Chapter 14: First hunt(1)

Six hours. Two hundred Soul Points.

When he crushed that single Nightmare, he had gained only five. At that rate, he would need to destroy at least forty of them.

Was he uncertain?

No.

If that was what it took to save his brother, then he would crush forty. Or fifty. Or however many stood in his way.

Still, he had to be cautious. He could not activate the skill recklessly. The sensors would detect the surge, and the moment they realized he could use Genesis, everything would spiral.

Authorities. Questions. Interrogations.

He did not have time for any of that.

Time was a blade at his throat.

The first thing he did was choose a weapon.

He initially considered his bow, but he did not have enough arrows to hunt multiple Nightmares. So instead, he grabbed a steel rod and his slightly cracked baseball bat.

He shoved them into his bag, pulled on a face mask, and wore a hoodie. Standing before the mirror, he examined himself. Most of his face was concealed, and the clothes allowed easy movement.

This feels unreal.

He looked like a secret agent from some fiction novel, stepping into the night to fight monsters in silence.

Shaking his head, he left the house.

Where was he going?

He did not know.

But first, he made sure to put distance between himself and his home. If anyone investigated later, he wanted the trail blurred.

Truth be told, Kyle had no idea how long he could keep his awakened identity hidden.

System, he called inwardly. Can I search for cameras using God’s Eye?

[Of course, host.]

Kyle blinked. The skill truly seemed absurd in scope.

In that case... can you give me a brief description of it?

He had been too overwhelmed when he first received the gift to properly study it.

A large translucent system window materialized before his eyes.

[Innate Skill: God’s Eye]

[Rank: SSS]

[Level: 1]

[Description: The blessing of the King of Gods. This skill allows the host to pierce through any trap, illusion, or obstruction. No spell or skill is exempt. The skill may also appraise a person or object. However, depending on the complexity of the target, appraisal may fail at the current level.]

[Capabilities at current level:]

1. Appraise living and non-living entities

2. Pierce through flesh to identify structural weak points

3. Scan a designated area for specific energy signatures, such as electrical or magical energy

4. Perceive the world at ten times slower speed

[Duration: 20 minutes per activation.]

[Cooldown: After usage, the host must rest their eyes for five hours before reactivation.]

[Note: Duration does not increase through Level Up. It increases through accumulated usage.]

[To increase maximum duration by 5 minutes, the host must accumulate 60 minutes of active usage.]

[Remaining duration: 16 minutes 12 seconds.]

Kyle nearly stopped in his tracks as his eyes moved to the bottom of the panel.

’Wait... so I can only use the God’s Eye for sixteen minutes today?’

[Indeed, host. That duration has been calculated with your safety in consideration.]

Kyle frowned. ’Doesn’t that mean I only have sixteen minutes to hunt more than forty Nightmares?’

[Indeed, host. However, the Host must remember that only five hours of rest are required before reset, while the quest time expires in five hours and forty-nine minutes.]

’You say it as if hunting those things doesn’t take time.’ He clicked his tongue.

This was not as simple as he had assumed. Not easy, never easy. But he had believed God’s Eye would at least make things efficient.

Instead, he was racing a clock.

’You mentioned crowded places have a higher number of NightWalkers. That means the sensors are less likely to isolate my presence too, right?’

[Indeed, host. However, host, please remain wary of the other NightWalkers.]

Kyle nodded. ’I understand.’

He made his way toward the railway station, probably the most crowded place even at this hour.

People passed by without sparing him a glance. Some were returning from work, shoulders slumped and eyes tired. Others staggered slightly, laughter loose, the scent of alcohol clinging to them.

Kyle quietly slipped into the alley beside the station.

He knew this place well. If someone tried to ambush him, he already had three escape routes mapped in his head.

After placing his bag beside a garbage trolley, he activated God’s Eye.

’Check if there are any surveillance cameras.’

Instantly, his vision shifted.

The walls dissolved. The dustbin vanished. Even the street seemed to fade from existence. In their place, faint lines of energy and wiring patterns revealed themselves like veins beneath skin.

He turned slightly and spotted thin electrical wiring running along the wall, feeding the small bulb hanging above him.

’This is insane...’

He did not linger in awe. He could already sense faint distortions in the air. Nightmares were gathering.

Sweeping his gaze farther, he located a single surveillance camera positioned at the mouth of the alley, roughly two hundred meters away.

Perfect.

’Switch to normal mode.’ He would give the modes proper names later, but thankfully, the system understood.

His vision snapped back.

The alley returned. The walls. The stench. The flickering light.

And the incoming horde.

They emerged from the shadows like rot made flesh.

Some were short, hunched and twitching. Some were unnaturally tall, their limbs dragging. A few had no arms at all. Others had too many, joints bending in the wrong directions. Some groaned low and guttural. Others chortled in broken, manic bursts.

All of them had the same intent.

To tear him apart.

Kyle pulled the steel rod from his bag and stepped forward, tightening his grip.

’Fuck it, we ball.’
