Strange Life of a Cat-Chapter 233 - 226 Enemies on a Narrow Road
Chapter 233: Chapter 226: Enemies on a Narrow Road
Chapter 233 -226: Enemies on a Narrow Road
Zheng Tan was surprised to see this person at the Night Building. The consumption at the “East Palace” wasn’t a small amount; could it be that this person really wasn’t short of money?
These days, scammers lived more luxuriously than most white-collar workers who toiled in offices—driving luxury cars, accompanying high-quality ladies, and frequenting high-expense venues. Even Zheng Tan had to acknowledge the disparity.
The man hadn’t noticed Zheng Tan’s gaze—perhaps, even if he had noticed, in the place below he was already accustomed to attracting a lot of attention.
In fact, from the lighting and angle, it was not easy for the people below to see up into the private rooms. Even if they could, Zheng Tan wasn’t concerned; he wasn’t afraid of being seen. Right now, compared to the music he didn’t enjoy, Zheng Tan was more curious about the scammer’s true identity.
The performance at the East Palace ended around 10:30 p.m. Some people would leave, while for others, their nightlife was just beginning. They would remain active until around two or three in the morning. Wei Leng, a family man, wouldn’t stay long and was ready to leave with his wife. Zheng Tan would definitely go with them; otherwise, it would be awkward for him to go back alone.
In the parking lot, Wei Leng initially didn’t close the windows tightly when driving. After staying in the Night Building for a while, breathing in some fresh air also helped clear his mind.
With many cars around the Night Building now, it would take some time to get onto the main road. Zheng Tan stood up, looking out from the half-open back window. He scanned the surroundings, his gaze landing on a car not far in front.
Zheng Tan didn’t notice what brand the car was, nor could he remember the models of some brands, but he was sure that car wasn’t cheap either. Unlike the luxury sports car that Senior Hetao and the others were looking for, this car was more business-like and steadier, better fitting the identity the scammer currently assumed.
Zheng Tan didn’t expect that catching a ride with Wei Leng for a distraction would result in encountering that “Advanced Scammer” twice. Talk about a narrow path for enemies, which was a bit too much since there was no real enmity.
At this moment, Zheng Tan’s Advanced Scammer was gentlemanly opening the car door for a voluptuous lady, then, after shutting it, he walked over to the driver’s side and was about to open the door when he paused, looking slowly over at a passing car.
The neon lights and street lamps outside the Night Building were all on, and the angle of the light was just right to shine on Zheng Tan’s head poking out of the half-open car window. With the brightness of the lights outside the Night Building, anyone without a vision problem could see the cat’s head at the window clearly.
One moment imagining the upcoming fun, and the next, someone cursed as they wished they could smash the steering wheel, carefully looking again toward the slowly passing car’s rear window. Damn it! It was really weird!
Zheng Tan couldn’t see the man’s expression; the reflection from his glasses hid his eyes. However, Zheng Tan noticed a brief stiffness in the man when he looked towards him, as if he had seen something impossible, but the man quickly concealed it, making it seem like that fleeting stiffness was just an illusion under the neon lights.
After leaving the Night Building’s parking lot and picking up speed, Zheng Tan looked back but didn’t see the man’s car.
Even though he had encountered that man twice tonight, Zheng Tan didn’t think there would be any intersection with the scammer, assuming the scammer wouldn’t con his way to the Jiao family.
Back in the courtyard, Zheng Tan’s life continued at its usual pace, doing what he needed to do, unaffected by the scammer.
As spring brought warmth and the birds became more active, so did the insects. Yet, not only birds were active around the courtyard; cats were too.
The sheriff and Ah Huang saw some hopping insects on the ground, as excited as Er Tong when he sees his favorite excrement.
Da Pang, sent out by his granny for some exercise, probably wanted to find a quiet, undisturbed place to sleep, so he climbed up the nearest crabapple tree, and thus, Zheng Tan witnessed the scene of “a Calico pressing down on a crabapple tree.”
This crabapple tree didn’t look very sturdy to Zheng Tan. A long time ago, there used to be a path here with crabapple trees planted on both sides, but they were mostly removed during school construction, leaving only a few. Over the years, the only surviving one was now being squashed by the bulky Da Pang, Zheng Tan noting that the branches looked about to break.
Indeed, cats were a significant menace to plants. Where cats frequently roamed, plants had to endure bites, scratches, and pressure.
After watching the sheriff and others eat several unidentified insects in the courtyard, Zheng Tan ran out for a walk. A splendid time indeed needed a stroll to feel completely fulfilled for the day.
After passing the Affiliated Hospital, Zheng Tan walked along the garden beds and walls on the edge of the street. It was quieter near the hospital. While there was a commercial street, it was somewhat far from here and not in line with the hospital; one had to turn in between.
Zheng Tan didn’t turn but continued straight along this street. According to the map, there was a lake ahead, a sizable lake with some developed properties around it. Er Mao had mentioned that his great aunt lived in a house by the lake, though he didn’t know which one since there were more than a couple of lakes in Chuhua City.
