Chapter 140: Valerie’s disappointment in Hannah

At 9.00 PM, Carson City

Valerie curled up on the floor mattress wearing a maroon sweater, even covering herself with a brownish-white blanket. She shivered, her eyes weary, while her nose started to run, sneezing frequently.

"Darling," Damian called with a worried look. "Are you okay? Do you want me to call a doctor to check on you?"

"No, it’s not necessary. I just have the flu," Valerie murmured.

"Having the flu is still bad; I’ll call the doctor."

"It’s Okay... don’t always overreact..." Valerie sat up, then smoothed her slightly tousled hair while looking at Damian. "I’ll call Mom... I’ll ask her to look after Daniel while we’re here."

Damian remained silent with a frustrated expression, letting Valerie make the call. He lay there, his gaze directed at his stomach, feeling the urge to unwrap the bandages and check if it had healed as if he couldn’t stand being in the hospital continuously.

"Is he asleep?" Valerie asked, now connected with her mother.

"Yes, Fanny’s with him, and he’s asleep now, but I’ll join him," Danna replied casually. "How’s your husband? Is he getting better?"

"Yes..." Valerie rubbed her stuffy nose. "Actually, I’m the one down with the flu."

"Oh?"

"Yeah... But don’t worry, I have flu medicine."

"No!" Danna sounded panicked. "Don’t take the flu medicine you have before you’re pregnant. It’s not suitable for you... you should know, that pregnant women should only take medicine prescribed by a doctor."

"Oh..."

"Go see your obstetrician now, Okay... Get flu medication, if necessary, and ask for an examination," Danna exclaimed, sounding bossy. "I’ll go to Daniel’s room now."

"Okay..."

Valerie sighed, looking at Damian, who was still sulking.

"What happened?" Damian asked.

"I’m going to see the obstetrician," Valerie replied, getting up from the bed and stepping onto the floor. "It’s so cold..." She quickly put on her slippers.

Damian sighed heavily, growing more frustrated at not being able to help Valerie.

"If only I weren’t like this, I would take you to see the obstetrician," he said sadly.

"It’s Okay, besides, the obstetrician’s office isn’t far from here," Valerie replied, approaching Damian, and then bending down to kiss his lips. "I’ll be back soon... Don’t worry," she continued, gently stroking Damian’s cheek.

Damian remained silent with a sad look, letting Valerie go. He leaned back against the pillow, then picked up his phone from beside his thigh.

Before he could use his phone, his attention was caught by Valerie re-entering, followed by Hans and Hannah.

"I failed to see the obstetrician," Valerie said, approaching Damian, then turning to Hans and Hannah, who immediately lowered their heads as if afraid of her. "I want to talk to her first," she continued.

Damian fell silent, looking at Hannah, who kept bowing her head. Slowly, he clenched his fists, trying to contain his anger, remembering what had happened to him because of Samuel’s actions.

"Sir, you can’t punish her," Hans said with a worried look. "She explained everything to me, and..."

"I didn’t ask you to speak, Hans... I want her to explain everything!" Damian interrupted before Hans finished speaking.

Hans immediately fell silent with concern, glancing at Hannah, who continued to bow her head.

"Hannah, I don’t want to talk much... I just want to know your motive... I don’t want to get angry before hearing an explanation from you," Valerie said disappointedly, then sat down beside Damian.

"Speak up, don’t just show your dumb face!" Damian retorted bluntly.

Valerie immediately grasped Damian’s hand, trying to hold him back from his emotions.

Hannah sighed, then gathered her courage to look at them.

"Firstly, I apologize for betraying your trust," she said timidly. "It was my fault and my foolishness... I’ve liked Samuel for a long time since I started taking care of Daniel. Then eventually, I saw him liking Valerie... it made me feel hopeless, but I still liked him very much because he seemed so kind. But after I found out that Valerie rejected him, we slowly became close because I became his spy, but I never gave him information about Valerie because I didn’t want him to know about Valerie... and at that time, I leaned more towards Damian because I thought Valerie was better off with Damian than with Samuel because I thought I should get Samuel."

