Sir, Please Sign Here to Get a Divorce-Chapter 6: The Mistress Comes to the Door
Arriving at the parking lot, Serena Yardley spotted the most luxurious car, a black stretch Lincoln, parked a good distance away.
The assistant saw Serena Yardley too and quickly got out to open the car door for her.
As Serena Yardley got into the car, she saw the man in the back seat, dressed in a black suit.
He exuded the irresistible charm of a mature man.
But she acted as if she hadn’t seen him, quietly taking a seat beside him.
Ethan Yardley looked at the young woman beside him, seemingly having forgotten their earlier unpleasantness.
His brow furrowed slightly, and his voice was gentle. "You didn’t go to the lecture?"
’In any case, he hadn’t seen her from the stage.’
’His Serena was prettier than the average student; he could always spot her in a crowd.’
’But he hadn’t seen her in the school auditorium today.’
Serena Yardley turned her head to look out the window, deliberately avoiding his gaze, but still answered, "I didn’t go."
"Why not?"
"I figured the man who wants to divorce me wouldn’t want to see me there."
"Hm???"
Ethan Yardley frowned, exasperated.
He raised a hand to put his arm around her. "Still angry?"
Serena Yardley coldly shook off his hand. "Mr. Yardley, please keep your hands to yourself."
Ethan Yardley was speechless.
’This girl is like a little hedgehog.’
He forcefully turned her to face him and coaxed softly, "Don’t be angry anymore. I came all the way to school to pick you up, didn’t I?"
Full of defiance, Serena Yardley pushed his hand away again and turned her back to him. "Were you here to pick me up? You were here for your lecture."
"Then do you know why I came to give the lecture?"
"Who knows."
"If you don’t know, then don’t make things up. And stop sulking. Turn around and look at me."
Ethan Yardley’s patience was wearing thin.
’When had he ever been this accommodating to anyone?’
’But she was just getting more and more disrespectful.’
Serena Yardley was furious, but in the face of this domineering older man, she sometimes had no choice but to obey him.
She turned toward him, her head bowed, feeling so wronged she wanted to cry.
Looking at her pitiable state, Ethan Yardley felt a pang of tenderness.
He raised his arms, pulled her into his embrace, and coaxed gently, "Alright, what’s past is past. Don’t be upset, Serena."
"How can it be ’past’? You’ve already made your decision."
’He’d insisted that they had to get a divorce. What was with this gentle act now?’
’Did he really think she was some pet he could appease with a few sweet words?’
"If you don’t want to, we won’t get a divorce right now. I never said it had to be this instant."
Ethan Yardley lifted her onto his lap, held her against his chest, and patted her back, saying helplessly,
"Serena, don’t cry. You’re a grown woman now, do you still need me to comfort you?"
"Who asked you to comfort me? Let me down, I can sit by myself."
She stubbornly tried to get off his lap.
Ethan Yardley’s expression suddenly darkened. He held her tight and refused to let go. "Behave. Don’t make me angry."
Serena Yardley glanced up at the older man. Seeing how awful his expression was, she didn’t dare defy him any further.
In the end, she could only lie against his chest, feeling aggrieved.
She tried to explain what happened. "It wasn’t me who went looking for trouble with that woman. She came to..."
"What’s past is past. Let’s not talk about it."
Ethan Yardley cut her off, just wanting to hold her quietly and share a tender moment.
Serena Yardley wouldn’t let it go. "But it was that woman who came to my school and said to me..."
"Serena Yardley, I said not to bring it up again."
Ethan Yardley’s voice was cold and sharp.
Serena Yardley froze, sitting up straight and staring at him blankly.
Ethan Yardley stared back, his expression cold and grim.
"From now on, you are forbidden from seeking her out, and you are most certainly forbidden from hitting her. My divorcing you has nothing to do with her. If you’re unhappy, you can take it out on me."
Serena Yardley was speechless.
’So he really did care more about that other woman.’
Serena Yardley felt a pain in her chest, as if a knife were twisting in her heart.
She angrily moved off his lap, sat beside him, and stared out the window, not saying another word for the rest of the drive.
Ethan Yardley didn’t bother her either.
When they got home, he saw that she was unwilling to get out of the car, her cheeks puffed out in a silent rage.
He moved to pick her up.
Serena Yardley, in a fit of temper, smacked his hand away, jumped out of the car, and stormed into the house by herself.
Ethan Yardley followed helplessly behind her.
At dinner, it was just the two of them at the table. Serena Yardley didn’t say a single word the entire meal, just kept her head down and ate.
When she was finished, she went back to her room alone and pretended to read.
