Chapter 40: He against his father

Damian come, I don’t know what he talked about, but one thing’s for sure, he didn’t come to see Daniel.

He even kissed Valerie, and Valerie didn’t reject it.

I think they agreed to get back together. Don’t mention that I told you about this.

Hannah smiled happily after successfully sending that message to Samuel. She hugged her phone to her chest, then saw Valerie entering the room.

"Hannah?" Valerie saw Hannah smiling and sitting on the bed. "What happened? Why are you smiling like that? Did you receive a romantic message from your boyfriend, or..." She wondered while sitting back in her chair, facing the laptop.

Hannah grinned. "Umm... I didn’t get a message from him, but I sent it. It’s something he likes," she said.

Valerie smiled thinly. "I hope you’ll tell me who that guy is."

"I can’t... I can’t be open about my love life with you."

"Uhmm..." Valerie observed her writing. "Then you may leave this room now. Maybe you should call him."

"Okay..." Hannah quickly stood up.

Valerie remained silent, letting Hannah leave the room. She looked at her writings on the laptop, her hands ready on the keyboard, but her thoughts kept focusing on Damian.

"He came for me, regrets the lies I’ve told, and regrets his decisions. But what decision is that? Did he ever want to stop chasing me? But now I’m not with Samuel anymore, that means he can pursue me again... But why did he say he regrets because he’s already taken a decision? Does that mean he has made an irreversible decision?" She wondered, furrowing her brows, unable to hide the anxiety on her face.

"Hmm..." She sighed. "I shouldn’t be thinking about this... Besides, I’m not ready if he pursues me again. I think it’ll be difficult to be with him... His father hates me." She leaned back on the chair, then took a small headset and put it on her ears.

Perhaps she would listen to music to relax and find inspiration for writing.

...

After driving for a few minutes, Damian finally arrived at his parents’ mansion. He got out of the car, walked towards the front door, passed through various rooms until he reached the office where his father was checking documents with a trusted person.

"We need to talk," Damian said.

Darius glanced at Damian briefly and then at the man in front of him.

"Ronald, we can discuss this matter tomorrow. I need to talk to my son," he said.

"Okay, Mr. McCourtney," Ronald replied, then stood up. "I’m leaving."

Darius nodded, letting Ronald leave, then looked at Damian still standing across from him.

"What do you want to say?" he asked.

"I’ve changed my mind," Damian replied. "I’m going back to Valerie..."

"Are you joking?"

"No, I’m not joking... I’ll prove that she won’t leave me again... We have strong reasons to be back together... And please don’t pull all my assets... I need them for our future, especially for Daniel," Damian explained, furrowing his brows, showing seriousness on his face.

Darius fell silent.

"I’ll prove that she won’t embarrass me or our family again. Please... Just... just give me time," Damian pleaded with a gaze. "If I can’t get her back in a month, you can do whatever you want to me. But starting tonight, let me try to win her back..."

"And what about Karina? Have you thought about the consequences if you cancel your engagement with her?" Darius wondered. "Do you forget that yesterday I warned you to think carefully about deciding to have a relationship with her or not, but you were sure you chose her over Valerie. You can’t change that decision just like that; it would be an insult to her..."

"I know I was wrong, but I really can’t stick to that decision!" Damian interrupted before Darius finished speaking.

"You can’t do that... You’ll make her father angry and ruin our business. You know her father has a lot of shares in companies collaborating with us; those are significant shares, he has power... He could even use that to make them stop working with us. Do you want to impoverish our family just..."

"You’re talking too far; we won’t experience that!" Damian exclaimed firmly. "We have assets; we’ll still thrive even without their shares!"

"Oh, you want to be arrogant, not needing cooperation from others?"

"We need it, but we’ll only accept those not under Mr. Adam’s control! We’ll be oppressed, we won’t have freedom!" Damian affirmed. "We have to be independent... We don’t always have to follow his wishes, even if it means sacrificing me... I don’t want to!"

Darius fell silent, looking stern as if disliking Damian’s decision.

"Valerie won’t marry Samuel... She lied because she thought she couldn’t be with me... And she’s afraid of you," Damian added.

"She’s a liar, she’s childish. How can I not hate her?" Darius asked, clenching his jaw. "I can’t sacrifice the company and my reputation just for her..."

"Not for her, but for me!" Damian held his chest. "This is all for me... Please... Give me a chance!"

Darius sighed, turning his face away, his gaze blank as if in deep thought.

"I’ll discuss this matter with Karina properly... So that there won’t be a need for a break in our company’s collaboration with her father even if I cancel our engagement," Damian said convincingly.

"And when you fail to make her understand with your decision, then we’re truly finished!" Darius replied with a sharp look. "You’ll be seen as a man without principles and unable to keep your promises. Then he’ll really influence our business partners not to cooperate with us anymore. And worse, Valerie still won’t accept you... So what’s the point of all these sacrifices?"

Damian fell silent.

"Are you sure she’ll accept you?" Darius asked.

"I’m sure," Damian replied with hesitation. "But I need time. We need time..."

Darius sighed. "If she loves you, she won’t make you wait... I don’t want a change in that decision. You have to stay with Karina, marry her... It’s for the well-being of our family!" he said firmly, then quickly left the room.

Damian stood in confusion, looking around with frustration until he grabbed an ashtray and threw it against the wall.

Shattered.

The ashtray scattered on the floor, Damian gasping, leaning his hands on the table, his gaze so cold, as if harboring resentment and anger.

’I’m sure even if I cancel our engagement, everything will be fine. I’m sure he’s just trying to scare me into accepting Karina; he’s doing this because he doesn’t like me going back to Valerie! he’s cunning; I’m sure he’ll manipulate Valerie’s mind so she won’t accept me again. I can’t let this happen, I can’t!’
