Chapter 77: A beating will do

Riven was shocked by the way his personality was flipped over so fast and sudden. It was as if another person had replaced him, and the person was filled with insanity.

Riven didn’t know much of what was going on.

But one thing he knew was that Zandrel meant him harm, and that was enough. He kicked his own chair to the side, and he began to inch toward the back wall where a window stood.

Zandrel was breathing hard, but a feverish smile lit up his face. "You talk about Kivara, but you fool, you didn’t really question why she was in that forest to begin with. You thought you coming here was all a coincidence?"

This made Riven pause so hard that his limbs stiffened. His eyes narrowed, and a terrible anger filled his face. His gut trembled and twisted. "Kivara?"

"...that bitch! She did betray me! I knew I should have killed her when I had the chance! I used her to get here, but turns out she was the one using me..."

Bitterness filled his eyes. It hit harder than he expected. Maybe it was because she was the first person ever he was close to, a quasi friend of sorts.

Then he smiled. "...she did tell me never to trust anyone. I was the one that did not follow that advice..."

His hand tightened on his sword. "What do you want, Zandrel?"

"Yes, that question. You see, Riven, for some reason you are something precious that was left behind by the Necromancer King. I don’t know what it is, but you are related to him somehow, and I’m going to find out how.

"When I do, then I will rip it out of you. That is my mission. You don’t know how it feels, waiting day after day. For years. I’ve spent fifty years of my life in this shit of a place, all because I am waiting for that precious thing to come to me."

His eyes seemed to be filled only with pure madness now. "The mirror does not lie. Every decision I’ve made led me to this place, to you, and I’m going to own you and keep you by my feet until the time I figure out what your deal is and rip it out of you."

Riven did not understand what he was yapping about, and he didn’t want to know. But the thought that someone had been waiting for him chilled him to the bones. He understood that he was in a deeper mess than he previously thought.

But he needed to keep Zandrel talking. "But you can’t mean me, right? What’s a villager got to do with all this?"

Zandrel’s face sharpened. "Right. What’s a villager supposed to do with a Sigil like yours too? It’s all come together, right? Oh, I can’t wait to give it to her after I have extracted it from you. I can’t wait!"

"Her? Which her? Are you working for someone? Who? What are you going to extract from me?" Riven asked all the questions at once, hoping to distract the man. He had no illusions of trying to beat Zandrel. His only hope was to run away as fast as possible.

Zandrel’s face twisted. "Shut it, brat. You’ll know all the answers soon enough after I have you in my hands. I will train you well, more than I did Kivara."

Riven shuddered. He didn’t even want to imagine that. He needed to get out of there and fast. He relaxed his body as if he had stopped fighting back and hunched his back, his face miserable. "You don’t have to do this. See, I can be your student. Yes, let’s do a normal student to master..."

Zandrel was already shaking his head. He sneered. "So you’ll pretend to be my student until you are much stronger than me? You can dream again!"

Riven suddenly exploded backwards without warning. He threw his sword at the man and then he turned and leaped through the window into the night outside.

He didn’t wait as he began to run forward, but he stopped just as suddenly because in front of him were two statues. They were armored, faces covered in helmets, and each was three times taller than him.

At first, Riven’s face showed relief. "The guard relic. Is the construct here because of the abnormality? To protect?"

But his delusion was soon shattered as one of the statues stretched its hand out, stones grinding together to catch him. He jumped back, moving towards the house once more as the two constructs closed in on him. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚

Behind him, his building shuddered, and he looked back just in time to see it fold on itself, turning from a building to a construct in the blink of an eye.

Riven stiffened as the new construct, that was shaped like an ape, clung to Zandrel. "You cannot run from me. This whole compound is my playing ground. What I want, I do here."

Riven turned to the left, walking slowly so that he could keep Zandrel and all his constructs in his eyes. "The gate guarding statues, what did you do to them?"

"I made them mine. Do you know the powers of a puppeteer? I can control anything that has joints. I can bring them to life and let them move. These relics have been mine a long time ago. I just let them play around in the sect.

"But do you know how to turn a human into a puppet? The first way is for them to become one willingly, like that contract you refused to sign. It would have been easier for you.

"The second way is when the other is near death. That’s when you take them as your puppet. It doesn’t matter if they accept or not."

Zandrel smiled, eyes shining with cruelty. "I think we know which side you fell in. The part where you need to be half dead. Now then, which method do you recommend for me to make you half dead? Come on, you should have ideas.

"I think a beating would do. What do you think, Riven?"
