Chapter 70: Chapter 70: His Serena Is Not Dead

After Serena Yardley woke up, Julian Thorne canceled all his work.

He stayed by her side around the clock, following the doctor’s orders to constantly stimulate her consciousness and prevent her from becoming catatonic.

Otherwise, she could suffer permanent brain damage.

Perhaps sensing Julian Thorne’s painstaking efforts, after a few days, Serena Yardley finally showed some awareness.

She could smile.

Julian Thorne was overjoyed. He continued to sit by her bed and talk to her. "Do you know who I am? Do you know what I do?"

Serena became dazed again, her eyes staring unfocused at the person before her.

’I can’t remember who he is.’

’But I feel like he’s a good person.’

Blinking, Serena shook her head.

Seeing her respond again, Julian Thorne quickly leaned closer and said, "Me? I’m your superhero. Do you know what a superhero is?"

Serena stared at him with naive, dazed confusion.

Julian Thorne continued to boast, "It means that no matter when you’re in danger, I can descend from the heavens and rescue you from any peril."

Serena seemed to understand, her eyes filled with adoration.

Julian Thorne saw that her condition was much better than it had been in the first two days after she woke up. He continued to chatter on, telling her about his past glorious achievements.

As he was talking, his phone rang.

He took it out, glanced at it, and seeing it was his sister, he answered without hesitation.

On the phone, Nina Thorne asked:

"Julian, I heard your film crew rescued a girl while shooting in the mountains a couple of days ago. Who was she?"

The search party they had sent out to find Serena Yardley had brought them this piece of news.

Thinking that her brother was part of that film crew, she had to ask if he knew anything about it.

Julian Thorne was silent. "..."

’Those disloyal bastards on the crew,’ he thought. ’I clearly warned them not to say anything, but the news still got out.’

"It’s not that I’m deliberately hiding this from you all. It’s because I want to find out the truth."

Nina Thorne was shocked. "So the person you rescued... was it really Serena?"

Julian Thorne didn’t hide it. "Yes."

"Then why didn’t you tell us when you came back that day? You knew Ethan Yardley was so sick he had to be hospitalized because Serena disappeared. Why didn’t you tell us you’d found her?"

Afraid of startling the girl beside him, Julian Thorne took his phone out to the balcony to continue the call.

"Sis, don’t you think there’s something strange about Serena’s suicide? Ethan Yardley won’t tell us anything. For all we know, he might be wishing Serena would never show up in front of him again."

Nina Thorne was stunned. "What do you mean?"

"I suspect Serena’s was not a suicide, but an attempted murder."

"Are you suspecting Ethan Yardley wanted to kill her?"

Julian Thorne didn’t deny it. "I don’t know, but my gut tells me Serena would never commit suicide.

So, until this is all figured out, I don’t want to tell Ethan Yardley that Serena is still alive and that I’ve found her."

Nina Thorne immediately pressed, "Then how is she now? Is she okay?"

Julian Thorne looked at the girl on the hospital bed, who was sitting there and staring at him blankly. His voice was a bit hoarse.

"She’s out of danger now, but she doesn’t seem to remember anything. It’s like she’s become completely naive, and she can’t quite understand what I’m saying."

"Tell me which hospital you’re at. I’ll come over and see."

Julian Thorne refused. "Sis, don’t tell Ethan Yardley that Serena is with me yet. Let’s wait until Serena gets better and see if she can remember what happened that day. Otherwise, if we tip our hand, I’m afraid someone might try to harm her again.

So don’t you come over either. I’ll bring her back when the time is right."

Feeling that her brother had a point, Nina Thorne agreed. "Okay, then you take good care of her."

After hanging up, Nina Thorne’s face was grave.

Quinn Gardner, who was beside her, asked, "Is Serena really with Julian?"

Nina Thorne looked at her husband and asked doubtfully, "Honey, do you think Ethan Yardley would have a motive to kill Serena?"

Upon hearing this, Quinn Gardner’s face fell, and he retorted coldly:

"Nina, Ethan grew up with us. Do you not know what kind of person he is?

How could you suspect that Serena Yardley’s ’death’ had anything to do with Ethan?"

Nina Thorne stated her reasoning, "Serena’s suicide note said that Ethan Yardley was the reason the person she liked died.

So, Ethan probably has feelings for Serena, but she only sees him as a brother. He couldn’t have her, so he developed the intent to kill."

Otherwise, why hasn’t he married Sylvia Schuyler after being engaged for so many years?

If he really just saw Serena as a sister, then why did he have her live with him?

All signs indicate that Ethan Yardley’s feelings for Serena Yardley are anything but ordinary.

"Even if Ethan likes Serena Yardley, he would never let love turn to hate and kill her. You really don’t know Ethan at all."

Quinn Gardner suddenly stood up and told his wife, "I’m going to the hospital to see Ethan and tell him that Serena has been found."

Nina Thorne quickly grabbed her husband. "Julian said not to tell Ethan yet, or someone else might try to harm Serena."

Quinn Gardner wouldn’t listen and insisted:

"Ethan has been lying in the hospital for days because he thinks Serena is dead. If we don’t tell him that Serena Yardley is still alive soon, I’m afraid that by the time Serena is fine, Ethan will be dead."

Thinking of the suffering his friend had endured these past few days, Quinn Gardner didn’t want to wait another moment and rushed to the hospital.

Nina Thorne was helpless and could only let him go.

When Quinn Gardner arrived at the hospital, Ethan Yardley was sitting on the hospital bed, hooked up to an IV drip.

He still looked as if his soul had been sucked out of him—pale, haggard, and staring motionlessly out the window in a daze.

Quinn Gardner stood beside him, but he didn’t react at all.

"Ethan, I have a question for you," Quinn Gardner said.

But Ethan Yardley didn’t respond.

Quinn Gardner continued, "Are you in love with Serena Yardley?"

He needed to confirm a few things.

Ethan Yardley didn’t deny it. His eyes were lifeless, his spirits crushed.

Quinn Gardner pressed on, "Because you’re in love with her, you stopped her from being with the person she liked, right?"

Ethan Yardley finally showed a flicker of a reaction.

Without sparing Quinn Gardner a glance, he replied softly with two words, "We’re married."

"What did you say?"

Quinn Gardner was stunned.

"She is my wife. Of course I had to stop her from being with someone else."

’Gabriel Galloway got what he deserved.’

’If Serena’s suicide was related to how I dealt with Gabriel Galloway, then I’ll accept the blame.’

’The only one to blame is me, Ethan Yardley, for being so useless that I couldn’t hold on to Serena’s heart, which led her affections to stray.’

’If she hadn’t fallen for someone else, why would I have come down so hard on Gabriel Galloway?’

’If I hadn’t dealt with Gabriel Galloway, maybe today’s tragedy wouldn’t have happened.’

’But it all happened. There’s no point in thinking about any of it now.’

Closing his eyes lightly, Ethan Yardley, in his anguish, said no more.

Quinn Gardner let out a sigh of relief.

’I can’t believe this old guy married Serena Yardley so long ago.’ 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢

’And he actually hid it from us.’

He was a little angry, but Quinn Gardner still didn’t want to see his friend looking half-dead.

He told him, "Eat something. Get your strength back, and I’ll take you to see Serena Yardley."

At these words, Ethan Yardley was instantly alert, looking at Quinn Gardner. "What did you say?"

"I said, I’ll take you to see Serena Yardley. Julian found her. She’s not dead."

Ethan Yardley, "..."
