Serena Yardley hurriedly ate her food, not daring to lift her head.
What she failed to notice was that Gabriel Galloway, sitting opposite her, had his eyes fixed on her.
His stare was so intense that it didn’t escape the notice of the ever-perceptive Ethan Yardley.
His sharp, icy eyes landed on Gabriel Galloway. "I don’t believe we’ve met," he said. "Fifth Madam, is this your boyfriend?"
As it stood, only Fifth Madam was unmarried, while Sixth Madam was still just a child.
Seeing the man’s unfamiliar face, Ethan Yardley assumed he must be Fifth Madam’s boyfriend.
Fifth Madam immediately shot back, "What nonsense are you talking about? He’s still a student. He’s Miss Shepherd’s younger brother, Raina’s uncle."
Ethan Yardley glanced at Gabriel Galloway again, his handsome face grim, and said nothing more.
Raina looked up with a smile. "Ethan, what do you think? My uncle is super handsome, right? He could almost rival you."
Ethan Yardley snorted but didn’t answer.
Gabriel Galloway took the initiative, offering his hand to Ethan Yardley. "A pleasure. I’m Gabriel Galloway."
Ethan Yardley reluctantly shook his hand, then, ignoring everyone else, leaned close to Serena Yardley’s ear and whispered, "Did you come running here by yourself just to tattle on me?"
Serena Yardley turned to meet the man’s gaze, glaring at him. "That’s right."
"Hmph!"
Ethan Yardley let out a cold snort. As he sat up straight, his thin lips pressed into a tight line, he again saw Gabriel Galloway looking at the woman beside him.
When his gaze fell on Serena Yardley, however, he saw that she kept her head down, looking as if she had a guilty conscience.
’But they’re from completely different worlds,’ he thought. ’There’s no way they know each other.’
As lunch drew to a close, Master Yardley finally spoke.
"My birthday wish this year isn’t for a big, bustling party. All I ask is that I’m holding a great-grandchild by this time next year."
His gaze fell upon Serena Yardley as he said,
"Ethan’s wife, let me be perfectly clear. Have one baby, and I’ll reward you with a hundred million. Boy or girl, I don’t care. You’re young; having a child shouldn’t be a problem for you, right?"
Serena Yardley was an orphan with nothing to her name. For her to marry into the Yardley family—the richest in the country—Master Yardley’s lack of objection was naturally because he saw her as obedient and pretty.
The Yardley family had more money than anything else, so they didn’t care about the family backgrounds of their sons’ or grandsons’ wives. As long as they could bear children, it was enough.
Of course, it was also mainly because their sons and grandsons liked them.
Upon hearing this, Serena Yardley quickly looked up, only to find everyone staring at her. She was instantly flushed with embarrassment, unsure how to respond.
’I’m already pregnant,’ she wanted to say. ’It won’t be long before you can hold your great-grandchild.’
But in the next second!
Ethan Yardley, beside her, spoke up. "I have my own plans when it comes to having children. You don’t need to worry about it for us, Grandpa."
Master Yardley’s temper instantly flared. "Was I talking to you?
This is her duty as the wife of a Yardley grandson. It’s her task. If she can’t even do this one simple thing, then tell me, why did the Yardley family bring her here in the first place?"
Serena Yardley felt as if she were the one being inexplicably reprimanded.
She abruptly stood up and looked at Master Yardley. "Grandpa, the truth is, I..."
"I’m childfree."
Ethan Yardley cut Serena Yardley off. He pulled her back down into her seat as he rose to his feet and announced to everyone,
"I, Ethan Yardley, do not intend to have children in this lifetime. So it’s useless for you to pressure her."
Serena Yardley was speechless.
She whipped her head around to stare at Ethan Yardley, her expression one of stunned disbelief.
’Not long ago, he told Sylvia Schuyler that they would divorce as soon as I gave birth to his child.’
’But now he’s telling everyone that he’s childfree.’
’So, does that mean even if I’m pregnant with his child, he won’t want it?’
