Single Spell Sorcerer-Chapter 140: Fifth Member
Chapter 140: Fifth Member
The next day, they changed the way they fought entirely.
This time, Melayne was at the back, helping defend Roman and Lucille while using her bow and arrows instead of her sword. Her archery skills were good enough, and she provided cover fire from a distance.
At the front, Ning remained a spearman, fighting the same way as he had the other day. His weapon gave him the reach needed to engage multiple enemies while maintaining some defensive capability.
But Jax had instead become the main fighter, using his axe and abandoning his whip entirely. He used his spell to bind the monster from time to time, charging into melee combat with enhanced strength and speed.
Roman was surprised and confused by the abrupt change in fighting patterns and roles of the party. He was entirely dumbfounded during the first fight, unsure who he was supposed to help. His eyes darted between the party members as he tried to figure out the new dynamic.
He started to cast his slashing damage enhancement on Melayne, then stopped when he saw her use her bow. The buff wouldn’t work on her at all. Instead, he needed to use it on Jax who was fighting with an axe.
Having to let go of the bare minimum instinct he had formed in his body after yesterday’s fight was difficult, but he did it.
By the end of that fight, he realized who needed the most help and adjusted his support accordingly. Jax, being in the thick of combat, required the most healing and defensive support, while Melayne and Lucille needed close to no help at all.
Once the battle was done, he looked around at the four with a confused look.
"Why did you guys change?" he asked, genuine curiosity in his voice.
"To test you," Lucille said.
"We fight however we like," Jax explained. "Most of us, except Ning, have different ways of fighting. Different situations call for different approaches, so we need someone who can adapt to every situation. We wanted to see how well you could do it."
Roman nodded thoughtfully. "I think I get it. Still, you guys surprised me. Also, if you’re gonna change like this, you could’ve at least done the least and let me know."
Jax nodded. "We absolutely will for a regular party member, but you’re still being tested, and we need to see how quickly you can adapt to the situation. We can’t always plan what we have to do, and you’re the one who it will all fall on to support us when we do things outside of what is planned. We need to see how you would react." freeweɓnovēl.coɱ
"I think he did pretty well," Ning said from the side. "Honestly, he used his spells on the correct person and on time. I can’t expect much from a supporting member. That’s really all that is needed, isn’t it?"
Melayne nodded. "That was good, but let us continue and see if you can keep up."
Roman was vigilant the entire day, watching his party with careful consideration. He needed to be on the lookout for when one of them randomly decided to change their way of fighting.
The hunt was over, so they returned at the end of the day as the sun began to set over Fang Heights. The group had seen enough to form their opinions about Roman’s capabilities.
Still, they wanted to give it one last try, with some added intensity.
The next day, things really did get more intense.
Roman was surprised to see all four of them fighting at once when they encountered their first monster.
Even Lucille, the sorceress of the group, held a sword and was fighting alongside the others. She wasn’t as strong as the other three for close-combat battles, but she definitely had the necessary skill to hold her own.
Watching four fighters fight at the same time confused Roman even more than the previous day’s role changes. The battlefield was chaos with constant motion and fights all in the same place.
He used his spells from time to time, but now he had to be much more strategic about it.
’Strong Edge’ went on Jax or Melayne with their sharp weapons, boosting their damage output when they were in prime striking positions.
’Heal’ went on whoever was wounded, which was more frequent now that everyone was taking risks in close combat.
’Guard Assist’ went on whoever needed a boost in their defense, usually whoever was about to face multiple opponents.
’Enhance Speed’ went on Ning to give him a boost of speed when the spearman needed it.
And from time to time, he used ’Total Cleanse’ to remove all debuffs from the fight, keeping everyone at peak performance despite the various status effects the monsters inflicted.
The fighting was so chaotic most of the time that Roman had a hard time deciding who to use his spells on. Sometimes he’d start casting on one person only to see they’d already moved away or that someone else needed help more urgently.
But he still made more right decisions than wrong ones. He just needed a little more experience with their particular style of combat.
As the battles continued throughout the day, he became better and better at reading the flow of combat. He started anticipating who would need help before they even called for it, and his spell timing became more precise. By the end of the day, he was more than good enough.
When the battle ended and they returned once again to the city, they made their decision. They gathered on the street, and Lucille spoke for the party.
"We want you to join our party."
Roman was surprised. "I... I thought it would take longer," he said, looking around at their faces to make sure they were serious.
"You’re more than good enough. You’re great for us," Melayne said. "The way you adapted to our fighting style, especially today, is exactly what we need."
Roman was excited, his face lighting up with genuine joy.
"Thank you. I would love to join the party."
Roman joined them. They finally had their fifth and final member.
