Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 452: A Cornered Animal (2)
"Lewis accepted the deal with Marco," Uncle Shark said as soon as he arrived at Lennox’s study. He glanced at the stack of papers on Lennox’s desk and thought he’d never seen so many documents in one place before. Lennox’s workload was worse than Adrienne’s, but Uncle Shark surmised it was because Adrienne was more organized and efficient than her husband.
"He took the bait easily?" Lennox raised his gaze to look at the older man.
Uncle Shark merely shrugged and sat on the couch, sipping his tea. Lennox had been working at home these days, and Adrienne had been away from work to catch up on her deadlines.
"He’s desperate, like a cornered animal." He answered, "He might have gained his freedom, but Lewis Jiang would soon realize that being free is worse than being trapped inside the prison."
"Adrienne is playing mind games with him, but I do not think she fully understands the consequences of her actions." Lennox sighed and removed his reading glasses from his face. "She doesn’t seem to understand that a person with nothing is more dangerous than someone with everything to lose."
"You have to understand that your wife is playing with fire, and it’s only a matter of time before she gets burned, but isn’t this why you are interfering with her plans?" Uncle Shark pointed out. "Lewis Jiang went to see Marco on his own will, not knowing that the inmates he overheard were my people. He had no idea that they purposely mentioned Marco in his presence."
Uncle Shark had some acquaintances behind the prison and was able to bribe some of them to feed the information about Marco to Lewis Jiang. They had planned to make Lewis seek Marco once he got out of prison. This way, they could control Lewis and manipulate him into doing their bidding.
Lennox fell silent as he clasped his hands together, contemplating the implications of Uncle Shark’s words. Everything was going according to their plan. Since he wasn’t related to Uncle Shark, Lennox could continue to gather information without arousing suspicion. He merely funded the underground fight, and he wouldn’t be responsible for any consequences that might arise.
"Did Addie have an idea about it?" He asked. The last thing Lennox wanted was for Adrienne to find out about his involvement in the underground fight.
"I doubt it," Uncle Shark answered. "She’s been busy making branch visits these days, and I don’t think she has any clue about what we’ve been up to."
Adrienne rarely summoned Uncle Shark to run an errand for her. Most of the time, Uncle Shark oversees the security of the Purple Cloud warehouse, where Lennox’s secret lab is located.
Since Adrienne returned to work, she has been completely focused on her responsibilities and hasn’t shown any suspicion or knowledge of his involvement in the underground fight. She had been completely focused on her duties and hadn’t demonstrated any suspicion or knowledge of his participation in the underground fight, which was a relief for Lennox.
It would be better for Adrienne to avoid getting involved with her father. Whatever happens to Lewis later, Adrienne wouldn’t have to bear the burden of knowing his dark secrets. However, Lennox also knew that if the issue came to light, Adrienne would surely be disappointed with him.
But Lennox was no stranger to playing the game of shadows. Even before he met and married Adrienne, Lennox was already accustomed to the treacherous waters within the underground scene. And now, with Uncle Shark by his side, it was more effortless for him to execute his plans discreetly.
He and Adrienne rarely argued and had yet to have a big fight that could strain their relationship. Lennox feared their strong bond would be tested if his secrets were revealed, though he couldn’t find it in himself to regret what he’d done so far. Adrienne was a wonderful wife to him, and he didn’t think any other woman could tolerate and love him as she did.
Lennox took a deep breath, gathering his thoughts. He knew he had to tread carefully, both for the sake of his relationship with Adrienne and for his family. The underground fight, although a means to an end, was a dangerous game that could quickly get out of hand if not approached with caution and strategic planning. He knew that one wrong move could cost him everything.
"I’ll be careful if I were you; Miss Addie isn’t someone you can afford to cross, Mr. Qin." Uncle Shark commented.
Uncle Shark knew this power couple was known for their influence and connections. They were influential in their own right and could destroy anyone who stood in their way. Adrienne was fully aware of this but determined to stand up for what she believed in. Surely, Lennox would have difficulty seeking her forgiveness once she found out what they were doing.
Lennox understood the weight of Uncle Shark’s words, realizing that going against Adrienne could have severe consequences for himself and his loved ones. He had witnessed firsthand the lengths she would go to protect her family, and he couldn’t afford to underestimate her.
"I appreciate your concerns, Uncle Shark," Lennox replied, his voice filled with determination. "But I assure you, I have considered the potential consequences of my actions. This isn’t something I entered into lightly." 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂
Uncle Shark raised an eyebrow, studying Lennox intently. Lennox had been keeping a secret from his wife, and Uncle Shark knew the possibility of Adrienne finding it out was relatively high. For some reason, she had been acting strangely lately, and Uncle Shark couldn’t help but suspect that she had already caught on, but he couldn’t tell Lennox since he didn’t have any evidence. He decided to watch Adrienne until he could gather some proof closely.
"I hope your conviction is strong enough to withstand whatever storms lie ahead," he warned Lennox. "Because once this Pandora’s box is opened, there’ll be no going back."
Lennox nodded solemnly, understanding the gravity of Uncle Shark’s words. There were secrets buried deep within his and Adrienne’s past—secrets that, if unearthed, could destroy their lives and endanger innocent people. He swore to keep her secret until his last breath. However, he hoped that if Adrienne did find out what he’d done to her father, she would see that he had acted out of love and concern.
"I will do everything in my power to protect Addie," Lennox vowed, his voice unwavering. "But I need your help to ensure she remains unaware of my involvement."
Uncle Shark leaned back on the couch and regarded Lennox thoughtfully. After a moment, he nodded in agreement.
"The deal is between you and me, Mr. Qin. If you desire to keep Miss Addie safe, I will continue to assist you discreetly. Miss Addie is too kind for her to allow her father to be free after all the things he’s done to her and her mother. "
Lennox felt gratitude towards Uncle Shark. Despite his intimidating appearance and reputation, Uncle Shark was a trustworthy ally. And now they share a common goal: protecting Adrienne from her abusive father. They cannot allow Lewis to hurt her or her family again.
"I appreciate your support, Uncle Shark," Lennox said sincerely. "Adrienne deserves to live a life free from the shadows of her past. I want to shield her from any harm and ensure her happiness. I’ll bear the consequences of my actions."
"I’ve seen firsthand the lengths Miss Addie would go to protect those she loves. I understand why you’re willing to do whatever it takes for her sake. But remember, Mr. Qin, secrets have a way of unraveling themselves. We must be prepared for any eventuality."
Uncle Shark regarded Lennox with a hint of admiration in his eyes. "You truly do love her, don’t you? It’s a rare thing to witness such devotion in this world."
"I already failed her once, Uncle Shark. If Addie had died back then, I’m not sure what I could have done to live without her. The mere thought of losing her now is unbearable," Lennox confessed, his voice filled with anguish and regret.
He found himself having nightmares lately that kept waking him up in the middle of the night. In those dreams, Lennox saw his wife crying, asking why he didn’t do anything to save her. Sometimes, Lennox dreamt that she was walking away from him, and no matter how hard he called her name and begged for her forgiveness, Adrienne remained out of reach. These nightmares haunted him, reminding him of the consequences of his past inaction.
It almost drove Lennox mad, but he couldn’t tell anyone, not even his wife. Uncle Shark was the only person who had seen the turmoil in his heart. The man saw the despair in his eyes but never judged Lennox for it. Instead, he gave him an enticing offer that Lennox couldn’t turn down. He wanted to destroy Lewis and the other Jiang family members until none of them was capable of harming his wife ever again.