Lowering her head, Serena Yardley felt as if a knife had been plunged into her chest and was being viciously twisted.
However!
The atmosphere in the dining room instantly solidified. No one dared to make a peep; they barely dared to breathe.
A moment later, Master Yardley flew into a thunderous rage. He swept the dinnerware in front of him off the table and bellowed, "Ethan Yardley, you say that again."
Even though he was a man in his seventies, his aura was still overpowering, his face a mask of authority.
Ethan Yardley repeated, his voice unhurried, "I said, I’m childfree. I will never have children in this lifetime."
"You unfilial grandson!"
Furious, Master Yardley grabbed a dish and hurled it at Ethan Yardley.
Ethan Yardley dodged it with a simple sidestep.
The others scrambled to their feet, some rushing to placate Master Yardley while others pulled Ethan Yardley aside to scold him.
"Ethan, it’s your grandfather’s birthday! How could you provoke him like this?"
"Ethan, you’re the sole male heir of your generation in the Yardley family! How can you decide to be childfree?"
"Ethan, apologize to your grandfather."
"Ethan, you know perfectly well what having a child means for the Yardley family. If you remain childfree, you’ll be ending the family line!"
Ethan Yardley turned a deaf ear to their words.
He turned and grabbed Serena Yardley’s hand. "We’re leaving."
Serena Yardley, who had been frightened by the old man’s outburst, was standing to the side with her head bowed.
When Ethan Yardley took her small hand, she didn’t pull away and silently followed behind him.
Seeing Ethan Yardley leaving, Master Yardley pointed at his back, fuming and sputtering as he yelled,
"Ethan Yardley, are you trying to be the death of me! How could the Yardley family have produced a monster like you! What kind of man are you if you won’t have children? COUGH, COUGH COUGH..."
He tried to continue yelling, but his anger brought on a violent coughing fit.
Everyone rushed over, talking over each other as they tried to comfort the old man.
Gabriel Galloway, however, stood to the side with a grave expression on his face. He watched the two of them disappear from the dining room with a complex look in his eyes, remaining motionless for a long time.
After leaving the main hall and crossing the garden in the mansion’s front courtyard, Ethan Yardley pulled Serena Yardley straight toward his car.
Halfway there, Serena Yardley suddenly stopped and looked at Ethan Yardley, confused.
"You’re not really childfree, so why did you tell everyone that? Are you afraid that after we divorce, Sylvia Schuyler won’t be able to conceive, and you’re worried they’ll give her a hard time?"
That was the only explanation she could come up with.
Otherwise, why would the man who had always seemed to like children suddenly tell everyone he was childfree?
Ethan Yardley’s expression darkened considerably. He looked back at Serena Yardley. "Yes."
Hearing him say yes, Serena Yardley felt her heart being brutally ripped apart, torn into several bloody pieces that could never heal.
Her eyes began to sting, as if filled with sand.
But she painfully held it in, refusing to let herself cry.
"If that’s the case, then let’s go. Let’s go back and get divorced."
’He doesn’t need her to have his child anymore. He’s even planned out a future for Sylvia Schuyler.’
’So why should she, the wife in this fake marriage, shamelessly stay here?’
’Serena Yardley, just go. Leave this man. At least you can keep some of your dignity.’
"My thoughts exactly."
Without hesitating, Ethan Yardley stepped forward and pulled open the car door.
Serena Yardley didn’t get in the passenger seat, climbing into the back instead.
All the way home, she fought back tears, telling herself that she was a grown-up now. She didn’t need his protection anymore.
’Even without him, I’m twenty years old. I can work and support myself and the baby in my belly.’
’Serena Yardley, you have to be strong. Don’t let that man look down on you or think you can’t live without him.’
’But my heart hurts so much.’
’I’m losing control. I really, really want to cry.’
Ethan Yardley, who was driving, glanced in the rearview mirror and saw the woman in the back seat, saw the fragile wall of strength she was desperately trying to maintain.
He spoke calmly, "Don’t worry. After the divorce, you can stay at The Sovereign Villa. I’ll be the one to move out."
