Rejected By My Mate, Now Mated To The Lycan King-Chapter 138
~ ROWAN
I watched Nyssa and Aria through the window in my office.
Leaving Nyssa in the dining room without a word was fucking difficult, but it was clear that she needed space from me. She would not even glance my way.
I watched her carefully, noting how she smiled as she wrapped her arms around Eric.
Seeing her hold another man with such excitement was not an easy thing, but I’d unfortunately come to accept that Eric was a part of her life. She cared for him, and he did her as well. No one guard was as invested in finding her as he was when she went missing.
A knock on the door snapped me out of my thoughts and I turned to find Jeremiah standing in the middle of my office. He bowed low, his hands folded behind his back.
"Is everything alright?" I asked and he nodded.
"You told me to come to you if I had any information regarding the pack. Our sources say that they are holding a competition to find their next Alpha."
I hummed.
It was expected. A pack could not function without an Alpha. Henry was dead and he didn’t have any heirs. Typically, the role would have gone to his Beta, but there was no fucking way Nyssa was ruling that pack.
"Let me know the moment an Alpha is chosen."
He bowed. "Of course, Your Majesty."
When he did not move, I knew there was something more that he was not saying.
I crossed my arms over my chest, assessing him carefully. "What is it?"
"Sir, a letter came today—"
He did not get the chance to finish what he was saying because another guard walked in, bowing low. "Your Majesty, the border sentinel is here."
"I’ll be right there," I said to him before turning my attention to Jeremiah. "Leave the letter on my table, I will get to it when I can."
He pursed his lips, clearly not pleased with that decision. A part of me wondered if there was more to the letter than he was saying, but I could not wait. I had to see the sentinel in charge of the borders to make new changes for pack security.
That was paramount; a letter was not.
The meeting ran long.
We spent hours going over some changes and by the time we were done, I felt a bit of relief at knowing that the chances of someone sneaking my mate out from my borders would be practically impossible/
Speaking of Nyssa. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
I took out my phone and dialed Aria’s number. It rang three times before it connected.
"I only have five minutes before I need to run into another meeting," she said as soon as she picked up. "What’s up? Is everything okay?"
"Everything is fine," I said simply.
"Then why—oh, Rowan, this is gold. Did you call to ask about Nyssa?"
I did not bother denying it. "Yes, is she okay?"
Aria laughed maniacally, the sound echoing through the speakers. "Why couldn’t you just call her yourself?"
"I don’t want to bother her."
"You are actually insane," she murmured. I could picture the smile on her face as she spoke. "Nyssa is fine. She’s doing well. She has thrown herself into the work. I think she’s a bit more stressed than she’s letting on, but so far, she seems okay."
A sense of relief rushed through me at that. "Has she eaten?"
Aria hesitated for a moment. "I’m not sure. I’ve been in meetings all morning and she has been in her office going over some documents. If she hasn’t, we can just go to a restaurant or something—"
"Don’t worry, I’ll handle it."
I didn’t give her the chance to respond before hanging up. The least I could do for my mate was get her fucking lunch.
It was pathetic that I hadn’t done it sooner.
How the fuck was she supposed to give me a chance when I wasn’t even treating her like my mate?
I’d treated her like an inconvenience then jumped straight into fucking her. The sex was fucking phenomenal, but she deserved more.
After placing the order for the food, I dialed up another number. One I hadn’t called in a very long time.
"Your Majesty!" a male voice answered as soon as the call connected. "This is such an honor. What can I do for you?"
"I need a reservation for tonight. Is that something you can do?"
He was silent for a moment. "I know you like your privacy. I can close the restaurant for tonight—"
"I don’t want it at the restaurant. I want the other place."
"Oh!" there was no missing the surprise in his tone. "Of course, I will get that done right away."
"Thank you."
I hung up without another word, unable to stop the smile that tugged at my lips.
A night out was exactly what Nyssa and I needed. We’d be able to talk about everything together and hopefully, I’d be able to get a read on where her head’s at.
I headed back to my office, shutting the door quietly behind me.
A mountain of pack work waited for me, but it didn’t seem so daunting. I had something to look forward to later and there was no better way to pass the time.
I reached for the document I was last going through when a small envelope atop my stationaries caught my eye. It must have been the one that Jeremiah told me about earlier.
I reached for it, frowning when I realized that it was unmarked. There was nothing written on it save for my name in elegant cursive atop the beige colored paper and a wax seal of a howling lycan.
I ripped it open, trying to get a sense of where it came from but still, there was nothing.
However, when I read the first line... I knew.
My blood ran cold as I read the entire letter, over and over to be sure I had gotten the gist of it all.
I immediately mind linked Jeremiah. "Where did this come from?"
"Did you read the letter?" he asked.
"Yes."
"It came in the mail with the other letters."
"My office, Jeremiah. Now!"
