— 1 Day Later —

Last night I decided to purchase Omen Pulse and Corrupted Growth. While Corrupted Growth never specified I would be in control of the dark beings attracted to the land, I believed it was useful when invading another Gatekeeper’s territory. Using such an ability to throw their territory into chaos and weaken their forces would be beneficial for me.

After Lee Bai’s attack on Louisiana, I could no longer see the battle between Gatekeepers as a fight between individuals. It is clear this is a war between realms, armies, and worlds.

With the 10,000 experience points I accumulated from that battle, I could level up twice, so I pushed all my free stat points to Vitality.

The plan was to push it up to 25 points before doing the same to my Intel stat. My priority at this moment is to wield Vanguard’s Curse as soon as possible. Only then can I face a horde of dark beings alone.

With that, I was left with 5,450 EXP, and I needed 6,400 to level up again. I decided to use 5,000 EXP to purchase a map of this dying world, since it would serve a great purpose in my plan to reclaim every piece of land stolen by the dark entities before shutting down the dark rift linking this world to the Dead World.

Seated in my study room, I scanned through it with knitted eyebrows, watching the vast land consumed by darkness and evil. As I initially suspected, what they refer to as the Empire of Velenhorst was nothing more than the capital city.

The rest of the empire had been conquered, and its inhabitants pushed back this far.

These people were not thriving—they were surviving. That explains why they were so happy and cheerful when I saved them from the Mourning Wretch and the Cradling Maw.

Drip!

Blood fell on the map and for a moment I was taken aback. I wiped my nose with the back of my hand and looked at the stain on it.

My blood was not just red. It had a shade of black that looked unnatural.

"What the hell is going on?" I abruptly stood up, but more blood dripped from my nose, staining my black shirt.

I covered my nose with my palm and glanced around the table only to realize I never brought a handkerchief with me from Earth.

[The Gatekeeper role is not a gift where you enjoy boundless powers without consequences...]

This time, not only could I see the messages—I could hear a sharp, cold voice in my head.

[The powers you accumulate to protect your territory, and the territories you will acquire to gain more power, will take a toll on your mortal body!]

[You will suffer. You will live in pain for eternity. You will wish for death—but it will not come. The only way you are allowed to die will be at the hands of another Gatekeeper.]

"BASTARD!" I growled, but quickly felt a warm liquid running up my throat while my vision blurred.

Bam!

Falling to my knees, I coughed up a mouthful of blood as stabbing pain infiltrated my heart, forcing me to clutch it tightly and grit my teeth.

The bastard system never informed me of these side effects. If I had known, I would have been more selective about the abilities I purchased—and kept it to the barest minimum.

[Don’t blame me for your misfortune...]

The voice returned.

[To survive against your competitors, you will still have to acquire as much power and as many territories as possible... This fate is unavoidable.]

I listened to the voice and glared at the messages popping up. Only one question ran through my mind:

What the hell is this system?

It sounds and acts desperate when in danger. Tries to act harmless and mechanical on normal days. And now—it was vicious and cruel.

This thing was definitely not just a machine created to guide me through this world.

This thing was a living entity monitoring my actions.

Huff!

Inhaling was hell. My throat and nose hurt badly, but my eyes never left my stats. I had accumulated so much power in a short time—something others could only dream of.

With the benefits of owning a territory, I could grow a thousand times faster than any Limitless could.

"I am the fool to think all these advantages would come without a price," I chuckled with a bitter smile.

"The heavens giveth, and the heavens taketh."

A cruel smile bloomed on my lips, revealing my stained teeth.

"If you think this means you’ve won—think again!" I snarled.

As long as I draw breath, there’s still a chance I’ll find a way to break free from the system’s control.

And when that happens, I will turn my blade to the heavens—and make them pay for their crimes.

Ding!

[The People of Velenhorst are approaching your castle!]

The system had returned to normal, spitting out notifications like it hadn’t talked down to me moments ago.

I could only chuckle at this and put everything that happened at the back of my mind. Since I couldn’t do anything about it now, I just shoved my resentment deep down.

I’ll keep it sharp and hidden—until I’m ready to strike.
