Chapter 449: Keep in the Dark (1)

How could Lennox let Lewis off easily after what he’d done to Adrienne? It took a lot of effort for Lennox not to destroy everything around him when he thought he was losing his wife. He could understand Adrienne’s point about dropping the charges against her father, but Lennox could never forgive his father-in-law for hurting her. The pain he caused not only to Adrienne but also to their entire family was unforgivable; there were still nights Noah would wake up crying, calling out for his mother.

The scars left by Lewis’s actions ran deep, and Lennox couldn’t help but feel a burning anger whenever he thought about it. Despite Adrienne’s plea for leniency, Lennox knew that justice needed to be served in some other way. He couldn’t let Lewis get away with what he had done.

He couldn’t do anything against Lewis while he was being detained, but now that he was about to be free, Lennox knew he had a chance to settle the scores with his father-in-law. If he knew Lewis would hurt Adrienne to this extent, he should have dealt with him long ago. Camilla might be scheming against Adrienne and her mother, but for Lennox, her father was responsible for all of Adrienne’s suffering.

Lennox didn’t think he would be at peace knowing Lewis would be free instead of facing the consequences of his actions. He feared that Lewis would come after Adrienne and hurt her again. Even Hunter was against Adrienne’s decision to free their father, which spoke volumes in Lennox’s opinion. However, neither he nor his brother-in-law could convince Adrienne to change her mind.

Lennox pretended he was okay and spent lunch with his wife and mother-in-law. Looking at Adrienne, he noticed she had lost some weight in the past few weeks and looked tired and drained. He couldn’t bear to see her suffer any longer, and this was why he needed to make sure Lewis wouldn’t be able to hurt her ever again.

When they returned home, Lennox excused himself and stayed at his study all day to finish his work while waiting for Uncle Shark to arrive. Adrienne stayed with her mother for another hour and went out again to pick up Noah and Scarlett from school later.

When Uncle Shark arrived, he locked the door behind him and sat on the couch across Lennox’s desk. He sat there, staring at Lennox with a cold, intense gaze. With Adrienne not around, she had no idea what her husband was up to.

"I thought you’d never agree, but I guess Miss Addie’s decision has forced you to take action." He told Lennox as he lounged back in the plush cushions with his legs crossed.

"Do you think what Adrienne did was right?" Lennox asked in response. Everyone in their family disapproved of her decision, but they knew better and respected her choice.

The older man shrugged, looking bored and disinterested, but Lennox knew better. He knew Uncle Shark was merely biding his time, waiting for the right time to beat up Lewis Jiang. Lennox hesitated to agree with Uncle Shark because his mind was so occupied with Adrienne’s safety that he couldn’t think straight and decide during that time.

"Miss Addie has some odd ideas to deal with her enemies. She would rather break their spirit and make them suffer than simply defeat them," he replied nonchalantly.

Uncle Shark then gave Lennox a pointed look. "But you are different."

"Yes." Lennox didn’t deny Uncle Shark’s words. "I would rather uproot them from the ground and watch them wither away before my eyes than simply defeat them."

Lennox never gave his enemies the chance to retaliate back. Just thinking of Adrienne being hurt by someone was enough to make Lennox lose his mind. He would do anything to protect her, even if it were against her morals or their agreements.

He had tolerated Lewis Jiang and the entire Jiang family for so long because he didn’t want to get in Adrienne’s way. Still, the recent incident was a different matter, in Lennox’s opinion. Lewis not only hurt Adrienne physically, but he forced her to experience pain beyond what he could imagine.

When Adrienne found out that her chances of getting pregnant had significantly decreased because of the attack, Lennox saw that she was distressed and disappointed. He knew how much her inability to conceive a child tormented her in her past life, and he hated that she had to endure the same pain all over again.

Of course, Lennox was saddened by the news. He wanted to have a family with Adrienne, but he would never blame her for something beyond her control. Since he chose to be with her, Lennox knew he would have to accept everything about her.

