Chapter 296: Chapter 296. Consequence

"What...?" Dao Se couldn’t believe the other two organizations left just like that, especially the Alley Advocates. Aren’t they allies? Did they have no honor?

"Boss, we need to retreat!" Gao Lan told Dao Se. With only them alone, they were severely outnumbered. Not to mention, these Highwaymen appeared to be experienced combatants.

"Grhh...!! Pull back!" Dao Se finally relented.

"Too late!"

Dao Se sensed an incoming attack as he heard the voice. He pushed Gao Lan away. A long spear flew between them and stabbed into the ground.

Gao Pan threw the spear. He appeared beside Gao Lan, who was trying to get back to Dao Se.

"You have always been a weakling," Gao Pan said. He gave Gao Lan a back fist.

Gao Lan used her arms to block but failed to withstand the punch. She flew away with broken arms. She had the cultivation of the Intermediate Transformation Stage while Gao Pan was at the Intermediate Mystic Stage.

Dao Se was still weak from the Fragile Bone Muscle Poison. He couldn’t channel enough aether to use his Water Globe. All he could achieve was executing his weaker art, Water Needle.

The water needle was aimed at Gao Pan’s head. When it was about to connect, a round shield made of earth materialized. The water needle stabbed the earth shield but failed to penetrate. Dao Se’s energy was too weak.

"Haha. Pathetic," Gao Pan ridiculed.

He threw the earth shield. The earth shield slammed into Dao Se’s blocking arms. The shield shattered to pieces. When Dao Se blocked the earth shield, Gao Pan picked up his spear. In one swift motion, he stabbed the spear into Dao Se’s left thigh.

"Ahhh...!!" Dao Se screamed from the pain. His other leg buckled, and he fell to the ground.

"Stop! We surrender...!!" Gao Lan called.

"Surrender?" Gao Pan turned to her. "What is the point of accepting your surrender if I can just wipe you out right here?"

Finished speaking, he lifted his other hand that was not holding the spear. Rock grew from that hand. This rock turned into a large mallet. He brought this rock mallet down, smashing Dao Se’s head.

"Nooo...!!!" Gao Lan screamed.

Dao Se was still alive. He used his hands to support himself. He brought his head up to look at Gao Lan. His face was covered by blood flowing from his cracked scalp. The two exchanged a final glance before Gao Pan’s rock mallet came down a second time. This second smash flattened Dao Se’s head into the ground.

Gao Lan fell weakly to the ground. She lost all the will to fight. The Sewer Snake members witnessing the scene could also not believe their eyes. Just like that, their revered leader was gone. Their morale dropped drastically. Some tried to run.

"Kill them all!" Gao Pan instructed.

His people laughed. They happily carried out the order. That had been their intention from the start. Now that the enemies had lost their morale, that task became easier. The battle turned into a slaughter.

When one of the Highwaymen members was about to behead Gao Lan, who was not moving, Gao Pan stopped him. "Kill everyone except her!" He commanded.

Hearing that command, the member went to hunt for another target.

Gao Pan stood beside Gao Lan. She was sitting weakly on the ground.

"Why spare me...?" she asked.

"Hehe. Don’t worry. I won’t kill you. I will even let you go," Gao Pan said. "However, you need to pay for your life and freedom. You see, I have always had my eyes on you when we were in the Gao Clan. Now that I have my chance, I’m going to have a taste of you."

"You... Animal...!!" Gao Lan spat at him.

"Hehe." He wiped the spit on his shirt. His hand shot out and grabbed her cheeks. His hand was too strong for her to release herself. He then spat on her face point blank.

"That’s right. I’m an animal, and I’m going to fuck you all night tonight like an animal. Hahaha...!!!"

*

After that day, the Sewer Snakes disbanded. With Dao Se dead and Gao Lan missing, the few members who survived the night didn’t know what to do. They eventually went their own ways or joined the other underworld organizations.

The Highwaymen took over most of Sewer Snakes’ territory, especially the districts where the Yan clan was active. It was the Yan Clan who invited them into the city. They were thugs from another city, brought in a few people at a time via the Yan Clan’s recommendation and bribe. They stayed under the radar until it was time to act. All this so the Yan Clan could have a say in the underworld again.

