Chapter 108 -103: Promise of Eternal Love·Insult to Intelligence
Ye Chen opened the book, which contained the strange characters he had seen that night. In between those characters, there were also some bizarre images. Ye Chen didn’t have the faintest idea what they meant.
However, the Red Demonic Spirit kept nodding and said, “Yes, these are the ones we saw that night. They can be paired perfectly with what we saw, forming a match.”
“Really? Can this book help me decipher those characters and images we saw that night?”
The Red Demonic Spirit nodded again.
“So if they match, they can be explained.”
“Yes, once the match is found, everything makes sense,” the Red Demonic Spirit added. “Remember to keep it safe. If you lose it, you will have difficulty understanding again.”
Ye Chen kept the book close to his chest. This book could be the key to his future and his chance to regain his dignity in front of Su Hong. He sorted through his belongings, took some jewelry to sell (he needed travel funds), and put the suitcase back under the bed. The fire continued to grill skewers of fish which were almost done.
A strong smell of grilled fish filled the air and suddenly a yellow dog wandered in from outside. It was a female, possibly not fully grown yet. The Tibetan Mastiff, still hesitant to attack.
Ye Chen called out, “Ah Huang, come over here. Long time no see.”
“Is this your dog? I’ve never absorbed canine aura before. Shall I treat you to a hotpot?” The Red Demonic Spirit excitedly suggested.
“Heh heh, it’s not mine. It’s the neighbor’s,” Ye Chen shouted back.
“That’s even better. No emotional ties, so it’ll be easier to get it done.”
“Who said there are no emotional ties? Neighbors’ dogs have feelings too. Don’t you dare harm Ah Huang. If you need to absorb something, go absorb some other animal,” Ye Chen said as he tossed some food for Ah Huang. The Red Demonic Spirit circled around like a snake, attracting Ah Huang’s attention. Ah Huang seemed somewhat scared and didn’t dare to approach.
“Don’t mind it, just eat your food,” Ye Chen said as he petted Ah Huang.
The ancient demon said, “Let’s discuss where to go!” He looked at the fields below, which were covered in darkness, and noticed no one on the road. He continued, “I can’t stay in such a place for a night, let alone a lifetime. It’s just not possible.”
“Not possible?”
“Yes, we can go somewhere better. Staying here is no different than staying on Earth Demon Island.”
“That’s not true! Earth Demon Island is a forsaken place. Here is far better than Earth Demon Island. There are so many good people here, and they are especially kind.”
“So, you want to stay here for a few years? I can’t do that. I just got my freedom. I want to see the world.”
“There’s plenty to see here too.”
“Don’t try to trick me. I’m not falling for it,” the Red Demonic Spirit replied.
Ye Chen laughed.
“Let’s find a big city.”
“Cities are dangerous! All you want to do is look at girls, aren’t there girls here too?”
“So, you want me to look at village girls? I won’t be tricked by you. I can stay with you for a few days, but if you think I’m going to live here for years, you’re dreaming.”
As Ye Chen was eating his grilled fish, he thought about how to master martial arts. If he couldn’t master them, he would be nothing. His mother had sent him to Immortal City to learn martial arts. If he couldn’t master them, he would let down his deceased mother.
“Ah Huang, do you think I’m right? I’ve been living here for thirteen years, haven’t I?” Ye Chen said.
“You need to broaden your horizons. It’s clear this isn’t the best place for that. Do you really want your biological father to say you’ve accomplished nothing in life?”
His words stung Ye Chen, who became serious.
“Right, my words may be harsh, but that’s the truth. You can’t stay in a place like this forever, or you’ll really become a country bumpkin. I suppose I’d become one too,” the Red Demonic Spirit said.
Ye Chen continued eating.
“We should find a place where we can really shine.”
“Aren’t you afraid of running into those people from the Demon and Evil Domains? What if they catch you and force you to practice martial arts?”
The Red Demonic Spirit thought for a moment, then said, “That’s a bit scary, but we’ll just go somewhere they can’t find.”
“They can’t find this place here.”
“You really think I would stay here and tend cattle with you? I won’t be wasted like that.” The Red Demonic Spirit paused for a moment, then added, “Wait, your father found you here. Wouldn’t they come back here looking for you?”
Hearing this, Ye Chen fell silent. He opened a jar of wine and took a couple sips. He had to admit the demon had a point. Su Hong would certainly have sent people looking for him. It seemed staying here much longer was unwise.
“They’ll think you have nowhere else to go and that you’re likely to be here,” the Red Demonic Spirit seemed worried.
Ye Chen continued to eat his grilled fish and asked, “Ah Huang, does this taste good?”
At this point, Ah Huang seemed less scared. While eating the grilled fish, she had become much more calm.
“What do you think about going to a big city? We can occasionally go out for drinks and find some meaning in life.”
“To you, what constitutes a meaningful life?”
“A life that is not wasted. I am a hedonist by nature. Life is short, so we should cherish it.”
“You’ve lived for thousands of years and you still complain that life is short?”
“In the past centuries, I’ve been sealed in a cave without cherishing anything. There’s not much difference between being alive and being dead.”
“I guess for you, living in a woman’s bosom would be the most meaningful thing, right?”
“I can’t say for certain, but I believe living that way would be quite good.”
