Reborn Young Miss: Phoenix Burning Red-Chapter 478: Fallen to Death (2)
"Lennox!"
Hunter arrived just in time and saw Alistair falling to his death while Lennox stood unmoving at the edge of the balcony. The night’s cold air sent chills down Hunter’s spine as he looked at his brother-in-law.
Lennox looked over his shoulder, showing his battered and bloodied face, a cold smile playing on his lips. Hunter stood motionless at the door, unsure of what to do next.
When he realized earlier that Lennox had gone missing while he was busy checking Alistair’s study, Hunter cursed his brother-in-law inwardly. He knew Lennox was desperate to save Adrienne and couldn’t help but feel responsible for his safety.
He searched the rest of the house to find Lennox and Adrienne, fearing for their safety. When he met Adrienne in the hallway, seeing her panicked state, Hunter was immediately alarmed.
"Hunter, please!" Adrienne said as she trembled while holding a young infant in his arms. "Please help, Len! He saved me from Alistair. I’m scared of what Alistair could do to him."
It was rare for Hunter to see his usually calm and composed sister in such a state of fear and desperation. He knew how much she loved her husband and would do anything to protect him.
But Hunter knew he needed to secure her safety before he could focus on finding her husband. Adrienne begged him to come after Lennox, but Hunter stood firm in prioritizing her safety.
They went downstairs and met the rest of the police, who finally managed to immobilize Alistair’s men. Hunter even noticed that they apprehended Alistair’s assistant, who could give them valuable information about his operations.
Once he finally secured his sister’s safety, Hunter rushed upstairs to find his missing brother-in-law. He knew how dangerous it could be for Lennox to face Alistair Han alone. He knew he had to act quickly. However, the scene that greeted him was beyond anything he could have imagined.
Given how serious his injuries were, Hunter had no doubt Lennox had a fierce fight with Alistair Han. He had never seen Lennox in such a battered state before. The moonlight illuminated Lennox’s face, allowing Hunter to give him a good look.
One of Lennox’s eyes was swollen and shut tight, his lip was split open, and his face was covered in bruises and cuts. Lennox’s clothes were torn and bloodstained. As Hunter stated at Lennox’s battered form, he felt a cold in his spine. He saw a side of Lennox that he had never imagined possible.
"Lennox," Hunter whispered, his voice shaking as he approached his brother-in-law. "What happened?"
Lennox didn’t answer at first. His eyes flickered open, revealing a wild and haunted look. It seemed as if he didn’t recognize his brother-in-law standing before him. But then, slowly, a weak smile spread across his battered face.
"She’s safe, Hunter. I managed to get her out of there," Lennox rasped, his voice barely audible. "As for Alistair..."
Before he could finish his words, Lennox collapsed and fell to his knees. Hunter rushed to his side and gently helped him sit down.
"Listen to me, Lennox. You’ve done enough." Hunter said before getting back to his feet to look down at the pavement where Alistair’s lifeless body lay. He was conflicted about what to do about Lennox.
"Hunter, I’m not sorry for what I’ve done. " Lennox said in a hushed tone.
Hunter stared at his brother-in-law for a long moment before turning his gaze away.
"You did what you thought could save Addie. I understand that, but..." He paused for a moment and shook his head. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
"She’s safe now. That’s all that matters to me, Hunter. I don’t expect anyone to believe me if I say it was an accident. Alistair knew one of us should die tonight, and I’m not willing to hand over Addie to him at all costs. He’d hurt her enough."
Lennox closed his eyes, feeling exhausted and relieved. He knew that Alistair’s death meant that Adrienne could finally find peace from her past and move forward with a new, brighter future.
Hunter said nothing and chose to help Lennox get back on his feet. Neither of them spoke a word as they descended the stairs. They both knew that if Adrienne found out what Lennox did, she would never look at him the same after that day.
When they reached and joined the rest of the team, Adrienne stood up; the blanket draped over her shoulder fell as she ran towards her husband. The first thing Adrienne did when she saw Lennox was throw herself into his arms, sobbing uncontrollably. Lennox was beaten badly, and she hated that she was the reason for his injuries.
Hunter watched the scene unfold, feeling a mix of relief and guilt. He knew that Lennox had done what he thought was necessary to protect Adrienne, but the means he used were questionable. Hunter didn’t know if he could ever condone Lennox’s actions, but he was grateful that Adrienne was safe.
The rest of the evening was spent debriefing with the police and ensuring Alistair’s men had been properly dealt with. Hunter couldn’t help but wonder what would happen next. Would Lennox be able to live with what he had done? Would Adrienne ever forgive him? Perhaps only time will tell.
Hunter went to the small crowd that surrounded Alistair’s dead body. This was the man who tortured and hurt Adrienne in their past lives. Seeing him dead gave Hunter a sense of closure. He knew that Adrienne’s past would never truly be behind her, but with Alistair’s death, at least they had one less thing to fear.
When Adrienne disclosed to him all the illegal activities in which Alistair was involved, Hunter knew by then that she had been reborn and given a second chance in life. The information she shared with him was too detailed and could only have been possible if she’d been close with Alistair for a long time.
For this reason, Hunter decides not to question her further and instead chooses to trust her completely. He also feared that asking her about the life she had in the past might open a can of worms that he wasn’t ready to deal with.
As the night wore on, Hunter could feel the weight of the events that had transpired starting to settle in. He knew their family would never be the same after what happened, but he hoped they could all eventually find some sort of peace.
Adrienne, meanwhile, was still clinging to Lennox, her tears soaking his battered and bloodied clothes. Hunter watched as they both tried to come to terms with what had happened. Lennox, despite his injuries, seemed to be holding it together. Hunter couldn’t see any regret or remorse on Lennox’s face, only relief. Relief that there would be no Alistair Han who would dare to hurt Adrienne again.
