Rune Matrix: Programming Magic After Transmigration-Chapter 117: Burn
"Of course, you can teach a treatment method that does not require magic to all people, right? Like how Elenor saved the man who fell from the roof. Many men who otherwise must have lost their lives could be saved by doing it, right?" Zephyr injected some of his ideas into her mind.
"Are you saying that all knowledge about healing magic should be public?"
The simple question of what a kidney stone is somehow led to the freedom of information topic.
"Why not?" Zephyr raised an eyebrow. "Any knowledge that can save a person’s life should be given away for free, right? For example, if drinking water periodically can save you from pain and suffering brought to you by kidney stones, it should be taught, right?"
He was sowing doubts, creating new ideals in her mind, slowly making her understand the reality of the world.
"HM! It’s being taught." She replied, confused.
"To whom?"
"Of course, to the people attending healing magic courses in the academy."
Zephyr scoffed.
"That’s the problem. It’s only being taught to them. A normal person has no other way but to rely on those healers to save them. If not for accumulating power or wealth, why do they do it this way?"
Aurelia was the gullible kind.
She was both gullible and kind.
Speaking his mind to her was not going to be a problem at a later time. Zephyr was almost sure of it.
"I read books so that I can learn to live a better life. However, most of the people I have come across cannot read. No one teaches them, nor could they buy a book to learn it. It’s as if you don’t want the people of your kingdom to be smart. It’s as if the nobles don’t want them to be successful."
Aurelia paused. She had to admit a lot of what he said made sense. The bottom line was that learning a language was mostly something the upper class got to do. A few regular folks might pick it up, but only so they could be useful to the nobles.
The peasant class and below never even tries. Not because they didn’t want to. Because even if they did, there was no real use for it. And because it was a waste of money.
After all, buying a book would cost them a year’s wages. Why would they spend it on something that’s not useful?
"You know that books cost a lot of money, right?" Aurelia asked, not liking the comment about how he said the noble class wants to keep the lesser class ignorant.
"Magic can move mountains, and yet, you haven’t found a way to make books cheap! If you ask me, that’s one bad excuse." Zephyr scoffed.
"It’s easy for you to say." Aurelia pouted. "It’s not like you have found a method to it?" She added.
"If I want to, I can. It’s not that hard." Zephyr, who was from a different world, had seen what a printing press is. With magic, reverse engineering something like that would be easy. Besides that, he could also upgrade the paper-making process.
Many thoughts flashed through his mind, all reassuring that it was possible.
"Then prove it to me," Aurelia said. "Anyone say anything they want. I will believe you when you prove to me that you have a better way.
"Okay. When we reach the capital city, let’s do it. Before that, let’s kill all the rabbits."
Zephyr turned to look at the ground. The thousands of rabbits, lying on the ground, came into view. Most of them were curled up, sleeping. The berserk effect they had seemed to have receded from the sleeping ones.
The rest, still awake, had red eyes and bulked up bodies.
"How are you going to do that? You can barely use any magic without killing yourself."
Zephyr scoffed.
"That’s why I said magic is not the answer to all questions. Sometimes, you just have to think a little harder." He said, turning to look at the other elevated platforms nearby.
"How much time would it take you to bring everyone to a single large platform?" He inquired.
"You need my help? I thought you could do it without magic." Aurelia made a snide comment.
"I sure can. But I want everyone to live, too." Zephyr replied. "Once I am done with it, no one will be left standing. So, I need a way to ensure they can be safe."
"Oh! You are being mysterious."
"Say, how long would it take?"
"I am recovered to my full mana capacity. So, it will take about an hour or two." She scrutinised every one of his movements. "So, what are you going to do?" She asked.
"We are going to burn down everything before the monster comes and attacks us," Zephyr replied with a smile.
Elenor, who was trying to sleep, sat up, wide awake.
"The entire village." He added.
"Are you crazy?" Aurelia couldn’t believe it.
"HAHA ah ha ha." Zephyr laughed like a madman. Then, suddenly, he stopped and shook his head.
"Just kidding." He said. "We are not going to burn down everything. Only a little bit."
"That’s not any better."
"My lady, don’t do it. The young man is crazy." Elenor warned, standing up.
The bags underneath her eyes had deepened in color. She was barely staying awake.
"Not as crazy as you, mad woman. You wanted to kill me for emptying my bladder. Nothing could be worse than that." Zephyr fought back.
"Shameless young man, don’t remind me of it. I let you go this time because she saved you."
Elenor rubbed her eyes, agitated. She shifted her gaze to Aurelia.
"My lady, you shouldn’t believe him. He is a crazy person."
Zephyr frowned.
"I am not crazy. But you are making me extremely mad, murderous woman." Zephyr’s temper began to rise.
Aurelia had it with them. She stomped her foot on the ground.
"Thud."
The hard sole collided with the stone platform, creating a heavy thud.
"Both of you stop. We can decide who is crazy and mad at a later time. Zephyr, explain yourself."
"Hm."
Zephyr hummed, sneering at Elenor.
"Let me explain."