“Heh heh, stop daydreaming. I won’t let you go around ruining people’s lives,” Ye Chen said.
“Tell me about your Little Hua. Why were you so angry earlier?”
“Who’s angry? You’re talking nonsense,” Ye Chen was clearly uneasy.
“You’re getting angry now. Was she your ex-lover?”
“Enough! If you keep talking nonsense, I’ll lose my temper.” Clearly upset, Ye Chen turned his attention away from this sarcastic conversation and back to Little Hua.
“I get it, just women.”
Ye Chen shook his head, increasingly convinced of his mother’s words, and muttered, “Finally understand. The talk of eternal love is nothing but an insult to intelligence.”
“Hey, are you really going to let someone wait for you a lifetime? Wake up, those vows are just to deceive innocent young men.”
A crescent moon was hanging high in the sky.
Ye Chen fell into deep thought. The Red Demonic Spirit was right; since Su Hong knew him, it was highly likely that he would return here to find him. He couldn’t stay here for long; he would leave when it was dawn.
Ye Chen felt as if he had aged ten years in a flash. Especially in the last two months, the secret in his heart had been revealed. The most shocking thing was his mother’s death; his father’s denial gave him a sense of pride. He couldn’t be shameless; he had to live a satisfying life. He must, otherwise, he’d let his dead mother down.
“What are you thinking about?” the thousand-year-old monster asked, seeing Ye Chen suddenly fall silent.
“Should we leave the Central Plains?” Ye Chen asked.
“Leave the Central Plains? Is it because you don’t want your dad to meet you? Are you afraid they’ll recognize you?”
“We’ve been wanted in the Central Plains. It’s best to leave rather than get caught up again.”
“Leave Central Plains and go where?”
“Enter the Wastelands.”
“The Wastelands, it’s a harsh and cold place. There are millions of Little Huas. Don’t hate the whole Central Plains for the sake of one Little Hua.”
“What nonsense are you talking!”
“So it’s because of your dad.”
The most powerful being in the Wastelands is the Third Demon. A hundred years ago, ever since the Third Demon routed the strongest demon with the help of the Xianmo Realm, he mended ties with the Xianmo Realm and took control of the Wastelands. As of now, they kept to themselves; the Wastelands and the Xianmo Realm didn’t interfere with each other. Entering the Wastelands is akin to severing ties with the Xianmo Realm.
“Don’t go to the extreme because of Little Hua, it’s no different from becoming a monk. Little Hua won’t be sad because of you. That’s just self-torment, and it’s pointless.”
“I heard that Wasteland City is a nice city.”
Ye Chen stood up and turned around, wanting to take a good look at this place. If he really had to leave, when could he return? Maybe he would never come back.
Yu Yun and the others stayed in a small town where there were several inns.
Guo Mingyu said, “Yun’er, get some rest earlier. We should reach there by noon tomorrow.”
“Alright, you rest first.” Guo Yuyun sat by the window.
He Xibai said, “Girl, what more do you need to worry about?”
“I’m not worrying about anything.”
“Isn’t he safe now and the people of the Evil Domain don’t know that he’s out yet, so there’s nothing for you to worry about.”
“I just didn’t expect him to have such an experience.”
“Indeed, his experiences were rather unfortunate. However, if he’s willing to let us help him, we’ll do our best to assist him.” Xibai said.
“He said my sister likes him.”
“He must be talking nonsense.”
“I don’t know, but I want to ask my sister to see if there’s any truth to it.”
“So, you do believe it? He’s just tricking you. How could your sister ever fall for him? ”
“You said he deceived me, but he truly knows a lot about my sister. He knew about the disagreement between my sister and my mother, and what kind of person my sister is.”
“That doesn’t prove anything; he might have eavesdropped.”
Yu Yun smiled lightly,
“I’m so curious about what happened between him and my sister in Immortal City.”
“Stop daydreaming and go to sleep. It’s uncertain whether we can meet him tomorrow.”
The night was pitch-black.
Ye Chen had a little wine and went to rest, feeling tired. He didn’t bother tidying everything up.
The night passed quickly, leaving no trace.
Early in the morning, heavy fog shrouded the fields. Some early birds had already started singing.
Suddenly, several dog barks rang out, shattering the quiet of the fields. It must be Ah Huang’s bark, a cry of terror. The barks woke him up. Then, he heard a flurry of footsteps. Ye Chen felt that something was off. He murmured, thinking, “Could it be a disciple of the Xianmo Realm? I just got back.”
He quickly woke up the thousand-year-old monster inside his body, “It’s not good, there seems to be someone.”
“What do you mean, ‘someone’?”
More terrified barks came, which abruptly stopped.

Ye Chen hurriedly stood up, looking outside through a small hole in the door. He got quite a scare. It wasn’t someone from the Xianmo Realm but people from the Demon Domain. Damn it! How did these people from the Demon Domain follow me here? They didn’t follow me that night. How did they know I came back here?
“People from the Demon Domain.”
“Yes, I saw them,” said Ye Chen.
Those people had already pushed open the fence. More than a dozen people were holding swords, walking into the yard.
The Red Demonic Spirit said, “Let’s fight our way out.”
“Don’t be delusional. How can we fight our way out? I am alone and they have already surrounded this place.”
“So, what should we do?”
“Let’s hide first.” Ye Chen grabbed the book and tucked it in his bosom.
