Maddison watched Azrael closely as he retreated into his own mind once again.

Maddison wanted to ask Azrael what he was thinking about, but she felt like he was only going to push her away again if she did that.

It was obvious that Azrael still didn't fully trust her.

He was willing to allow her to know the things he was doing, but he was never completely open with her. Azrael held his cards so close to his chest that Maddison could never get through them.

Finally, after a while, Maddison felt her curiosity get the better of her, and she asked.

"Why do you want to know about Harold Sabastine?"

Maddison watched Azrael as he glanced at her for a moment.

Azrael had this dangerous glint in his eyes, like a predator sharpening its fangs.

Maddison knew that look.

She had seen it on his face once before, back when she told him about the investigator, Romanov.

At that moment, Maddison was able to immediately decipher what it was that Azrael was planning.

"You want to kill him?"

Maddison's tone was one of disbelief.

She couldn't wrap her head around the fact that Azrael was already planning another one of his murders.

Maddison didn't understand it.

Azrael was such an anomaly, and the things he did seemed so random that she couldn't help but be curious.

Maddison understood why Azrael killed Romanov. Romanov was going to be used as an interpreter to further the investigation, so it was understandable that he would kill her.

But why did Azrael kill Francis in the first place? What could have possibly made Azrael so bloodthirsty that he would kill three of his classmates?

And now, why was Azrael planning to kill another person?

Maddison honestly expected Azrael to calm down for a while.

The news of Romanov's death was still fresh in the media, and they were searching for the Black Mask killer every day.

If Azrael planned another death so close to the previous one, then it would only make it easier for the police to track him down.

It was almost like Azrael wasn't just killing these demigods because of some bloodthirst that he wanted to quench. There was something else forcing Azrael's hand.

He was killing them for some other reason.

It was a testament to how twisted Maddison's personality was that she found it weirder for Azrael to be killing people for a purpose rather than killing them just because he wanted to.

Maddison had a lot of anger inside of her that was being pushed down by her mellow personality, and every time she heard that Azrael killed another demigod or human on the news, there was a small vindictiveness that surged out from the same place that anger had been hiding.

Maddison simply wanted to hurt someone to satisfy her anger, and she saw Azrael's actions as him hurting people for both of them.

Maddison didn't know that by doing this, she was simply pushing the responsibility for everything onto Azrael and avoiding dirtying her own hands.

Azrael recognized the one-sidedness of their relationship, and that was one of the reasons why he was not allowing Maddison to get as close to him as she wanted to.

Azrael knew that things could flip at any moment.

If the police ever managed to catch him, then he would face all of the consequences on his own since he was the only one who had committed any serious crime.

But Maddison still wasn't aware of her shortcomings, and so she felt justified in asking Azrael:

"Why are you killing so many people? I don't understand. What are you trying to achieve by killing them? Is it just... pleasure-?"

Maddison felt her words fail her once she saw the hard look that Azrael gave her when she mentioned pleasure.

There was no amusement to be found on Azrael's face.

He was pissed.

"Don't you ever say something like that again. Do you understand?"

Maddison nodded slowly as she realized that her assumption was completely wrong.

Azrael was not doing this for the fun of it at all.

Azrael's reaction made Maddison know that there was definitely a reason for him doing all this.

But that still left the question of 'why' in Maddison's heart, and Maddison had to summon her courage once more and she asked.

"So then... why? I can understand why you had to get rid of Romanov, but Harold Sabastine hasn't done anything to you. You didn't even know who he was until I mentioned him."

Maddison's curiosity was getting on Azrael's nerves.

Azrael wasn't going to tell Maddison about the gift he received from Thanatos. That was something he was never going to mention to anyone since he didn't think he could trust anyone that much.

Azrael said nothing for a long while, simply staring at Maddison intensely.

Maddison looked like she was ready to leave the table and head back to class with how tense the situation had gotten, but there was no hiding the curious glint in her eyes that told Azrael she was not going to just drop the subject.

Finally, Azrael decided to give Maddison something that would shape her outlook on the world for the rest of her life.

"There's a reason why daemons and demigods are both referred to as 'Divine Beings'."

Azrael stood as the bell signifying the end of lunch rang, and he watched Maddison frown into empty space with a slightly lost look in her eyes.

Azrael knew that Maddison would come to understand what he meant eventually. She was a very smart girl after all.

It was up to her to decide if she was capable of walking the same path he had chosen to walk after she figured things out on her own.

Azrael headed back to class, and just like always, he only halfheartedly listened to the various arithmetic equations that the teacher was writing on the board and explaining.

Azrael wouldn't say that he was the smartest person in the room, but that didn't mean that he was dumb either.

He could already understand most of what the teacher was saying, and after reading his notes and watching the recording only once, he was sure to figure out the rest.

Besides, the likelihood of them needing arithmetic in the Null Zone was very low.

The demigods were only going to be taught regular academic topics in their first year, and it was mainly because many of the demigods here were never going to become strong enough to enter the Null Zone at all.

These weaker demigods were going to stay in the mortal plane and fight against the daemons that leak from the void, and some of them might even end up taking normal jobs after they've fought for a while – like most of the teachers in Divine Academy.

Azrael had no intention of staying in the mortal plane for longer than necessary.

The minimum required rank for moving through the veil was S rank in both the Mortal Body and your God Aspect, but that was just something humans came up with to ensure that the people who went in survived against the monsters they would meet there.

Theoretically, a demigod could move through the veil at any level they wanted, so long as they had Divine Essence in their Divine Core.

But someone like Azrael, who was believed to be without a God Aspect, was going to find it hard to convince anyone to let him through.

The world over on that side represented freedom to Azrael. It was a whole new world where he could start over without having to worry about the laws of humanity and the morals that had been impacted upon him.

The only thing that mattered over in the Null Zone was power and what you were willing to do to get a hold of that power.

And the only thing standing between Azrael and that freedom was his own weakness.
