Chapter 53: A Plan

Chapter 53

As Kuran brought the old and rusty weapons to the floor, the other three stared at each other briefly with certain expressions on their faces and then glanced at the weapons that lay on the floor before them.

None of them had expected the Kitsuboma Clan heir to miraculously bring out a dozen mundane weapons from an old wooden box, nor did it make sense that one would find that many weapons in a desolate ruin like the one they found themselves in.

But here they were, looking at what—given their current situation—could only be considered a miracle, and despite that, however, they still had a problem.

Megumi glanced at Kuran and then cleared his throat.

"Are all of us here proficient with weapons?"

Kuran furrowed his brows and instantly turned his gaze to him; Hime freed her knees a bit, lingering for a moment while Silver quickly spoke up.

"I know the katas of the dao sword... actually, I used to practice with my elder brother before the beginning of the demon hunt."

Megumi narrowed his eyes for a moment and then glanced at the pile of weapons on the floor once again.

’There isn’t a single dao sword here.’

He heaved a sigh.

"Well, Master Xi, would you be able to manage something else? A similar weapon, perhaps?"

Silver looked up at him for a moment and then nodded his head. There was a brief silence between them before Hime finally decided to speak.

Her lips trembled as she stuttered.

"I... I don’t know how to use a weapon."

Megumi simply shrugged his shoulders, not paying her words much attention. He already knew she wasn’t a weapon-type fighter after fighting side by side with her a day ago. But she made up for that disparity with her ability... which was probably the most useful among what the other three had to offer.

Seeing that none of them had anything to say, Hime turned her head down and gazed emptily at the floor while Megumi quickly knelt down near the pile of ancient, mundane weapons.

Fumbling through the pile, he finally caught sight of a weapon that managed to draw his attention. It was a tachi covered in dust, which he picked up and quickly took with him to the window.

He flourished the window and got off the dust as much as he could, revealing a well-polished blade and a round, wooden grip. It was fairly similar to the sword he was used to, so it was going to be manageable.

He retreated slightly from the window and performed a few swings with the sword, and then he flourished the blade one last time and brought it close to his waist, heading back to the other three.

Kuran had gone for a simple companion sword, while Silver picked up a jian. They each simply went for weapons they could salvage, and Hime didn’t bother to pick up any weapons.

After they were done picking up whatever weapons suited them best, Kuran pushed the remaining mundane weapons aside, and then they sat around each other on the floor, preparing to discuss a plan for how they could proceed forward.

With no knowledge of where they were or what dangers were lurking in wait for them, going anywhere without a plan—even if it was not solid—would be a guaranteed failure of the test.

All four of them provided the information they had, having come from different directions, and Megumi went into detail about the coast that lay to the south and the horrible stench that seemed to be coming from around it.

Fortunately for Hime and Silver, they had arrived near each other to the east and had headed to the ruins after coming into contact, where they both met Kuran, who, not so strangely, had found himself right next to the grey tower.

With the information they managed to provide, it appeared that there was nothing to the south—at least nothing like their comrades—and Hime and Silver had not gone far enough to the east for them to draw a clear conclusion.

However, they had a problem, and it lay in the rules of the test; they had to rid the place of demons completely if they intended to pass the test, and even if Megumi hadn’t spotted any of their comrades to the south, it didn’t mean they had to go there.

After a while of them talking, Kuran got up, performed a few stretches, and said:

"Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s go find the others."

They all nodded their heads and quickly got up from the floor as well, their gazes fixed on the single window in the small chamber. They intended to take a shorter route out.

Jumping down from fifty meters high hadn’t posed a concern for any of them, not that it hadn’t prompted some reluctance... Looking down from the window as he took his leg up the frame, Megumi just knew that it wasn’t something he would be doing regularly.

After they all descended from the tower, they headed toward the sealed wall, which Silver quickly brought down, leaving a clear path for all of them to go through. They already had a clear goal, and all that was left to do was cross the wall and head south.

No big deal.

But rather, they all simply stood still, gazing at the distance with a disgusted and twisted look on their faces. Quickly, Megumi raised a hand and pinched his nose before things could get worse.

Silver blurted out.

"What is that? It smells horrible."

Megumi, meanwhile, took a tentative step forward, his eyes slightly widening.

’I recognize that scent.’

He then quickly turned to Kuran.

"It’s the same horrible stench I told you about, but... I think it’s gotten worse."

Hime shivered and tensed up, looking to the south; Megumi and Kuran both did well to remain calm while Silver stepped back, visible fright on his face.

Kuran stepped forward, grabbing hold of the companion blade he had carefully fitted to the side of his waist, while Megumi gripped his polished tachi, now forced to endure the torture of the horrible stench on a much grander scale.

"Have your shadows detected anything?"

Kuran narrowed his eyes and inclined his head, signifying that he had not seen anything.

But he didn’t need to...

Because as they stood, waiting for the shadow inheritor’s signal, a short, raspy noise began to ensue around them. It sounded like the gentle rattling of tiny pebbles.

*Skitter* *Skitter* *Skitter*

A bit disoriented, they swiftly glanced all around them, but they weren’t able to see anything; yet the raspy noise continued. It quickly began to get louder, yet nothing appeared in their field of vision.

And then the ground tumbled...

Gasping in shock, Megumi quickly ran forward, grabbing hold of Hime’s hand with a distressful look on his face, and at the top of his voice, he yelled:

"Both of you, jump now!"

... Whatever they were looking for had come to meet them instead.
