Sir, Please Sign Here to Get a Divorce-Chapter 67: His Serena Will Never Come Back
The two drivers brought Ethan Yardley to the riverbank and pointed to a nearby rock.
"This is where we found the phone. It’s like she left it in such an obvious place on purpose."
Ethan Yardley stared at the rushing river before him, his tall frame stumbling, nearly losing its balance.
The two drivers beside him hurried to steady him. "President."
Ethan Yardley shrugged off their touch. His deep-set eyes instantly filled with tears. A lump formed in his throat, and his chest tightened until he could barely breathe.
’So my Serena jumped into the river?’
’She killed herself?’
’She’s dead?’
Ethan Yardley couldn’t believe it. Serena had left him a few last words and just... abandoned him!
’No, that can’t be.’
’She must be playing a joke on me.’
’She must be hiding somewhere nearby. She has to be.’
Ethan Yardley suddenly grabbed one of the men beside him, his voice a hoarse shout.
"Go! Make the call and get people out here to search for her! If a hundred isn’t enough, send a thousand! Ten thousand! I don’t care what it costs, you have to find her for me."
The two drivers scrambled to obey. "Yes, sir! We’ll go get people right away."
After they left, Ethan Yardley stood alone by the river, staring blankly at the dangerous currents, strong enough to sweep a person away.
He thought of the phone in his hand, of the last words Serena had left for him, and found the devastating blow unbearable.
With a thud, his knees gave out and he collapsed to the ground.
He let out a ragged breath, unable to hold back his overwhelming grief, and cried out.
"Serena! Serena Yardley..."
It was only at this moment that Ethan Yardley realized just how terribly wrong he had been.
’My Serena is only twenty years old.’
’She’s so young. She’s had no one to rely on since she was a child, no family. She was so lonely, and she needed me so much.’
’But what did I do?’
’What have I done to her?’
’She must have been unable to accept everything I, Ethan Yardley, did to her. That must be why she decided to leave me.’
’Is this her way of giving her life back to me? To sever all ties with me, Ethan Yardley, even in death?’
The thought that she was really gone, that she would never come back.
That she would never appear in his world again... Ethan Yardley felt his heart shatter into a million pieces, as if his very organs were tearing apart. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺
The pain was more than he could bear.
He threw his head back in agony, screaming on the verge of collapse, "Serena... Serena Yardley, come back! Come back!"
’I was wrong.’
’I shouldn’t have planned to marry Sylvia Schuyler.’
’I shouldn’t have hurt her again and again.’
’I really know I was wrong now.’
Ethan Yardley propped himself up with his hands on the ground, utterly devastated.
He had never known how terrified he was of losing her.
Now that he truly realized she would never return to him, he was terrified.
He knelt there, his usual proud, aloof demeanor gone for the first time. He cried his heart out, completely losing himself in his grief.
Night fell, plunging the surroundings into darkness.
There was only the sound of the flowing river and Ethan Yardley’s voice, calling Serena Yardley’s name over and over again.
But even if he shouted himself hoarse, even if he cried until he had no voice left, he couldn’t call his Serena back.
Because his Serena was determined to leave him. It didn’t matter if he admitted his mistakes, apologized, or was consumed by regret. It was all useless.
She was gone, and she would never come back in this lifetime.
’Ethan Yardley, are you satisfied now?’
’Are you satisfied, now that you’ve pushed a twenty-year-old woman to this point?’
He raised his hand and slapped himself hard across the face, as if to lessen the heart-wrenching pain in his chest.
When Yannick Young arrived, the light from his phone illuminated the President kneeling on the ground, slapping himself. He rushed over to stop him.
"I’m sorry, President. We haven’t found Miss Serena anywhere nearby."
"But I’ve already called the police and sent a lot of people to help search the mountain area. Miss Serena will be okay."
Ethan Yardley’s eyes were bloodshot, his expression tragic.
He grabbed Yannick Young, tears blurring his vision as he mumbled in a daze, "My Serena committed suicide. She’s dead."
"Yannick, was I too cruel to her? She’d rather die than stay by my side."
"She used to always ask me if I loved her. I didn’t know. But now that I’ve lost her, I realize I can’t live without her."
"I love her. I really do love her."
Suddenly like a child, Ethan Yardley cried, gripping Yannick Young’s hand, his voice choked with sobs.
"Yannick, I’m ordering you to find her for me. I want her back."
It was the first time Yannick Young had ever seen the President cry.
He didn’t know what had happened to Miss Serena, but the President’s state was proof enough that something terrible had occurred.
He quickly supported Ethan Yardley, saying, "Okay, I’ll do everything in my power to find Miss Serena."
"Serena... My Serena, come back..."
Tears streamed down Ethan Yardley’s face as he clutched his chest, where a pain like a twisting knife nearly made him pass out.
Yannick Young quickly called a few men over to help the President back to the car to rest, while he continued to lead the search along the river.
...
「The next day.」
Ethan Yardley startled awake from a dream, muttering, "Serena, Serena..."
Sylvia Schuyler, who was sitting by the bed, quickly stood up and called to him, "Ethan, Ethan, you’re awake."
Hearing Sylvia Schuyler’s voice, Ethan Yardley realized he had been dreaming.
And he was now lying in a hospital bed.
’Why am I in the hospital?’
’Where is my Serena?’
Agitated, Ethan Yardley lost control and grabbed Sylvia Schuyler, demanding, "Where’s Serena? Where’s Serena Yardley?"
The man’s grip hurt her. Sylvia Schuyler frowned, feigning the same sorrow.
"Ethan, I know this is hard for you to accept, but Serena Yardley is really dead. She left you a suicide note, remember?"
"What did you say?"
Ethan Yardley didn’t believe it was real.
Unwilling to accept that his Serena was truly dead, he quickly pulled out his phone and called Yannick Young.
The moment the call connected, Ethan Yardley roared in fury.
"Who told you to take me to the hospital?! Tell me where Serena Yardley is! Have you found her yet?!"
Yannick Young replied regretfully.
"I’m sorry, President. We dispatched over a thousand people and searched for dozens of kilometers along the river, but we haven’t found Miss Serena."
"Why can’t you find her? Even if she’s dead, there should be a body, right?"
Ethan Yardley shouted, his voice filled with desperate grief.
"Yannick Young, you listen to me! I want to see her, dead or alive! If you can’t find her, don’t even think about coming back to see me!"
He smashed his phone, got out of bed, and prepared to go search for her himself.
Sylvia Schuyler quickly grabbed him again.
"Ethan, Serena Yardley’s suicide note made it very clear. She asked you not to look for her. Even if you find her, she doesn’t want to be brought back. She wants to rest forever in the deep mountains. Can’t you just respect her wishes?"
Hearing Sylvia Schuyler’s words, Ethan Yardley coldly shoved her away.
He turned and glared at her, his face haggard, his eyes a mixture of grief and fury.
"Sylvia Schuyler, you listen to me. My Serena is not dead, and I won’t allow her to die.
And another thing, I’m going back on my word. I will never marry you in this lifetime. Serena Yardley is the only wife I, Ethan Yardley, will ever have. No one can ever take her place in my heart."
Ethan Yardley didn’t want to waste any more time here. After speaking, he dragged his heavy-hearted body and strode quickly out of the hospital room.
Left behind, Sylvia Schuyler stood there and suddenly began to laugh.
Her features twisted into a grotesque, desolate sneer.
"Is that so? But Serena Yardley is never coming back in this lifetime. Hahahaha..."
