She is the Side Character! — Watch Her Change her fate!-Chapter 254: Must You Marry Your Savior After Being Rescued from the Water? (Part 25)
"Hey kid, what have you been doing around the County Government all day today?" After a busy day, Shen Dai finally asked his usually idle, lazy, good-for-nothing youngest son.
He’d already given up on hoping this son would achieve anything.
As long as the kid doesn’t cause trouble, it’s already a blessing.
Maybe his eldest son is too talented, and the heavens couldn’t watch anymore, so they gave him a son with no ambitions.
Apart from this, the youngest’s temperament isn’t too bad, Shen Dai thought to himself, comforting himself this way.
Shen Xuan glanced around and mentally asked the system: "System, is anyone eavesdropping?"
The system could check if anyone was around, so he had to use this feature.
System: "Host, no one is eavesdropping."
Feeling relieved, Shen Xuan leaned close to Shen Dai: "Dad, can you tell me about Your Majesty?"
"Huh?" Shen Dai was surprised. Why is this kid suddenly asking about such things? And he’s asking about the Emperor. Is he planning something? But since his youngest has never stirred up big trouble, Shen Dai felt a bit at ease.
Probably overheard something and asked out of curiosity.
Your Majesty is indeed wise and mighty. Anyone with a smidge of knowledge about him would admire him. If you ever came into contact with him, you’d know how great his aspirations are. This is an Emperor who truly considers the people, worth his utmost loyalty.
Seeing the curious look on his son’s face, Shen Dai decided to talk about the Emperor’s brilliance.
Watching his dad’s fanboy-like demeanor, Shen Xuan was somewhat speechless. But he had to admit, this Emperor was indeed someone worth following, and he couldn’t blame his father.
Finally, Shen Dai remembered something and added, "Father made a great mistake, and the Emperor didn’t punish me, which was merciful. I’m content being a small County Magistrate here with no resentment towards that matter."
He almost forgot his own misdeeds amidst his praise.
Seeing his son’s speechless expression, he coughed lightly, "That’s how it is."
This kid still had some sense, Shen Dai believed.
Shen Xuan nodded, "Got it, Dad."
"Dad, how many children does Your Majesty have?"
As he was asking, he figured he should get clarity on these matters since he didn’t pay much attention to them before. If there’s a way not to get his hands dirty, he wouldn’t go down that path. Starting a business is hard enough, let alone conquering a country.
Moreover, he doesn’t wish for chaos, where everyone’s life will become unbearable.
In truth, he’s naturally a laid-back person who only strived in his past life for money. During countless times when he wanted to give up, it was his only family member who encouraged him at every step, involving them in every decision. Without this relative’s help in analyzing problems, he might’ve taken many wrong paths.
He gritted his teeth to continue because he wanted to earn enough money to invest in medicine and technology, hoping his incredibly bright, though accident-stricken and paralyzed elder brother, could stand once more.
Just as he succeeded, his brother’s life ended, not living to see that day.
But he didn’t give up his career because, without anyone to prompt him, he no longer cared for his health, working day and night, leading to his untimely death. He wanted to enjoy life, but his past purpose was to enjoy it with his brother.
Both brothers had short lives.
He got slightly luckier, somehow traversing to another world, spending over ten carefree years.
Yet, occasionally he reminisces about his elder brother, with whom he shared everything, feeling regretful.
"If I take my tasks seriously, would there be a chance to return to that world’s past?" he asked the system.
System: "Host, I don’t know. Perhaps you could try. You have to perform tasks anyway, so why not give it a shot, right?"
Shen Xuan: "I want to curse at you."
"Sure, curse if it makes you feel better," the system replied.
Shen Dai commented thoughtfully, "The Emperor hasn’t married yet, and currently, there isn’t anyone in the palace."
There are two reasons.
One is that the Emperor isn’t in a hurry about such matters at first.
The second is that whenever he decided on a lady, an accident would occur, leading to rumors describing him as a jinx against women.
Many speculate if someone is deliberately targeting him.
The Emperor shared that the lady he favored met trouble even before he made a move, making him think there’s something to it.
Thus, Shen Dai was left without explanations, having no choice but to believe in fate.