Zheng Tan had little interest in finding Er Mao’s great aunt, as the old lady was too difficult to attend to, and he had no mood for a visit.
Walking past a large hotel and some surrounding small shops, Zheng Tan then saw a residential area marked on the map. He jumped onto a large sycamore tree by the roadside for a better view—part of the residential area consisted of small villas, while the other part comprised tall apartment buildings. Supposedly some professors from Chuhua University had bought homes here, close to the school and in a quiet environment.
Once, Zheng Tan had heard Mr. Jiao mentioning that he was interested in buying a house around here. A colleague of his had bought a house here but, due to a job transfer, planned to sell it. Mr. Jiao had checked it out and felt that the neighbors weren’t great, so he didn’t buy it.
However, Zheng Tan was actually glad that Mr. Jiao didn’t buy it, as he preferred the East District courtyard. To Zheng Tan, the size of the living place didn’t matter much, what was important was the play area and playmates.
Climbing over the nearby wall, Zheng Tan walked along some small paths inside. The greenery here was indeed nice. No wonder Mr. Jiao had considered this place, having heard that a professor expert in landscape design was consulted in the past. Naturally, the landscaping was quite professional.
A small Pekingese barked in its yard, barking furiously after seeing Zheng Tan. Unfortunately, it couldn’t get out, and Zheng Tan ignored it, still interested in observing the houses and their layout.
This residential area had been built for a few years now, with lush foliage on the trees. Zheng Tan saw a few cats playing around. When they saw Zheng Tan, the cats didn’t show much hostility, just a mix of alertness and curiosity, seemingly surprised by this suddenly appearing stranger.
Since the other party showed no hostility, Zheng Tan had no intention of fighting for territory. To each their own.
The residential area by the lake had tall fences built not far from the lake. Outside the fence was a road that could accommodate two cars at the same time. Beyond the road was a green belt, and then the lake. The lake shores were littered with various warning signs and railings, as quite a few incidents had occurred in this area.
After leaving the residential area and walking along the road by the lake, Zheng Tan jumped onto a tree and looked around to get his bearings.
Unexpectedly, this look actually allowed Zheng Tan to spot something interesting.
It was a luxury car, quite familiar. Zheng Tan wasn’t sure if it was the same one he had seen at the Night Building, so he jumped down from the tree and crossed the fence towards it.
The car was parked in a villa community area. In fact, these villas looked quite similar, except for a few homes whose owners had obviously invested heavily in their decoration. After glancing at the villa’s number, Zheng Tan perked up his ears to listen to the noises inside.
There were voices inside, a conversation between two people, one of whom was an “Advanced Scammer” in Zheng Tan’s eyes, and the other was the old lady he had seen at the hospital. They seemed to be conversing in a quite relaxed atmosphere, Zheng Tan heard the old lady laughing.
So, the old lady lived here.
The front door was closed, but a window next to it was open. Zheng Tan listened to the conversation inside. It was about a company colleague who had an accident, so the “Advanced Scammer” took the colleague to the hospital for a check-up and then brought her back home. This colleague was quite a beauty. The scene was observed by the old lady, who was out for a walk and recognized the person, thus inviting him to her house for a tea.
As they chatted, he started sharing his life struggles. Zheng Tan felt goosebumps all over as he listened. This man crafted himself as the so-called “neighbor’s child”: born in poverty, achieving excellent grades through hard work, bravery, capabilities, eventually joining a big company, gaining the boss’s favor, and becoming a society elite. Along the way, he would mix in tales of his struggles, making the old lady view him even more kindly.
Zheng Tan thought to himself, “What a load of bull!” Who was that pretentious rich kid playing the fool on the mountain back then?
That man didn’t talk just about his successful career, it was now time to share his love life, hence he started talking about the female colleague he brought over today.
The more Zheng Tan listened, the more inappropriate it seemed. This man’s ability to fabricate stories was incredibly refined. If it weren’t for having seen another facet of him, Zheng Tan would probably have been deceived just like the old lady. Speaking of which, Zheng Tan was quite curious if this guy also feigned a shy demeanor when spinning these tales. Could such thick-skinned person really act shy?
Thinking it over, Zheng Tan jumped onto the windowsill to look inside.
And indeed, the man was smiling with a tinge of shyness, which reminded the old lady of her past experiences.
“Back in my day…” the old lady was about to share stories of her past experiences to encourage this young man in front of her, but unexpectedly, when she slightly turned her head towards the window, she saw the Black Cat standing on the windowsill.
“Oh, isn’t this the one?!” The old lady’s attention immediately shifted, and she called on her housekeeper to see if there was any suitable food to give to the cat.

The so-called scammer, sitting in an armchair with a cup of tea pretending to listen, couldn’t help but twitch his face, although he didn’t show the turmoil inside, inwardly, he was cursing the entire alpaca group.
Damn it!
He had just managed to engage the old lady in conversation, about to get her to divulge some information, only to be disrupted by this Black Cat!
