Snowstorm: I'm Super Rich in the Apocalypse-Chapter 401: Rendezvous with the Main Base
Chapter 401: Chapter 401: Rendezvous with the Main Base
The journey that was supposed to take ten days stretched into thirteen before they finally arrived at the main base.
They didn’t need to enter the main base itself; they just had to wait for the main base’s team to come out and join them for the road ahead.
They arrived at midnight, having deliberately chosen this time, and then the leaders of both bases held a meeting to determine the next steps.
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng stood outside the main base, looking at it from a distance. They had been there before and it felt familiar. A lot had happened here, but those things weren’t important to them. What mattered was that Second Uncle and Second Aunt were fine and would be transferring with them.
They weren’t sure whether Second Uncle and Second Aunt were both there and in good health, so they also wanted to hit the road as soon as possible to ask their father.
In the wee hours, they received the message to depart, and they continued on their way. They needed to reach the next city before nine o’clock in the morning when the sunlight was not yet too strong. The main base was more than a five-hour drive from the next city.
This part of the journey was relatively smooth, and it was only seven o’clock in the morning when they arrived at the next city. The air was filled with the scent of earth, a cool and comfortable morning.
After stopping the cars, Gu Pan and her group went to look for Lu Jianguo.
Upon reaching Lu Jianguo’s vehicle, they saw Second Uncle Lu Jianshe and Second Aunt Su Qing there. The two of them hurried over and called out, "Second Uncle, Second Aunt."
Upon seeing Gu Pan, Su Qing came over and gave her a big hug, "Panpan, did you miss Second Aunt?"
Gu Pan nodded, "I did. Seeing both Second Uncle and Second Aunt in good health, we can finally rest easy."
Su Qing patted Gu Pan’s hair, "That’s good, you haven’t lost weight. Knowing that you two are fine gives your Second Uncle and me some peace of mind. From now on, we won’t have to be separated again."
Lu Jianshe clapped Lu Ruisheng on the shoulder, "Good lad. Once you get to the main base, you’ll have your chance to shine."
Lu Ruisheng replied, "I really haven’t thought that much, Second Uncle." He and Gu Pan had discussed it and didn’t want to be officials or anything. They just wanted a comfortable life with some affluence.
It wasn’t a lack of ambition. It was just that, with the apocalypse upon them, they had let go of some obsessions. As long as they could safely get through it together, that would be better than anything else.
Lu Jianshe nodded in understanding, "Actually, it’s good enough to be alive."
Lu Ruisheng asked Lu Jianshe, "Are Grandpa and the others all going to Mount Everest?" There were quite a few people he needed to be prepared for.
Mentioning this made Lu Jianshe let out a heavy sigh, "Your grandfather has given up on transferring; he says he’s too old and prefers to leave the opportunity to the younger people. Your aunt Lu Lianlian and Chen Zhu are transferring together, but they are not with us. They’re on a different ticket, so we might see them again in the future."
Regarding Old Master Lu’s decision to forego the transfer, everyone wasn’t too surprised. After all, he was quite old and not really fit for such strain anymore. While Old Master Lu might not be clear on family affairs, he had a grand vision for national issues. People like him were hard to judge.
Gu Pan didn’t have a good impression of her aunt Lu Lianlian, but figured she wouldn’t have to interact much with her in the future, so it was fine.
After chatting for a while, Su Qing handed Lu Ruisheng a large bag, "This is some food and supplies that your Second Uncle and I have prepared for you. Take good care of it."
Although Gu Pan wasn’t lacking in supplies, she still accepted their kindness. She planned to repay them more in the future.
Lu Ruisheng also understood his wife’s thoughts, so he accepted the bag and expressed his thanks to Su Qing.
Since Second Uncle, Second Aunt, and Lu Jianguo were all leaders with lots of responsibilities, after a short conversation, they all went off to attend to their duties.
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng carried the bag back to their vehicle and checked what was inside.
There were rice, flour, dried meat, and a few boiled eggs. They had given Second Uncle some Breeding Eggs before, and these were probably from chickens that had hatched from them. All of these were scarce resources now.
They stored everything securely and locked the car before heading into the residential building where everyone was settling down, looking for their own people.
When Lu Xuerong saw them come in, she asked, "Did you see your relatives?" They all knew Lu Ruisheng’s Second Uncle was at the main base, so she asked this.
Lu Ruisheng nodded, "Yes, I saw them. Second Uncle and Second Aunt are both transferring."
Chen Shaonan said, "That’s good. You won’t need to be separated in the future."
Wang Ke and Zhang Manman were also there, so the rest didn’t press further on the subject. They moved on to other topics, and the conversation shifted away.
After talking for a while, they prepared to sleep. Sleeping during the day had become the new routine, as no one dared go out under the daytime sun, unsure if those who had been sunburned were at risk of developing cancer.
In the evening, after having dinner, doctors started consulting on the ground floor again. With no medication available, they could only give advice on how to alleviate symptoms through physical means, or for more serious cases, provide acupuncture or massages by traditional Chinese medicine practitioners. However, since there weren’t many traditional doctors, acupuncture wasn’t always an option for those who weren’t seriously affected.
Today, there were even more people being seen by doctors; those from No.7 Base alone far exceeded the number from yesterday and the day before. Some who had been sunburned before and felt fine now began to show problems: teary eyes, swelling, skin peeling, rashes, or even dark patches, which were particularly worrisome.
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng watched from a short distance, feeling fortunate that they had taken good measures to protect themselves from the sun. Their people were also careful, so none of them showed any symptoms.
When Feng Zhekai saw them, he quickly jogged over and called them aside to talk quietly, "It’s good that you’re here; otherwise, I’d have to go looking for you. You must remember not to get sunburned or look at the sun. The ultraviolet radiation is severe. Many of the severe cases have likely already turned cancerous, but this news is under wraps. You’re aware, and that’s enough. Just keep watch over our people and be careful."
Gu Pan quickly nodded, "I understand, don’t worry, we’ve always been cautious."
Right then, a doctor called for Feng Zhekai, and he quickly excused himself and ran back.
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng also hurried back to their own group. Since many people were strolling around outside, not everyone was present. They relayed the situational update to those with them, omitting Feng Zhekai’s details, particularly the severity of the cancer cases. This information couldn’t be shared openly; they could only remind others from time to time.
Everyone could see the solemnity on Gu Pan’s face, so they took her warnings to heart.
Soon, they were ready to set off once more. Everyone’s mood was somber after seeing the long lines of people waiting for medical consultation, knowing that many were starting to feel unwell these past couple of days. This caused anxiety among those who were not sick.
Although the number of living people was dwindling, and healthy survivors were becoming rarer, they remained incredibly cautious. There was always the possibility of a large organization causing unrest or taking hostages, so it was wise to be vigilant.
The night roads remained challenging to navigate, and the moonlight wasn’t as bright as before, making them slow down even more.
This environment only heightened everyone’s anxiety, but there was no other choice.