The Emperor isn’t one to force matters, having not revisited this issue for years, even suggesting that if no suitable candidate arises, choosing a successor from the Imperial Family would suffice, reassuring the ministers.
These words were something Shen Dai wouldn’t reveal to his youngest.
Frowning, Shen Xuan realized there were only two paths: either protect the Emperor or prepare to take over himself.
Currently, he couldn’t approach the power vortex or disclose this matter, for no one would believe him.
If he couldn’t protect the Emperor, the chaos that followed might allow him a chance, but it’s not a certainty. In times of turmoil, who knows what could happen?
Given what his father mentioned, he thought protecting the Emperor might be more feasible.
"Sir, Scholar Ying is here to ask for your guidance on some academic matters," an outside voice interrupted Shen Xuan’s thoughts.
Deciding to stay put, he didn’t rush to leave.
If he planned to step into the open, he needed to connect with others. Ying Bairong seemed knowledgeable, so making friends wouldn’t hurt.
"Aren’t you leaving?" Shen Dai scolded.
Shen Xuan replied seriously, "Dad, let me listen in too." 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺
"You understand?" Shen Dai rebuked again.
"Consider it as some informal training," Shen Xuan said nonchalantly, lounging with crossed legs, planning to mingle outside without raising suspicions.
When Ying Bairong entered and noticed Shen Xuan, he hesitated briefly.
Thinking that if his matter was true, it couldn’t stay hidden, and knowing Second Young Master Shen wasn’t part of Qin Cheng’s group, he proceeded.
He handed the note over.
Upon reading it, Shen Dai slammed the table in anger.
Shen Xuan took the note to read, his expression shifting, realizing what Ying Bairong had seen, he could also see.
In this case, Miss Lin was likely being used too.
"Dad, we mustn’t let them go!" Shen Xuan declared, slamming the note onto the table, "Turn their plot against them, and if they’re truly harming others, they must be punished!"
Shen Dai thought, Why so agitated?
This kid actually knows how to counter-plot.
Ying Bairong remained silent, thinking, Does Second Young Master Shen value him so much to be this angry?
"I have arrangements. Rest assured, if the note speaks true, they won’t escape justice," Shen Dai reassured Ying Bairong, "You may leave now."
Feeling relieved, Ying Bairong thanked them both before departing.
He didn’t expect Second Young Master Shen to value him so highly. Despite his reputation as a playboy, being appreciated felt good.
Once Ying Bairong was gone, Shen Dai asked, "Why so worked up?"
"Dad, if I want to marry Miss Lin, you won’t stop me, right?" Shen Xuan asked with a grin.
Shen Dai: ...
Lin Chen, huh? No wonder he was so agitated earlier.
He had already looked into the Lin Family, especially since he had suspicions about Qin Cheng and Shi Wen previously.
Combining all, Lin Chen was likely targeted too.
"That Lin Daming isn’t easy to please. Just because you’re the County Magistrate’s son doesn’t mean he’ll look kindly upon you. Can you really handle him?" Shen Dai doubted.
From Lin Chen’s past actions, she’s evidently not ordinary.
Shen Xuan was surprised his father knew Lin Daming wasn’t simple. Indeed, he had some insight.
"As long as you don’t oppose, it’s fine. Leave the rest," Shen Xuan said.
Shen Dai: "What if I disagree?"
"As long as Miss Lin agrees," Shen Xuan said, "Even though you are my father, unfounded objections don’t work on me, especially those about social standing."
Shen Dai scoffed, "What do I have to object? If someone puts you in your place, I should thank our ancestors."
Shen Xuan was speechless, thinking that was a bit harsh.
"Thank you, Dad, for agreeing," Shen Xuan obediently bowed, feeling words didn’t matter as long as there was agreement, "Dad, I’ll be leaving now."
"You should, go ponder how to win Lin Daming over," Shen Dai teased.
Not willing to leave without a comeback, Shen Xuan retorted, "Miss Lin should like me."
He could sense it.
Otherwise, she wouldn’t treasure his words!
Shen Dai burst into laughter, amused that his son was finally eager about something, "Off you go."
This was good, someone had finally managed to deal with the kid.
