Single Spell Sorcerer-Chapter 139: Roman
Chapter 139: Roman
Roman showed off his skills in battle from the very first encounter. When they faced a pair of Four-armed Monkeys, he cast a spell that improved the slashing damage of attacks, using it on Melayne to enhance her sword strikes. The effect was immediately noticeable aas her blade cut through the creatures with significantly more force than before, slicing through what would normally require multiple strikes.
"That’s a useful enhancement," Melayne commented as she easily killed the monkey.
Roman had a healing spell for when people took damage as well, which he used efficiently throughout their fights. The magic manifested as a soft green glow that closed wounds and restored stamina.
When Ning purposefully took a nasty scratch from a monkey’s claws, Roman was ready with the healing before anyone even asked for it.
Roman also had another spell that could temporarily improve someone’s defensive capabilities, which he used. But because of the relatively easy encounters, no one really got to see just how much it improved them by.
Roman had no opportunity to show off his best spell ’Total Cleanse’ during normal combat, but because he wanted to let the others know what he was capable of doing, he decided to demonstrate it anyway. When they encountered a Red-Eyed Tiger that could roar to lower their strength by a little, he used the spell immediately.
"This removes all temporary and removable debuffs from someone," he explained, casting it on Melayne who was up front. She felt right as rain afterward.
The spell worked on every debuff except the permanent ones, and the ones that constantly kept reapplying on the person, like the one from the Spider Queen’s nest or the Lakeborn Monkey’s swamp.
Jax was impressed. "That could be incredibly useful in the trials."
They fought through the monsters of the Billowing Woods with relative ease. Whether it was Four-armed Monkeys, Red-eyed Tigers, or the annoying Swarm of Chestnut Squirrels that attacked in coordinated groups of dozens, they defeated all of them without much trouble.
The squirrels were particularly frustrating opponents. They were individually weak but overwhelming in numbers. Roman had to show off how he could keep his party members continue fighting in such dire situations by constantly healing them and buffing them.
By the time it was time to leave, he was rightfully exhausted.
Sadly, they didn’t find the boss of the Billowing Woods, so they had to return without much success in terms of major loot. The smaller monsters provided a decent number of Opal stones, but since it had to be split between 5 people, it wasn’t that much to them in the end.
They also hadn’t earned that much to begin with on account of this day being more so to test Roman than to hunt the monster.
Once they were back in the city, they talked to Roman about what he had done and praised his performance.
"You did well out there today. Nice timing on those spells," Lucille said. "You must’ve trained a lot."
"And the damage enhancement made a real difference," Melayne added. "I felt like I was fighting with a completely different weapon."
Roman gave a simple grin. "Thank you for your words," he said. "Does this mean I can join the party?"
"We still need a few more days to see what you can truly do, then we can make the decision," Lucille said, "So, you’ll have more opportunities to show us your capabilities. But if the next few days go anything like today, you’re in."
Roman left happily, promising to do better tomorrow. His enthusiasm was genuine and infectious, which to Jax was a complete contrast to how Carlton was.
"I truly think things became easier because he was around," Jax said.
Ning nodded. "He has a bunch of weak spells in comparison, but the way he uses them makes it quite useful. I think he might actually be what our party needs to become balanced."
Everyone else nodded.
The remaining four talked among themselves about whether Roman was right for them. They returned to their loding, continuing their talk. Roman was decent enough that they didn’t want to look at anyone else.
But, they still had to test him a little.
Ning made a suggestion then. "Let’s see how he reacts when there’s a change. He doesn’t know much about us yet, so he needs to be ready for just how chaotic our fights tend to get."
Lucille nodded in agreement. "We don’t always fight the same way. Sometimes the situation demands different tactics. Sometimes, I may even fight with a sword."
Jax and Meylane gave her a weird look. "You want to fight with a sword?"
Lucille shrugged. "I’m not saying I want to. I’m just saying that I can," she said. "After all, it’s not that difficult since one really only needs a few good skills to be capable with their sword. I just need some time to learn those skills."
Jax was reminded of something at that moment. "Wait, didn’t you say you would teach me a skill after we came out of the forest?" he asked.
"Did I?" Lucille asked.
"You did," Ning replied. "The Telekinesis one. You called it something else."
"Ah! Navi Manipulation. Sure, I can teach you that," Lucille said. "It’s really simple actually, you just use your Navi to move things around." freewёbnoνel.com
She easily picked up a glass from the table and brought it to her hand. She caught it and rank from it. Jax was stunned, and so was Melayne.
"Can I learn it too?" Melayne asked.
Lucille thought for a bit and nodded. "It won’t be as useful to you as it will for him, but you can learn that too." She turned to Ning next. "Do you want to learn as well?"
Ning shook his head. "I don’t think I’ll be needing it. I can train on my own."
Lucille accepted his words and turned to the other two. "I can teach you starting tomorrow. For now, what do we think about switching our roles?"
Jax accepted the idea. "I think we should do it."
