Summoned to a Fantasy World With a Modern Military System-Chapter 69: A Terribly Beautiful Light
A small and dark object tumbled through the air and flew in a high, slow arc.
It was a green shape against the dark and smoky sky, with a metallic structure and matt finish. It was a frag grenade.
The grenade spun end over end and continued falling before it sailed silently over the open ground and went straight through the hanging cloth flap of the red tent.
A few seconds passed and the camp was completely and utterly silent.
But it was only short lived. A deep and loud sound was heard as an explosion occurred. It wasn't the sharp sound of the frag grenade, but something much bigger.
It was not a normal explosion either but a massive, blinding blast of golden light that blew the tent apart. The heavy red cloth was vaporized in an instant.
The thick wooden logs that held it up were snapped like twigs before they were tossed high into the air. A huge pillar of golden fire shot up into the night sky causing with it immense heat and pressure.
It lit up the entire camp area bright with the surrounding tents being bathed in a beautiful yet terrible golden light.
Luna stood in front of the where the tent used to be but at a distance, but she wasn't hiding anymore and was out in the open.
She was untouched by the blast and was safe from the explosion's force. She stood still there for a moment as her gaze was locked onto the blazing tent before her eyes.
Everything that was there was gone in an instant and vaporized.
The fire was like a raging pillar, shooting high into the night sky. The golden light was intense and it pulsed. It cast wild and dancing shadows across the entire camp with the other tents that were once pale and dark now being washed in this terrible and flickering gold.
Sparks, like tiny golden stars, shot up from the inferno. They drifted on the heat wave before they died in the cold night air. The sound was a deep and continuous roar and it was the sound of a giant forge.
The heat rolled across the open ground and Luna could feel it on her face. It was a dry and scorching wave of power.
She just stood there like a statue of stolen, muddy armor. The firelight played across the metal plates on her chest as it glinted off the red rose emblem.
Her face was hidden behind her helmet but her body was completely still. She stood there for a long moment as she just watched the fire burn without making much movement at all.
It was as if she was captivated by the beauty of the destruction it had caused. Or perhaps she was thinking what would have happened if Allen hadn't stopped her from going inside that time.
She kept looking at the flames for a while then a bit later she slowly reached up with both hands, her metal gauntlets were clumsy due to her not being able to be used to this armor.
They scraped against the side of the helmet as she fumbled with the straps under her chin. She unhooked them.
Then she lifted the heavy helmet as she pulled it up and off her head. A rush of cold night air felt good on her hot and sweaty skin which had been kept hidden under the metal helmet till now.
The firelight caught the polished silver of her own armor as she moved and the golden light seemed to dance across her chest plate.
It reflected brightly, and to be honest quite beautifully.
She let the helmet fall from her fingers and it hit the dirt with a soft and heavy thud. Her head felt light without it and she realized that maybe helmets weren't really her thing.
She gave her head a small shake and her long, silver hair which had been packed tightly inside the helmet till now was freed. It cascaded down her back as it fell over her shoulders in pale, shining waves.
The golden firelight seemed to love her hair and lit up the strands. They looked like threads of liquid silver and gold.
The flames were reflected in her wide and red eyes and they were like two tiny little burning worlds.
She watched the fire burn for another few minutes with the intense golden heat washing over her face. She then looked down at the armor she was wearing.
And after seeing to have come to a realization she moved with a suddenly as she reached up with her right hand, which was still bare inside the metal glove.
She began to work on the buckles of the left gauntlet while her fingers were clumsy inside the leather. The metal clasps were stiff and she grunted in frustration. It indeed was a little irritating.
However, she finally got the main strap undone. She pulled her hand free and the heavy glove of steel and leather fell to the dirt with a soft thud.
She flexed her bare left hand with her fingers now feeling light and free. She then used that hand to undo the right gauntlet. This was much easier since she had much better grip and control over it now that one of her hands was free.
The buckles came undone quickly and the second heavy glove dropped to the ground beside the first.
The firelight glinted off the red rose emblem on her chest.
The emblem was cracked and covered in grime.
She reached for the heavy leather straps at her side as her bare fingers worked quickly, unfastening the buckles that held the heavy chestplate together and rigid upon her body.
One strap came free. Then the second.
With a grunt of effort she pushed the heavy armor off her shoulders and the weight was lifted off her, and she could finally take a full deep breath.
The heavy front and back plates separated before they fell away from her body. They hit the dirt on either side of her with a loud and metallic CLANG. The sound was loud in the night but it was lost in the crackling and bustling of the raging fire.
She was left standing in her simple and light-colored under-tunic. The thin cloth felt strange and light in the open and the firelight was bright enough to illuminate it completely.
It felt warm against her skin through the thin fabric.
Although it seemed like Luna wasn't yet done with things.
She sat down on the hard and cold ground before she began to unlace the heavy and muddy boots. They were stiff and they were uncomfortable and they made walking a bit of a trouble for her.
It wasn't as if she couldn't move at all in those or she was walking while losing her balance again and again like Allen, no that wasn't the case. But if she wanted to get in combat then she needed to get rid of all the excess weight that might be holding her back.
Her fingers were fast now and using them she pulled the boots off, one by one. She tossed them aside with the rest of the useless armor.
Finally, she stood up. She was free of the disguise and the muddy armor and now she was dressed just in her simple tunic and trousers, with her silver hair loose.
She looked like a ghost in the golden light of the fire, with her frail skin and those deep red eyes combined with the silver hair that gleamed in gold as the light of the fire passed between its strands.
She gazed at the burning tent with her hands now dropped to her side, standing completely in the open.
"What a coincidence! I didn't expect to see you here Luna Revoltstar," someone's voice suddenly fell onto her ears.
However, instead of panicking she calmly turned around. There she saw an old man who seemed to be in his mid forties or fifties.
He stood there clad in a light golden armor which mostly covered his chest, arms, and legs.
Rather than being a complete armor it was bits and pieces of it made to protect only few body parts, but in turn provided great mobility.
The old man was none other than Randolf, looking at Luna with a slight smile on his face. As if he had just caught his prey.
He was there surrounded with a squad of other knights who were fully armed and ready to go into battle any moment.
"Quite a coincidence indeed," Luna replied, looking at him. "Though I think it just works out in my favour, I was thinking about meeting you anyway. This just saved me the formalities."
"Oh, you certainly say some interesting things," he replied with a chuckle. Then his gaze moved past Luna and toward the tent that had burned down and all that remained in its place were huge flames of gold.
"I see. It seems like the Perseverance knights aren't as mindless as I had expected," he said out loud.
