Chapter 31: Privately

Leaving the café side by side, Kyle asked the woman beside him, "I was thinking of hunting a few nightmares tonight. What spot should I pick?"

He believed that no matter how much he wanted to, he couldn’t go completely off the grid while using Genesis. So why not ask the one person most likely to be monitoring the entire city?

Veronica paused for a moment before asking, "Why...are you so insistent on hunting nightmares?"

Kyle shrugged. "Just...no reason."

He didn’t know how much he could reveal to her. He wasn’t even sure if she knew that he had experienced an unnatural awakening a few days ago and wanted to test his powers. Not to mention, letting her know about Ethara and the reward she had offered was definitely not an option.

Veronica simply stared at him for a few seconds before speaking again. "Do you want me...to accompany you?"

Kyle hummed in surprise. "Are you sure about that? Don’t you have work to handle?"

Veronica didn’t respond to that since what he said was true.

Even today, the few hours she had spared to spend with Kyle would cost her dearly. She had not only left her position as Commander but had also manipulated the surveillance systems to make sure she wasn’t caught meeting him.

"Kyle," she turned toward him, her voice soft, "can I ask for a favor?"

Kyle looked at her and nodded. "In exchange for all the information you’ve provided, yeah, sure. A small favor can be heard."

Veronica sighed. "Well, the next time...can we meet a little more privately? Like your room?"

Kyle gave a wry smile. "Aren’t you moving a little too fast?"

Veronica let out a dry chuckle, already expecting that response before she replied, "My face is well known across the nation. If I’m seen wandering around here with a guy who has nothing to do with the aether world...well, in their eyes, that would be enough reason to start watching you much more closely."

Kyle was no longer joking. Her words made him realize the gravity of the situation and the significance of her role in the organization.

Recently, an officer had already suspected his involvement with the aether world. If it was suddenly discovered that Veronica was meeting him, he could easily imagine the kind of trouble that would follow.

After a brief pause, he nodded. "Alright...but you have to inform me beforehand. And you can’t dress like this either. Wear a hoodie or something."

Veronica grinned. "Why? A beautiful woman knocking on a young man’s door would cause rumors?"

Kyle shook his head. "Yeah, and I don’t want rumors," he admitted.

She was an attention magnet without even trying.

Maybe it was her hair, or the way she carried herself. Kyle could already imagine the kind of gossip his neighbors would spread if they saw such a beauty visiting him often.

Veronica hummed softly. "Well, I was planning to be discreet about these meetings in the first place, so there’s no need to worry."

If she were to walk openly to his door, then what would be the point of meeting privately?

She wasn’t going to ruin his peace or the secret relationship they had formed. No exceptions.

Not long after, they went their separate ways. Veronica headed back to headquarters while Kyle made his way toward Fortis.

It was close to sunset.

Taking out his phone, he checked the time. It was almost five, which meant he needed to return home by eight for the live streaming.

He walked to the train station and bought a ticket to the most visited place in the state.

Fortis was not only the center of tourism but also home to many major hospitals, schools, and government institutions.

But if Kyle were asked whether he wanted to live there, he would shake his head in denial.

He didn’t like crowded places much. He had never been the type to visit clubs or hang out with friends after classes. It had always been just him and his computer. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

He had been quite an introvert since childhood, not out of personal preference, but because of his schedule and his parents’ caution toward strangers.

’System,’ as he took an empty seat on the train, he asked, ’is there a way for me to...you know, use Genesis without accessing God’s Eye?’

[The host needs to understand a few things about Genesis first. Natural awakening allows a person to develop a core and circuits at an age when the human body is still growing, allowing it to adapt much faster. However, the host has already matured, so God’s Eye temporarily awakens Genesis within the host, acting as a link between the host’s usual state and the unnaturally awakened state. That link gradually pulls the two states closer together, but at a slow pace, as the host’s body would not be able to withstand the shock of accepting something entirely new all at once.]

The explanation was clear and concise. Kyle hummed in understanding.

He knew that awakening was a process that changed many things within the human body and often left people bedridden for weeks.

Genesis erupted so vividly during awakening that there was no way the sensors could fail to detect its presence.

However, Kyle’s situation was different.

[God’s Eye is a very powerful skill, something that could only be used by a strong Nightwalker who has honed their abilities for years. However, the host has only just been introduced to this new side of the world, so please allow yourself some time.]

Kyle nodded in understanding.

Closing his eyes, he asked casually, ’I concur that God’s Eye is an overpowered ability, but how come I haven’t damaged myself using it so...irresponsibly?’

There was no immediate response this time. In fact, even after a full minute had passed, the system remained silent.

Kyle tilted his head in confusion but said nothing more as the train had already reached his station.