Adrienne wasn’t even his wife when he dealt with Ares Gu before, and his fate proved that Lennox was willing to do whatever it took to keep her safe. However, now that she is his wife and the mother of their future children, how can he stay still and do nothing when her father hurts her?

Until he was certain that Lewis Jiang wouldn’t pose a threat to Adrienne, Lennox wasn’t willing to let him off the hook. Though he respected his wife’s decision, it didn’t mean he wouldn’t do anything to deal with the problem.

"Do you have a plan in mind? Is there something you want me to do in your stead?" Uncle Shark asked.

Since Lennox had reached him, Uncle Shark thought Lennox had already had enough of Lewis Jiang and was willing to take matters into his own hands for Adrienne’s sake.

Lennox tapped his fingertips against the table, contemplating his next move. He knew he couldn’t just stand by and let it continue. He knew he needed to do something to protect his wife.

"Adrienne would find it suspicious if something bad happened to her father once he got out of prison," Lennox responded. "She might suspect foul play. You know how perceptive my wife could be."

"So would it be ’my way’?" Uncle Shark asked, giving Lennox an amused smile. It seemed that Uncle Shark was suggesting that Lennox should take matters into his own hands.

"Do you have a plan in mind? I don’t want Addie to know about this. I want Lewis Jiang to pay for what he did," Lennox replied, his voice filled with determination.

Uncle Shark hummed and reached for the cigarette pack on his coat but stopped midway as he remembered Noah could not be with someone who smoked. He sighed and put the cigarette pack back in his pocket.

"Don’t worry about it. Lewis Jiang owed so many people a hefty amount of money. They were eager for him to come out of prison and squeeze him dry of the money he owed them."

"And what do you mean to do with it?" Lennox asked.

He was all ears to Uncle Shark’s suggestion. He knew that if he wanted to punish Lewis Jiang discreetly, Uncle Shark could be the perfect person to do the job.

"Most of those people have already given up hope of ever getting their money back," Uncle Shark replied. "But if you are willing to put in the effort and help me fund an underground fight where we can put Lewis Jiang and those people, we can put the plan on the move."

Lennox considered Uncle Shark’s suggestion. He also knew how desperate Lewis Jiang was for money, and there was no doubt he would be willing to participate in an underground fight if a lot of money was at stake. That man wouldn’t have any choice but to get involved with it.

Lennox nodded, feeling satisfied at the thought of luring Lewis into a trap.

"Okay," he said decisively. "Let’s do it. Money isn’t an issue as long as I can see him suffer."

Uncle Shark grinned, revealing a row of slightly yellowed teeth due to his prolonged cigarette usage.

"Excellent. We’ll start gathering the necessary funds and spread the word discreetly. I know you only want to see Lewis Jiang suffer, but if you don’t mind, I want to earn a bit from it. I have connections who can help organize the event without raising suspicions; be careful not to get caught by your in-laws. I’d rather not have Reese Zhao or Hunter coming after me."It’s better to stay safe and avoid any unnecessary trouble.

"Alright. Do what you need to do. Just make sure Addie won’t get a whiff of it." Lennox agreed. Even if others learned about it, they would assume Lewis Jiang got involved because of his massive debts to several people.

He believed Adrienne could torment her father’s mentality, but Lennox wanted to hurt Lewis physically. He thought it was the only way to ensure his wife and their family would be safe. Additionally, he couldn’t let Adrienne bear the pain of her father’s actions. He couldn’t bear to see her suffer from Lewis’ hands any longer.

Lennox planned to keep his wife in the dark about his intentions while Uncle Shark took care of the necessary arrangements. They decided to set up an underground fight where Lewis would participate to win back the money he owed to other people.

Lennox knew that the other participants would be equally desperate for money and willing to do anything to win. He believed that this was the perfect opportunity to get Lewis Jiang into a situation where he would be the one to suffer, but he didn’t want to take any risks that could affect his family.
