Regression - Second Chance At Life-Chapter 295: You Will Not
Adam still cannot believe the words coming out of Renee’s mouth.
She wants him to participate in illegal street racing so that he can help her catch the master mind behind it all.
How can it get any more absurd than this? After all, in the public’s eyes, he is just a teenager who just turned eighteen a few months ago.
For Renee to come here and ask him to participate in such a dangerous thing, risking his life for a police woman he barely knows, she can only be considered crazy.
"What if I refuse?" Adam asks. After all, it’s a valid question. He has no idea what he is getting involved in. Since this is an illegal activity that clearly has some kind of organization, it is bound to be dangerous, given all the money involved.
Entering it is entering a hungry lion’s den. Once again proving how stupid an idea it is to get Adam involved.
"You can’t. If you do, I will arrest you and make sure you get the maximum punishment possible," Renee says.
Hearing her, Adam leans back. The smile on his face fades, and his expression becomes neutral.
Renee’s not threatening him, and he doesn’t like that.
"Did you forget, I have Clara Dean as my personal lawyer. I am not scared of fighting your allegation in a court, plus I myself am rich, and my father is a multi-millionaire. I am not scared of your little threats," Adam replies.
Hearing Adam’s words, Renee smiles, as if already anticipating what Adam’s going to say. Adam notices her confident smile and realizes that she has already seen through this conversation in her head.
"You are right, with Clara by your side, and with your father’s influence and money, you won’t really suffer much. The least the law will ask you to do is some community service and charitable donation," Renee says, taking a defeated sigh and leaning back again.
Adam raises his brows as he begins to wonder what this crazy woman’s thought process is. She knew that she wouldn’t be able to blackmail Adam into doing anything, but she still tried.
’Is she trying to get a read on my character?’ Adam wonders. He begins to realize that her probing has still not ended; in fact, it might never.
’She’s shifty, I need to be careful around this one,’ Adam thinks.
"So you already know that you won’t get anywhere with your threats, so why even try?" Adam asks.
"I just wanted to give it a try, see if it can work," Renee says, smiling at him again.
Adam doesn’t say anything for a few seconds. He just stares at her with multiple thoughts running in his head.
"What else do you have?" Adam asks as he realizes that Renee might have something more that made her think he is going to help her with this stunt of hers.
Hearing his question, Renee’s smile widens.
"Well, I have been doing some digging on your. And I have found that you are quite greedy for money, and you like to fool around with multiple women, whether they are committed or not," Renee says.
Adam tenses up a little but doesn’t show it on his face. After all, the woman is clearly digging into him a lot deeper than necessary. Why is she trying to find out what Adam does in his personal life?
"Isn’t that like every other guy. Every guy wants money and women; I am no different. So why me?" Adam asks.
"True, every guy wants money and women, but you are different because of your success rate..." Renee says, smiling.
"See... I have been looking into everything you have been doing in the past month. I learned that you are quite a charmer; every woman you have shown interest in is somehow deeply infatuated by you. A hundred percent success rate with every woman you have interacted with? That’s unheard of.
And there are also your little business ventures. The crypto coin investment. You managed to make a fortune out of the little money you had in your hand. You managed to pull out at the right time before the rug was pulled from people’s legs. From what I know, you have no connection with the people involved in the rug pull, so you aren’t involved with insider trading. It could be a coincidence that you managed to pull out on time, or you knew something others didn’t.
You also seem to have bought a new start-up with that money you earned, an online escort business. A little brash for my taste, but since it’s sex, I am sure it’s going to be successful.
You also bought into half of a restaurant’s ownership where you work, and the restaurant’seems to be promising enough for it to succeed.
You clearly have an eye for money.
Then there are also your other activities. I learned that you just started your little MMA hobby a few weeks ago, but you are already better than most people. I heard you want to go pro.
You are also trying to get yourself familiar with gun combat. Trying to get yourself familiar with every means to defend yourself, and from what I got, you were excellent in it, as well." Renee says.
Adam scrunches his brows as he realizes that Renee’s been digging into everything he’s been doing with his life, that too on an obsessive level.
In fact, Adam is impressed that Renee managed to get all of this within a few days.
"It’s like you are training to be a super soldier. This is the reason why I am choosing you: you are special. Anyone can see what you have been doing and come to this conclusion. Everything you do, you do better than most. What I see is an investment.
I am investing in you. I believe that you can help me find the guy I am looking for." Renee says.
Adam takes it all in. Renee has done her background check thoroughly, but still, Adam doesn’t see how it’s going to benefit him by working with her.
"Thanks for all the praise, but what if I still want to refuse?" Adam asks.
"You won’t," Renee says, surprising Adam. Why wouldn’t he refuse? Does she have something that she can offer him?
"Why won’t I?" Adam asks.
"As I said, you have a good eye for money, and you are greedy," Renee says.
"So you are offering me money?" Adam asks; his interest piques. But he doesn’t believe the government would actually pay him the amount of money needed to get his interest.
"I am not going to give you any money, nor will my police department, but yes, you will get a shit load of money," Renee says.
"How so?" Adam asks.
"By winning the races," Renee says.
Adam raises his brows, waiting for more information.
"You see, the people who organize these races are starting a new season. Yes, it sounds funny that illegal racing has seasonal runs, but that’s how it is. These people make a lot of money organizing these races every year. But instead of broadcasting, the money is earned by gambling. Billions of dollars of money flow into these races every year.
And the racers themselves get a nice cut from the money earned. The more races one wins, the more money you win..." She pauses, and her smile grows; she clearly has something more to say.
"And if you win all the races, including the grand finale. You will have 375 million dollars in your hand," Renee says.
Her last words hit Adam like a brick.
His eyes widened at the amount of money that’s out for grabs.
"Three hundred and seventy five million...." He repeats.
"Of course, only if you can win almost all races to get yourself in the final race. How much you earn depends on your skill," Renee says.
Adam takes his time collecting his thoughts. At first, he really wasn’t interested in this little plan that Renee was cooking up, but now things are different, 375 million dollars. That’s fucking huge. Adam’s more than tempted.
He looks at Renee again.
"That’s a lot of money, and earned through illegal means. What if I get in trouble with you folks after I win it?" Adam asks.
Renee chuckles, not because of Adam’s question, but because Adam’s already claiming that he is going to win.
"You don’t have to worry about that. They don’t pay in cash; they pay in bonds. So whoever owns those bonds owns all the money. As I said, the organizers of these races have deep ties; they know how to move money without attracting unwanted attention," Renee says.
"I have so many questions," Adam says.
"Take your time, ask them. I have all day to answer," Renee says.
"Why not hire a real professional, someone who will be willing work with you," Adam asks.
"Can’t, the one racing for us shouldn’t have any connection leading back to us. Getting someone with a known name will attract unwanted attention. Putting someone with a new face and no connection to us will be the best course of action. What’s a better cover than a young, rich kid who wants to drive around in fast cars, participating in illegal racing?" Renee says, smiling.
Adam begins to wonder in silence again, and Renee lets him take all the time he needs.
"You said that the organizers have deep ties; that means they must have people in the police workforce as well. How many people know of this plan?" Adam asks.
If he is going to get involved, he needs to know who he can trust.
Renee smiles, seeing Adam get serious. She can already see that he will agree to help them any second now.
"At this moment, only four people. You. Me. My Captain, and the Chief of Police himself. No one else. As I said, the organizers have deep ties. We don’t know who we can trust, and that’s why I came alone to talk to you," Renee says.
Adam takes the answer in and ponders it again.