Valerie fell silent and furrowed her brow, then glanced at Damian, recalling every time she tried to avoid Damian but suddenly he reappeared, especially when they moved houses and were about to leave for Korea.

’So all of this because Hannah told him?’

"When you were in Korea with Damian, I went to Samuel. I told him that Valerie intentionally moved houses and was going to Korea with Damian for fun, so at that time Samuel was very upset and chose to be with me," Hannah continued, making Valerie shake her head instantly. "It was an obsession that made me like this... I was too obsessed to get him, so that night he said he wouldn’t want Valerie anymore and would try to love me... That’s when our relationship started. We often spent time together without Valerie’s knowledge, but I told Damian once," she continued.

"Yeah, and I thought you were stupid," Damian replied with a sarcastic look.

"I am stupid and was shocked when I found out that he is the reason you two broke up by telling Clara to trap you... And I grew more hateful and disgusted with him when he kidnapped Daniel and Valerie and then hurt you. After that, I ended our relationship and wanted to focus on my work," explained Hannah, then bowed her head again. "But it turns out I got pregnant when accompanying you on your honeymoon."

"Oh my God..." Valerie was so shocked that her mouth hung open, then immediately covered it with both hands, looking at Hannah, who was pregnant just like her.

"I was very embarrassed to admit it to you because the father of this baby is Samuel’s child. That’s why I decided to quit my job... And the money you gave me made me think that I should free Samuel because I would need him... Because I didn’t dare to go back to my family," Hannah explained with all the shame in her heart that she dared not look at them anymore. "I thought he would change, especially since I agreed... In the end, he could be free and we got married even though I still doubted it, and I didn’t love him too much. He was so kind, even starting to work... Treating me like a typical husband would... I never expected that he still harbored resentment towards you... I thought the agreement we made would make him afraid, but it didn’t," she continued, then sighed heavily.

Damian fell silent with concern, seeing Hannah, who indeed seemed to regret her actions, and even admitted to her efforts to bring him and Valerie closer, making him pity her and also be grateful to her.

"Honestly, this is very surprising to me," Valerie said disappointedly. "It turns out your wrongdoing isn’t just about releasing Samuel... but also spying on me and then telling Damian about it... I know it didn’t cost me much since I ended up marrying Damian... We’re happy like this now... But what you did shows that you can’t be trusted... How could you do that to me?" She asked sadly.

"I’m sorry," Hannah whispered.

"You don’t need to blame her for that because it’s my fault," Damian said, glancing at Valerie and holding her hand. "Why should you make an issue out of it if ultimately what she did led us to happiness? If she hadn’t told me about you moving houses and your plans to go to Korea... I might not have been able to woo you back... And it’s all because I instructed her to always give me information about you... It’s not her fault."

"Now you’re defending her?"

"I’m not defending her, I just want to be fair."

"I think that issue doesn’t need to be discussed anymore, and her freeing Samuel shouldn’t be questioned either because at that time she really had no choice and now she regrets it too," Hans said.

"I’m ready to face punishment," Hannah murmured. "Because of me, Samuel can pay someone to hurt you. So, you have the right to punish me."

"Do you think my husband is evil enough to punish a pregnant woman?" Valerie asked angrily.

Hannah just remained silent, still bowing her head.

"Now one thing you need to consider... Never trust Samuel again... You already know he’s a dangerous man, you shouldn’t release him even if you need him as the father of your child... You should learn from my experience... Look, I went through pregnancy without Damian by my side, even gave birth with difficulty... I could go through all that without him... And I know you can too... If you had told me from the beginning, I would have gladly helped you... I don’t care if it’s Samuel’s child or not, I would still help you because the child is innocent!" Valerie said angrily as if letting out all her anger. "Your unwillingness to open up to me about what happened disappoints me... You seem to not consider me your friend... You doubt my goodness... I don’t know... I don’t know what to do now... I’m already disappointed, my husband is severely hurt because of you... I can’t make a decision!" she continued angrily, then quickly got off the bed and left the room.

"Darling!" Damian exclaimed.

Valerie continued walking without listening to Damian’s shouts.

"Hans, follow her!" Damian called out.

Hans immediately followed Valerie while Hannah remained in the room, still bowing, as if afraid Damian would lash out at her.
