Special Forces Medic-Chapter 719 - 686: Bullets Have No Eyes
Ji Weihua, Director of the Criminal Investigation Department at the North District Police Station, was transferred here at the age of thirty after solving a major serial murder case. He became a department-level official at thirty-three and is currently a candidate for the position of Police Chief at the North District Police Station, competing against other outstanding officials from various districts as one of the favored candidates.
The name Xiao Lin suddenly popped into Xu Ming's head alongside the high-ranking figures in the North District, just as he was about to take significant action. He wondered how Hua Qingyi had managed to acquire the information on Xiao Lin by his side.
The comprehensive information all fed into his suspicion that maybe these things had been there all along, waiting to surface when needed.
Yet it seemed unlikely. Xiao Lin was becoming increasingly enigmatic to him, and when he asked Master Shuai about him, he merely shook his head, offering little beyond recognizing him as the military doctor of Dragon Soul.
Under Xu Ming's unobtrusive scrutiny, Ji Weihua felt very uneasy, as if he were cheese eyed by a mouse. Those small eyes emitted a strange light. He snorted coldly as he walked through the armed detectives, standing squarely in front of Xu Ming. "North District Police Station Chief? Do you have credentials?"
"Xu Ming, just transferred to the North District." Credentials are customary; the sudden transfer order for Xu Ming to the North District Police Station had reached the district government but had not yet been communicated to the police station. Normally, it should be directly issued to the station, but with Han Fei dead and a new chief yet to be appointed, it was temporarily delayed.
"I haven't received any notification of such a transfer. Please produce credentials first." Ji Weihua didn't care who this newcomer might be; even if he was the Chief of the North District Police Station, it was of no consequence.
"Alright." Xu Ming pulled credentials and the transfer order issued by the city council from his bag, specifically prepared for him by Hua Qingyi to deal with tricky individuals—perfect for the current situation.
The city council's seal was formally stamped on the signature at the lower right corner. Ji Weihua glanced at the name of the signer, then briefly looked up at Xu Ming. "Officer Xu, shouldn't you be patrolling your designated area, instead of being here? What is this about?"
"I received a report; there's a hidden corpse here, so I came to take a look." Xu Ming carefully folded the order and put it back in his bag. "I don't think I've done anything inappropriate unless Beigong is a special area we're not allowed to intervene?"
"Is Officer Xu preparing to wrap things up now? Has the corpse been found?" Ji Weihua detected Xu Ming's implied meaning, scanning the surroundings, which were yet devoid of guests. "I received complaints stating your team was quite rude during the investigation. Has there been such a case?"
"There's just one last place to check; everything else is almost covered."
"Which means, as of now, no corpse has been found, correct?" 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶
"Correct."
"Officer Xu, where did your information come from?"
"Regardless of where the information came from, isn't our first duty to verify it?" Xu Ming understood that if he followed Ji Weihua's line of questioning, he would inevitably fall into his interrogative trap, eventually winding up stuck in a pit. "We cannot rule out those who make mischief. I believe Beigong is a relatively high-end location; if nothing is found today, the owner should consider who they possibly offended, as such pranks are quite ominous."
Ji Weihua had already ordered his men to put away their guns. "Officer Xu, if no hidden corpse is found, pack it up; you're obstructing the owner's normal business operations."
"Director Ji, my apologies, the work is still incomplete. I don't perceive myself as obstructing anything, and in fact, Beigong can operate without disturbance. I've got my sight on the matter, not affecting operations inside."
"Officer Xu, this place is so small; where do you think anything could be hidden, let alone a person? Even a mouse scuttling through would be noticed." Yan Fengying chimed in from the side but was silenced by a glare from Ji Weihua.
"Hmm, indeed, the odds of a corpse being hidden here are slim, but there's one spot that's not entirely certain." Xu Ming feigned a look around before nodding. "If Director Ji has no further inquiries, I'd like to begin our work. Let's not impede Beigong's normal operations!"
Ji Weihua had guessed what Xu Ming intended to do. He frowned.
Xu Ming was not wrong; he was executing official duties, and further hindrance would imply undue actions. "Officer Xu, you've just arrived in the North District; you're unfamiliar with the terrain. Let us handle the rest."
"Director Ji, that doesn't follow protocol." Xu Ming shook his head, intuitively feeling Ji Weihua intended to stop further investigation. "Men, start working, the target is that deep trench."
As expected, just as he had considered, Master Shuai, upon receiving Xu Ming's orders, led a group toward the trench.
"Halt, nobody is allowed to touch the historical relic." Ji Weihua suddenly raised his voice, lightly waving his right hand. His men had already targeted Master Shuai and his group; any reckless movement would mean riddling them with bullet holes. "Officer Xu, this trench is a legacy of the North District, derived from historical evolution, with a tradition older than any of us combined here. This kind of excavation is destructive, and I cannot allow you to proceed."
"Heh, what does Director Ji mean by this?" Xu Ming motioned, and Master Shuai swiftly kicked two people aside and slipped off his backpack, pulling out folding shovels and hooks, tossing some to his men, leaving one to handle those Ji Weihua brought over.
A shot rang out, sparking on the side of the stone bridge from an unknown person. Master Shuai halted his actions, staring at Xu Ming. The gunfire immediately plunged both parties into a standoff, while Yan Fengying was startled by the real live bullet gunfire, crying aloud. If someone died here, it'd indeed be disastrous.
"Director Ji, bullets are blind. Even hitting a person could lead to a hole at least, and we are conducting an investigation. Your men's actions here, I can't comprehend what they're trying to convey." Xu Ming retracted his amicable demeanor. "Or, do you mean there is something we should investigate at Beigong?"
"Officer Xu, I'd advise taking this chance to call it quits. Considering you're new here, unfamiliar with the circumstances. Ending this sweep might ease everybody's concerns; wouldn't you agree?" Ji Weihua was equally shocked by the gunshot but was aware of the person who fired it; however, under such circumstances, (to be continued.
