Chapter 76: Oh, you can read

Zandrel gave him more food from his own plate, but after that, he didnโ€™t let him drink more alcohol, saying with that amount of food he ate, the alcohol wouldnโ€™t be good for him.

Riven didnโ€™t mind much as he got his stomach filled and then finally he sighed. "I am okay now!" he declared. ๐™›๐’“๐’†๐™š๐’˜๐’†๐“ซ๐™ฃ๐“ธ๐™ซ๐“ฎ๐’.๐’„๐’๐“ถ

Kivara scowled. "You should be. You ate more than half the table, and where are you storing it in that slim body of yours?"

Zandrel patted the air. "Now, now. You should know that after one uses a lot of energy like Riven did today, then itโ€™s normal for one to be hungry as if they were starving."

He turned to Riven. "And honestly, the amount of power you used today was insane. You just kept going! I really thought it was finished for you when you ran away, but who would have thought that you hid your summon in the head of that monster?

"Putting them directly in the middle of the enemy. No way they could stand a chance against that. Really well thought of by you!"

Riven shrugged as if he wasnโ€™t pleased, but really, he was extremely happy that the plan went according to how he wanted it to in his head.

"...thank you, big guy, for trying to eat me... if not for you, I wouldnโ€™t have thought of that method..."

Eventually, after that, Riven left Zandrelโ€™s residence together with Kivara. They walked together under the gentle moon without speaking until they reached where they would go their different ways.

Somehow, Riven felt something he couldnโ€™t put his hand on between them. It felt like a vibration that he didnโ€™t know. He had felt it when they first reached the Green Clouds Sect. It was as if she wore a mask, but tonight it was even more pronounced.

She watched him with eyes of black and gold, and for an instant, Riven saw the mask slip from her face. She shook her head. "Be careful."

Before he could ask her anything, she was gone, leaving Riven frowning behind her. Then he suddenly felt a presence behind him, and he whirled, his body tensed as he crouched. "What...?"

There was no one there, but Riven could have sworn he felt someone behind him. The hair at the back of his head raised. "Nobody can get into Master Zandrelโ€™s place just like that. There are formations all around."

Even then, he hurried back to his own building, looking around sharply till he was inside. He locked the door and sat down on his chair, sighing.

The victorious feeling that enveloped him before was evaporating fast. "Just what was that?" he muttered to himself.

He went to the small room that connected to the single room and had his bath before he crawled into bed. "Iโ€™m so tired."

Everything he had done that day seemed to melt into his body, and he was asleep before he even knew what was happening. His dream was a bit peaceful until something woke him.

An instinct made his body jerk awake, and before he even opened his eyes, he had rolled away and Shaped his sword. He raised it and turned towards the intruder, his eyes shining brightly. "Who are... oh... Master Zandrel."

But even then, he didnโ€™t lower his sword. After all, he didnโ€™t know why he would come to him at night. Naturally, Riven was a suspicious person. Anything out of the ordinary was enough to make him twitch.

Zandrel raised his hands. "Calm down. Iโ€™m only here to talk to you. I wanted you to have a little rest before. Thatโ€™s why I didnโ€™t bring it up."

Riven relaxed, especially when the man brought out a bottle he had hidden and then poured two cups. He sat on one of the chairs and pointed to the other one. "Sit."

Riven sat. He let go of the sword, and it dissolved.

"What is it you want to talk about, Master Zandrel?"

Zandrel produced a paper with some words written on it and pushed it to Riven. "You can imprint your name at the end there. This is the contract for our Master-Student relationship."

Riven relaxed even further when he understood what Zandrel was there for. "...finally... with Zandrelโ€™s guidance and the technique book combined with the resources from the sect, I should quickly reach rank three..."

He took the papers and began to read them. At first, his face showed confusion, and then a hint of anger appeared on Rivenโ€™s face before his face finally shut down, turning smooth. He finished reading the paper and then he looked up at Master Zandrel.

Zandrelโ€™s eyes were like white stones scorched by the desertโ€™s sands. And that night, they were shining. He raised his brows and sounded disappointed when he said, "Oh. You can read."

"Yes. My sister taught me how to. It was taught to her by my mother, and now I am glad they did." Rivenโ€™s body tensed, and he began to form the foundation of the grave in his mind. He raised the paper. "This paper is a contract that states that I have willingly turned myself over to you as your slave. And this is a formation paper. When my blood imprints on it, then it becomes binding."

Zandrel seemed surprised, but he was smiling faintly. "I see. You are actually quite not how I predicted things to go. You are a villager, you know, a barbaric fool. It should have gone so easy. But surprise, surprise! He can read!"

Rivenโ€™s gut twisted. There wasnโ€™t even a hint of the brotherly smile on Zandrelโ€™s face. He began to get ready for a fight that he knew was hopeless. Just how did he find himself here? Kivara, right. Kivara!

Riven narrowed his eyes. "If you do anything, Kivara wonโ€™t ever..."

"Shut up! Just shut up! You and all the bastards from this sect! Iโ€™ve had enough of you guys, always talking and yapping. Iโ€™m forced to smile all the time, but now I donโ€™t have to again!" He stood up, and with a kick, he sent the table flying.

Riven was shocked.