Ethan Yardley left her alone, went to his study to work for a while, and didn’t enter the bedroom until ten o’clock.
He took a shower and, wrapped in a towel, walked over to the bed. Seeing Serena still reading, he climbed onto the bed and took her book away.
Serena Yardley knew what he wanted.
Her eyes rimmed with red, she asked, "What do you take me for? Just a tool to ease your loneliness?"
Ethan Yardley had intended to kiss her.
After all, they hadn’t been intimate since he’d returned from his business trip.
’It had been almost twenty days.’
But hearing what she said, his desire vanished in an instant.
"Serena Yardley, how long are you going to keep this up?"
’If he didn’t cherish and spoil her, what woman in the world would dare to show him such an attitude?’
’His patience had its limits.’
His harsh tone only made Serena Yardley feel more aggrieved.
"I just want to know what I am to you! Am I your wife? If I’m your wife, then why are you divorcing me to marry someone else?"
"I don’t want to fight with you, but I’m hurting so much inside."
"Do you have any idea how much pain I’ve been in these past few days? Have you ever once considered my feelings?"
’She just couldn’t understand. If he was going to divorce her, why was he still treating her like this?’
Ethan Yardley was speechless.
Seeing that she was about to cry again, he felt a bitter pang in his heart.
He reached out a long arm, pulled her directly into his embrace, and softened his tone.
"I’m sorry. It’s my fault."
"I don’t want your apology. I just want you to stay away from other women. Don’t divorce me. Can’t we just stay together like this? Please?"
In the end, she couldn’t hold back her tears any longer.
All the pain she had been suppressing for days finally burst forth.
But as soon as she cried, Ethan Yardley felt his own heart clench with a sharp pain.
He held her tighter and soothed, "Alright. We won’t get a divorce."
Serena Yardley was taken aback. She looked up at him, her vision blurred by tears. "Really?"
"Mm."
He held her tightly, a complex mix of emotions swirling within him.
Just then, Mrs. Miller’s voice came from the bedroom door. "Mr. Yardley? Are you asleep, Mr. Yardley?"
Still holding the woman in his arms, Ethan Yardley called back toward the door, "What is it?"
"Mr. Yardley, that Miss named Sylvia Schuyler is here. She’s downstairs and says she needs to see you."
Ethan Yardley frowned, wondering what Sylvia could possibly want at this hour.
He started to get up and dress.
’Serena Yardley hadn’t expected that woman to be so shameless as to show up again. How could she have no sense of decency?’
’Of course, what made her even angrier was the man beside her.’
’The moment he heard that woman had arrived, he was already letting go of her to go downstairs.’
Serena Yardley watched the man get dressed, her eyes bloodshot. "What are you going to do about her?"
"I’ll go down and see what’s going on. You go to sleep." 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
How could Serena Yardley possibly sleep?
’She wanted to see for herself what that shameless woman was here for.’
’And just how her "wonderful" older man was going to handle it.’
...
Dressed in loungewear, Ethan Yardley cut a tall, elegant figure as he walked down the stairs, his eyes immediately landing on the woman sitting on the living room sofa.
Sylvia Schuyler saw him too.
She quickly stood and went to meet him, her face a mask of delicate vulnerability. "Ethan, did I disturb you?"
Ethan Yardley descended two more steps to stand before Sylvia Schuyler, towering over her. "It’s fine. Why are you here so late?"
"I went to bed at nine, but I had a nightmare as soon as I fell asleep. I keep dreaming about the car accident... Ethan, I’m scared. I didn’t dare stay home alone, so I came to find you."
"You don’t mind, do you, Ethan?"
’She looked up at the dashing man before her with a woeful expression, certain that as long as she mentioned the car accident, he wouldn’t push her away.’
’He owed her.’
’He was supposed to spend his entire life repaying that debt.’
"I don’t mind."
There was no expression on Ethan Yardley’s handsome face. He just glanced at Mrs. Miller and said, "Go prepare a guest room for her."
Mrs. Miller nodded and left.
Ethan Yardley walked past Sylvia Schuyler into the living room and asked with concern, "Are you hungry after coming all this way? Would you like something to eat?"
Seeing that Ethan Yardley’s attitude toward her was as gentle as ever, Sylvia Schuyler quickly walked over to him with a smile.
"I’m not hungry. I just don’t think I can sleep right now. Can we talk for a bit?"
Sylvia Schuyler sat down next to Ethan Yardley.
Ethan Yardley poured her a glass of water himself. Just as he was about to say something more, he suddenly spotted Serena Yardley standing by the staircase.
