’His Serena isn’t dead?’
’They found Serena?’
Overcome with excitement, Ethan Yardley grabbed Quinn Gardner and demanded, "Where is Serena? Where is she right now?"
Quinn Gardner pried his hand away with a look of distaste.
"Eat something first. You’ve barely eaten since Serena Yardley’s accident, and you’ve tormented yourself right into the hospital. You can’t even walk steadily right now. How am I supposed to take you to see her?"
"You’re not lying to me?"
Ethan Yardley struggled to compose himself.
’Serena isn’t dead. This is wonderful.’
’I can finally see Serena again.’
Ethan Yardley quickly nodded in agreement. "Okay, I’ll eat. Take me to see her as soon as I’m done."
"Mm-hmm."
There was food on the nightstand. Ethan Yardley hastily picked it up and began to wolf it down, caring nothing for his appearance.
Meanwhile, at the doorway.
Sylvia Schuyler stood rigidly, a container of food in her hand, unable to believe what she was hearing.
’Serena Yardley isn’t dead?’
’How could that be!’
’I smashed that huge rock on her head and threw her in the river. How could she possibly still be alive?’
’If she really was lucky enough to survive and reveals the truth... am I, Sylvia Schuyler, finished for life?’
’No!’
’I absolutely cannot allow Serena Yardley to remain in this world.’
At this thought, Sylvia Schuyler didn’t even enter the hospital room. She turned and scurried away in a panic.
「At another hospital.」
A doctor had just finished a comprehensive re-examination of Serena Yardley.
After the examination, he turned to Julian Thorne, who was standing beside him, and said with a sigh,
"She’s lucky to be alive, but her head injury was too severe. The fact that she can’t remember who you are is proof enough that she has amnesia. What’s more, it seems to be accompanied by a regression to a childlike state."
’Childlike?’
Julian Thorne turned to look at the girl sitting on the bed, playing with a pillow. His heart clenched for no reason.
He asked the doctor worriedly, "With her condition... can she get better?"
The doctor nodded. "She can, but it will be very difficult. The only way is for her to regain all her memories first.
"However, you must not let her be agitated in any way. If she suffers another shock, it could very well kill her."
Julian Thorne understood.
’I can’t rush things. I have to take it slow.’
After the doctor left, Julian Thorne sat back down by the bed. He gazed at Serena Yardley’s large, round, and limpid eyes, then spoke softly.
"Serena, do you really not remember me?"
Serena Yardley just looked at him and smiled.
Perhaps it was because she found him handsome, but she raised a delicate hand and gently touched his handsome face.
Julian Thorne let her touch him, his voice low as he spoke again.
"From now on, you’ll stay with me. I’ll protect you, alright?"
Serena Yardley seemed to understand, and she nodded.
Julian Thorne stood and motioned to her. "Do you want to go outside for some fresh air? I’ll help you."
"Mm-hmm. Outside... pretty."
Serena Yardley murmured softly, smiling as she nodded.
Seeing that she could still understand him, Julian thought, ’Her cognitive state might not be that severe after all.’
He reached out, helped her to her feet, and they slowly made their way outside.
But just as the two of them stepped out of the room, they encountered two men walking toward them from the end of the corridor.
A flash of annoyance crossed Julian Thorne’s face.
He was about to guide Serena Yardley back inside, but he realized she was standing still, her head tilted. With a pair of impossibly innocent and pure eyes, she stared blankly at the two men approaching.
As Ethan Yardley and Quinn Gardner stepped out of the elevator and headed for the hospital room, they came across Julian Thorne and...
Seeing Julian Thorne supporting her, Ethan Yardley froze. His feet felt as if they were filled with lead, too heavy to take another step forward.
’The person across from me... her head wrapped in white gauze, face pale, eyes unfocused, wearing such a naive expression... is that really my Serena?’
Ethan Yardley’s breath caught in his chest. He opened his mouth to call out to her, but the words were stuck in his throat, impossible to speak or swallow.
His bloodshot eyes welled up with tears once more.
’My Serena has really come back.’
’She isn’t dead.’
In a rush of emotion, Ethan Yardley nearly lunged forward.
Julian Thorne, still supporting Serena Yardley, said hurriedly, "Let’s go back inside."
Serena Yardley averted her gaze and nodded.
After ushering her back into the room, Julian Thorne instructed her, "Serena, be a good girl. Just sit here and wait for me. I’ll be right back."
"Mm-hmm."
Serena Yardley simply nodded.
Julian Thorne stepped out of the room and closed the door.
Watching the two men approach, he said, his voice full of anger, "What are you doing here? The doctor said she can’t be agitated."
"Why didn’t you tell me you’d found her?"
Ethan Yardley didn’t rush into the room. He needed to understand Serena’s condition first.
"Tell you? For what? So you can get her killed again?"
Julian Thorne retorted.
Ethan Yardley frowned, his own body still weak. He didn’t understand. "What do you mean?"
"You still don’t know what I mean? If it weren’t for you, would she be in this state?"
Ethan Yardley asked urgently, "What’s wrong with her?"
Julian Thorne was too furious to speak.
Done with the delay, Ethan Yardley insisted on going into the room.
As Julian Thorne moved to block him again, Quinn Gardner quickly grabbed him. "Serena Yardley is his wife. You have no right to interfere in their affairs."
Hearing this, Julian Thorne froze. "What did you say?"
"They registered their marriage six months ago. They’re husband and wife."
Julian Thorne was speechless.
’They’re... married?’
...
Ethan Yardley entered the room, his bloodshot eyes fixed on Serena Yardley. She was sitting on the edge of the bed with her head lowered, hugging a throw pillow, her lips pouted in a childlike, innocent expression.
’Her reaction is so strange.’
’Normally, she wouldn’t have zero reaction to seeing me.’
’Why is she like this?’
With heavy steps, Ethan Yardley walked over to Serena Yardley. He humbly crouched down in front of her, his voice choked with emotion as he looked at her.
"Serena, look at me."
Hearing his voice, Serena Yardley lifted her eyes to meet the man’s gaze.
She gave a brilliant smile and sweetly uttered a single word: "Handsome."
Ethan Yardley was speechless.
’My Serena... why has she become like this?’
’What’s wrong with her?’
Ethan Yardley suddenly grew agitated. He took her small hand in his and asked, "Serena, who am I?"
When the man in front of her grabbed her hand, Serena Yardley thought he was going to hurt her.
Suddenly terrified, her face crumpled, and she began to cry.
"SOB... SOB..."
Ethan Yardley asked again in a panic, "Serena Yardley, who am I? You don’t remember me?"
"SOB... SOB... SOB..."
Serena Yardley’s sobs grew louder. She struggled, grabbing the throw pillow she was holding and throwing it at him.
Before Ethan Yardley could speak again, Julian Thorne burst in, shoved him aside, and pulled Serena Yardley into his arms to comfort her.
"Shh, Serena, don’t cry. I’m here. I’ll protect you."
Serena Yardley immediately burrowed into Julian Thorne’s embrace, not daring to look at Ethan Yardley again.
Watching her reaction, Ethan Yardley felt as if he’d been struck by lightning.
’She has amnesia?’
’She doesn’t remember me?’
"Sob... sob... Uncle, my head hurts... Serena’s head hurts so much... sob... sob... sob..."
Suddenly, the girl nestled in Julian Thorne’s arms called out a name that shocked everyone.
The next second, she hugged Julian Thorne even tighter, murmuring under her breath.
"Uncle, Serena will be good. Please don’t abandon Serena, okay?"