The Highwaymen were recommended by the Gao Clan. Gao Pan might say he didn’t need Gao Clan, but that was far from the truth. It was Gao Clan who gave him the financial support needed to form the Highwaymen. Like the Yan Clan, the Gao Clan also required people in the underworld for unscrupulous needs. When the Yan Clan approached them with a promise of rewards, the Gao Clan agreed to send Gao Pan and his Highwaymen to Qishurg City to aid the Yan Clan.

The Demon Gang also retook the territory they lost to the Alley Advocates and Sewer Snakes. There were some clashes between them and the Highwaymen over some districts. Fights happened but on a small scale. They won some, they lost some. Eventually, an invisible border was drawn, and everyone tried to stay out of each other’s territory.

The Alley Advocates were the most passive among them. They let go of the districts previously owned by the Demon Gang and returned to guarding their original territory. They didn’t care about the other districts as long as the other organizations didn’t come to trouble them.

The situation in the underworld gradually stabilized. While things settled down in the underworld, the same thing couldn’t be said about Amon’s life. The revealing of his identity carried a consequence. A consequence which came to him one day at the Royal Academy.

That one day, he was summoned to the principal’s office. When he arrived, he saw several Yan Clan people in the room. They were sitting by the side of the room.

Amon expected the Royal Academy to want to discuss his extracurricular activities in the city. He didn’t expect Yan Clan to be involved in the issue, but then he noticed Yan Dose among the lot. He understood then why their presence here. Among the Yan Clan was also the constable, Yan Fan.

The last person from the Yan Clan was one he knew only from his Demon Gang’s intel. This person was Yan Wansui. He was Yan Dose’s uncle and the younger brother to the clan head of Yan Clan.

On the Royal Academy’s side were Li Niang, Lao Zen, An Guan, and the vice principal, Fei Wung.

"Student Lin Mo, do you know why you are called to this hearing?" Li Niang asked.

"I can hazard a guess," Amon replied.

"Don’t try to act smart, asshole! Your time here is finished!" Yan Dose lashed out.

"Dose, you promised to behave if we brought you. Do not shame us," Yan Fan admonished.

Yan Dose shut his mouth, but he was still staring dagger at Amon. Amon ignored him and walked in front of the Royal Academy panel sitting behind a long desk. No chair was provided for him, so he stood in front of the panel.

Li Niang nodded at Lao Zen, who began his speech, "Student Lin Mo, you have been summoned here because we have received troubling news about your involvement with the underworld in the city. You should understand it is an unspoken rule that respectable citizens like us are not involved with such shady lots. Even more so for a Royal Academy student. Do you deny this allegation?"

"I do not," Amon replied.

"It’s good that you didn’t deny this. It saves us from presenting evidence," Fei Wung said. He then asked, "I’m curious, though. Why did you do it?"

"Because I don’t know," Amon answered with a shrug. "Like the head tutor said. It is an unspoken rule. Since it is not spoken, how do I know? I simply made friends when I roam the streets. Before I knew it, I was with the underworld organization."

The four on the panel showed surprised expressions. They didn’t expect such an innocent answer.

"Fuck you! Who do you think we are? Four-year-olds?!" Yan Dose burst again.

Li Niang glanced at him. Yan Fan gave her an apologetic face. He placed a hand on Yan Dose’s shoulder. It might seem like a simple touch, but Yan Dose’s expression changed after that hand was on his shoulder.

"Hahaha!" A burst of laughter broke the awkward atmosphere in the room. It was An Guan who laughed. "Well, I guess we can’t argue with that. We never truly state that students are not allowed to be involved in the underworld."

"Hm... That’s true," Fei Wung nodded.

Yan Dose seemed to want to say something but couldn’t. It was his uncle, Yan Wansui, sitting next to him who spoke.

"I see that the Royal Academy doesn’t wish to deal with this issue seriously. If you want to keep this student here, so be it. However, he needs to answer for his crime of killing a member of our clan!"
