Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 444: Adrienne’s Return (2)
"Lennox!" Adrienne opened her eyes and sat up on the bed.
The dim light within the room and the rain outside the window weren’t what she expected to see when she opened her eyes.
"Addie? The familiar voice of her husband spoke with concern.
Adrienne turned to her side and saw her husband seated beside the bed, looking worried and startled by her sudden outburst. Lennox looked anxious and in disbelief upon seeing her awake. His eyes were dark, but she could see a glimmer of relief in them.
"What happened, Addie? You scared me," he said, his voice filled with genuine concern. "You are awake. Are you hurt anywhere, Addie? Is there something you need? Did you have a nightmare?"
"Len..." She looked at him in a daze. The past life that played before her eyes felt like a dream.
Adrienne felt her heart filled with grief and bitterness after witnessing how he led a lonely life in their previous lives. This man, who never knew her, wished her happiness in his last breath. She felt undeserving of his love, yet she couldn’t help but long for it. Their shared past weighed heavily on her, and she couldn’t shake the feeling of regret for not being able to save him.
Seeing her in a daze, Lennox was about to call his mother-in-law when Adrienne suddenly grabbed his wrist to stop him from leaving. He turned around and furrowed his brows before sitting down again, joining Adrienne on their bed. He wondered if she was still Adrienne from the past.
"What’s wrong, Addie?" He asked, gently cupping her cheek as she started to weep.
Instead of answering his answer, Adrienne pounced at him, wrapped her arms around his neck, and cried harder. Lennox held her tightly, feeling a mix of confusion and concern. He whispered soothing words to calm her down, but she clung to him as if he were her lifeline. As he held her, he couldn’t help but wonder what had triggered this sudden outburst of emotions in Adrienne.
Her hold on him tightened as if Adrienne feared he would disappear before her. Lennox allowed her to cry for a while while he held her, feeling her warmth for the first time in a while. His voice was gentle and reassuring as he reassured her that he wasn’t going anywhere. He gently stroked her hair, hoping to provide some comfort amid her distress.
Lennox wondered if something deeper bothered Adrienne—something she hadn’t shared with him yet. He knew he needed to be patient with her and give her the space she needed to open up when she was ready.
When Adrienne finally calmed down, Lennox released him and wiped her tears dry.
"Len, it was my fault. I should have waited for you. If it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t have to live a lifetime of regret." She said as tears continued to spill from her eyes.
"Did you have a nightmare?" He asked, "What did you dream about this time?"
Adrienne sniffed and lowered her head. Seeing Lennox alive and well before her made her wonder if her dream was some sort of premonition. She hesitated momentarily before finally deciding to share her thoughts with him. "I dreamt of what had happened before I died in my previous life, Len. It wasn’t before Dylan and I died that you and Gavin arrived. Gavin was beyond devastated. I felt like I robbed him of the chance of being with his son."
Her entire body slightly trembled as she remembered her dream. It was so vivid that she didn’t dare close her eyes again. The images of her past life haunted her, replaying in her mind like a broken record. She couldn’t shake off the guilt she felt for the pain she had caused Gavin. Adrienne told her husband everything she could remember.
Lennox listened intently, his eyes filled with concern and curiosity. He gently took her hand, offering comfort and support in that moment of vulnerability.
"Gavin took his life, and you were left filled with regret after his passing. Although you know it wasn’t entirely your fault, you blamed yourself for being unable to save him. That burden has been weighing heavily on your shoulders, consuming your thoughts and preventing you from finding peace. You have your siblings’ company with you, but you were broken and alone, Len. I just..."
Adrienne couldn’t stop her tears from falling as she remembered Lennox’s fate in her past life.
"I saw you die before my eyes, Len. You were alone and filled with regret, something that you could have avoided if I had done better but didn’t. I’m sorry, Len. I’m sorry for being weak and foolish."
Lennox’s heart ached as he listened to Adrienne’s words, feeling the weight of her sorrow and guilt. He squeezed her hand gently, offering her the comfort he could give.
"Addie," he whispered, his voice hoarse with emotion. "I can’t fathom the pain you’ve carried all this time. But you have to understand none of it was your fault. Sometimes, life presents us with situations that we cannot control. We can’t save everyone, no matter how desperately we want to."
Tears streamed down Adrienne’s face as she nodded, her grip on his hand tightening. "But I love you, Len. Seeing him suffer like that, I couldn’t bear it."
"And I love you," Lennox said before pulling her back into his embrace, holding her tightly against him as she buried her face in his chest. "I can’t imagine the torment you went through. But you have to forgive yourself. You did what you could in that life, and now we have been given a second chance."
Adrienne looked up at him with tear-stained eyes, searching for reassurance in his gaze.
"You believe that? You believe we can change our past?"
Lennox smiled softly, brushing a strand of hair away from her face. He knew Adrienne needed a lot of reassurance, and he was set to never tire of giving her of it
