Rise of The Strongest Monarch-Chapter 72: A Pit
I didn’t really hesitate to get comfy for the night since I’m exhausted, especially since I haven’t slept since we left the church.
The makeshift beds aren’t really that bad for something that we just put together, but I do think it is enough for tonight.
I turnover, my vision facing the right side of the tent, away from the opening. Nobody else is inside of the tent with me so I don’t have to worry about anyone watching me.
Mostly it was amelia and her fascination with the infection in my arm, not that I really blame her for being so curious about it.
"Anyone would be interested when a human is still alive after being inflicted with an infection like this," Celeste says with more of a calm tone in her voice now.
I knew you’d show up when everyone else disappeared for the night.
"I’ve been trying to understand what I can do to avoid the reaction from earlier," Celeste responds. "There’s just no clear paths for me to follow."
Paths? I don’t really know what you see from inside my body but it sounds kind of weird when you say that. I just know that I need you to keep it from happening no matter what.
At least don’t let it happen when we decide what to do about the pit; I have a feeling that we’ll be going down into it tomorrow.
"I’ll do my best," Celeste assures me.
Wriggle.
I feel the weird sensation go through my arm one more time before falling asleep, the night feels as if it goes by pretty quick, even though you can’t tell the time.
No nightmares troubled me during my rest, something that I can appreciate when out in enemy territory like this.
Stretch.
I finish stretching after sitting up in the bed, but I can hear the others outside, talking.
Everyone else seems to be awake already... guess I am the only one who decided to sleep in today. I definitely needed it after the amount of fighting I did yesterday.
I fought on the trip here and then against the goliath; that fight took a lot out of me, even though I couldn’t do a damn thing to kill it.
Zeno taking care of it did educate me quite a bit on what I need to accomplish in the future. Finding a way to access the luminous dominion will be my way to wipe out stronger zierel like the goliath.
I look down at my right hand, noticing a shimmer of light that passes through it.
Maybe that is one of the signs I need to figure out how the power works, or I’m just getting ahead of myself with no actual evidence here.
Aether isn’t going to give me any hints about the power since he believes in me figuring it out on my own. It is dumb to look at it any other way.
I stand up from the bed and adjust my cloak before heading out of the tent. The group is just standing out here looking towards the pit.
"Did we figure out how we are handling the pit?" I ask, loud enough for them all to hear.
Airi looks slightly over her shoulder towards me.
"We are going to head down into it," She answers with a serious expression on her face.
"I kind of expected it," I say while walking up to them.
"Liam, just make sure you can withstand it," Airi replies with worry in her voice.
The serious expression doesn’t go away, but I can definitely hear the worry in her words.
"Again, I’ll be able to handle it," I say with confidence.
"No reason for us to stand around staring at it, let’s go," Zeno interrupts with a laid back tone.
A small opening appears within the barrier around the pit and the pressure from before immediately rushes past me.
I wait for a few seconds as the others start to walk; to my surprise I don’t feel anything different in my body as the pressure continues to grow.
"I told you I will try my best to withstand it," Celeste speaks up.
It is definitely appreciated since I don’t know how deep this pit is. It could take us awhile to reach the bottom so I hope you’ll be able to hold out until then.
"I’ll do what I can," Celeste responds with a bit of pain noticeable in her voice.
After she answers me I continue to follow behind the others as we reach the opening to the pit. The darkness going down is definitely a lot worse than what we deal with on a day to day basis.
It really is like looking down into the abyss itself.
A couple of seconds go by before Zeno begins to send some light down along the walls of the pit. Each one doesn’t seem to help that much, not that I can notice a difference.
"A little bit of help is better than none," Zeno says casually.
"I’ll take some light over nothing at all," Amelia speaks with a calm tone in her voice.
Airi doesn’t seem to be phased by the darkness of the out like I am.
"How are we going to start the climb down?" I ask with a curious tone.
Zeno looks towards me.
"Obviously we will just climb down with our hands," Zeno responds with a blank expression on his face.
"Right," I reply while keeping a calm tone.
He turns away after answering my question, his focus back on the pit.
It doesn’t take long after that for him to take the lead; he hunches down by the edge and begins to climb down the pit.
Amelia and Airi follow behind him as I take one last look at the opening.
I have a feeling that I won’t be seeing that opening again anytime soon, especially with how far down this pit could go. This will definitely be a long climb.
