharp. When an opportunity arose, she had to seize any chance to get back at him.

The man was completely relaxed. Hearing her words, he showed no significant reaction, merely smiling as he said, "Yes. Because I like you, I’m even more inclined to ask for some repayment."

Xu Si’s expression was calm and serious, her eyes smiling as she said, "Then let me personally say goodnight to you."

Despite her cheeky maneuver, he slowly nodded. "Alright."

He’s so agreeable.

Xu Si’s fingers twitched. Her beautiful, almond-shaped eyes were fixed on him, and as if fearing he might go back on his word, she quickly said:

"Goodnight, Fei Yi. I’ll head back first then."

Her voice, gentle and smiling, lingered in the air as she rose to leave.

The man laughed again, his eyes softening.

He reached out and took her arm, his grip light yet firm, making it impossible to resist.

He said, "I thought when you said ’personally say,’ you meant ’personally kiss me.’"

Xu Si’s lips twitched. She silently sat down beside him, ignoring the teasing in his words.

"You’ve misunderstood. I never imagined ’personally say’ could be interpreted that way."

He leisurely selected a cigar, lighting it once more. "Agree to one more request, and I promise you’ll be safe tomorrow, no matter what you do."

Xu Si blinked, not fully agreeing yet. "What’s the request?"

"The file says you studied abroad. Tell me, what were you doing all those years?"

That strange feeling coiled in Xu Si’s heart again. She suppressed the restless urge for answers she couldn’t grasp and nodded.

"Alright."

After careful consideration, she spoke at length: of demanding coursework, exciting travels, the sights of various places, parties, close friends, and even the types of dates she’d been on and the suitors she’d had.

Suddenly, the man raised two fingers, signaling her to be silent. His voice was a low, dream-like murmur.

"So, what kind of man do you prefer?"

Faced with this question, Xu Si didn’t intend to hide anything; she simply couldn’t come up with an answer.

In that instant, she recalled a face she had kissed in a previous life. It was no longer clear.

She shook her head, going against her conscience as she denied, "I haven’t liked anyone."

The atmosphere suddenly turned cold.

The man chuckled softly. His expression was amiable as he lifted his hand. The next moment, it was on her cheek, gently caressing it, bringing a tingling sensation, like sparks and lightning.

His voice was like an incantation, casting a spell.

"Xu Si, people who lie to me usually don’t meet a good end."

"Who were you thinking of just now?"

That last sentence was heavy, as if it had drifted through his heart countless times, yet this was the first time he had voiced it.

This reaction isn’t right.

Xu Si raised an eyebrow. She didn’t consider herself some naive schoolgirl, unable to discern the subtle, bittersweet undertones in his words. Her heart pounded as she looked at him, her gaze probing.

"If you act this way, I might really mistake it for you liking me, rather than you having some other motive."

After a long pause, that ethereal, almost disembodied voice let out a soft chuckle, asking her in a way that was both elusive and direct.

"What do you think? I own the entire Triad Society. Half of Hong Kong Island, where you are, is under my control. Tell me, besides you yourself, what else could possibly be worth my interest?"

He owns the Triad Society?

Xu Si frowned. She ignored the gravity in his words, her mind completely preoccupied with that single phrase—I own the entire Triad Society.

A chill ran down her spine. The implications were self-evident.

He’s the mysterious leader of the Triad Society?!
