Chapter 38 -34: Tighten Your Belts
Ye Chen added another handful of dry firewood into the fire.
The inside of the cave was relatively warm, but cold air still drifted in.
Yu Qing pinched her clothes.
Ye Chen laughed and said, “Pinching won’t do you any good, with just the two of us in this cave. With your injured foot, do you think you could run away?”
Yu Qing retorted angrily, “If you dare, I’ll whack you with this stick.”
“Sure, go ahead, kill me. Let’s see how you’ll get out. People outside will probably think we’ve been taken by some monster after searching for us for a couple of days. They’ll definitely give up, convinced we’re dead.” Ye Chen continued emotionally, “If you want to knock me out, you’d better let me think of a way to carry you out of here first, then you can knock me out.”
“I’ll keep your advice in mind.”
“Go to sleep early. I’m not going to chat with you anymore.” Ye Chen curled up in a corner, glanced back, and jokingly asked, “You don’t sleepwalk, do you? Don’t come around and commit indecency on me! I won’t take any responsibility.”
“Haha, you wish.”
“Great, otherwise I might’ve thought about going outside.”
“Go, go now.”
“Better not. That fog is too thick. Breathing it in all night makes me feel unrested. I won’t have any energy in the morning.”

Because the night was pitch dark, Su Hong and his party circled the top of the mountain but didn’t venture off to secluded areas. After midnight, they rested.
Zhan Ze mumbled, “Dad, do you think the two of them really encountered some kind of monster?”
“Don’t scare yourself. We’ll search the cliff and the secret caves, as well as the secluded spots after sunrise,” Su Hong said.
Zhan Ze felt somewhat at a loss.
Su Hong advised, “Rest now. We’ll search again when it’s bright.”
Su Hong obtained a map of the mountain, which indicated where the caves were, as well as other things to be mindful of. He planned to have an intensive search after sunrise. He was starting to believe that there were indeed things not to be seen, but didn’t dare to proceed with that thought.
Shi Zi was most anxious, “What if something really happened to them?”
“Hey, don’t scare yourself,” Jing Xing said.
“Then explain this to me: where could the two of them have gone after vanishing like this?”
Jing Xing was at a loss for words. Even he couldn’t convince himself.
Shi Zi blamed herself, “It’s all my fault.”
Zhan Ze felt some regret for leaving Ye Chen alone here. But they were so anxious at the time. Who could have anticipated this outcome? They thought it would be just a matter of waiting a while before Haotian would bring them down. But who could have imagined he’d also go missing.
Speculations were running wild. Everyone was very worried. Most believed that there was indeed some monster on the mountain. If that was the case, could they still be alive?
Everyone prayed fervently, hoping no such thing had happened.
They had vanished for a whole night and when dawn faintly broke, Zhan Ze just couldn’t sleep anymore. Some were preparing food. Some were getting ready with gear for descent down the cliff. Some prepared to enter the secret caves.
They had ropes ready.
After dealing with the pain the whole night yesterday, Yu Qing finally fell asleep from exhaustion after the third watch.
An animal noise woke Yu Qing who was still in her dream. She found Ye Chen had lit a fire and was roasting two pieces of the unfinished Grilled Sesame Seed Cake.
“Hey, you didn’t sleepwalk last night, did you? And you didn’t do anything indecent to me, did you?”
Yu Qing gave a cold laugh. Her first thought was about the condition of her foot. Once she unwrapped it, the medicine that had been applied all night was already dry. She brushed away the medicated dregs and saw that the swelling had gone down a bit compared to the previous night.
“Is this medicine more effective than the saliva you spat out?” Ye Chen asked.
She touched it herself. Now it felt numb, but the pain was still there when pressed. She replied, “It still hurts.”
“Of course, it’s an injury of sinews and bones. Do you think this is some magical cure? Even if it was a magical cure, it can’t heal in one night. I don’t have that kind of power.” He handed over a steaming hot Grilled Sesame Seed Cake to her. He gave her the water bag and added, “I’ve had a sip from it. My saliva is on it. If you find that uncomfortable, then don’t drink it.”
Yu Qing glared at him, took the water bag and pursed her lips.
“There’s only one bag of water. I don’t have a choice. I’m thirsty too. I won’t save it all for you. I’m not Zhan Ze. But don’t worry, I didn’t spit it out.”
“Could you be less disgusting?” Yu Qing took the water bag, her lips chapped.
“There are two Grilled Sesame Seed Cakes left. One for you, one for me. After we eat, we’ll leave this place.”
“You mean, climb back up to the top of the mountain?”
“I’m not capable of that. Even if I could climb up, can you? Relying on me to carry you up to the cliff. I want to live. I admit I’m not capable, I’m not Zhan Ze, I won’t risk my life.”
“Then where are we going?”
“First, let’s figure out how to get away from this cliff.”
“So you’re not planning to let them know?”
“Hey, let’s look out for ourselves first. Do you really want to stay here and not descend the mountain?”
“They don’t even know if we’re alive.”
“Of course I know that.”
“But I still can’t walk.”
“I can stay with you, right?” Ye Chen said, “Just fill your belly first, anything else can wait.” Last night when he came in, he took a look, it seemed there was a path, leading out of here.
“Still need to put a compress on?”
Ye Chen pounded a little more pine nuts.
“So, do you want to get better quickly or just stay here forever, living like a caveman? If you want to, I can only leave you here, then bring Su Zhanze back to rescue you, how about that?”
“It still hurts,” Yu Qing claimed.
“Of course it hurts, you’re still pretty banged up.”
“That cliff path, I can’t walk it.
“Don’t start by telling yourself you can’t do it, if you don’t even try, how will you know you can’t do it?” Ye Chen replied.
“This is not about will or skill, one inadvertent move and you could fall off.”
“Would you be assured if I carried you out of here? It’s easier to trip when with two people, we could fly off together.” Ye Chen put the pounded pine nuts onto her lesion, and helped her by relacing her foot, he said, “There’s a cliff that’s a dozen yards high, as long as we move slowly, once we get past it, we’ll reach the mountainside, it’ll be flat there, then I can carry you.”
Yu Qing looked at him.
“Upon reaching there, I can carry you down, but for those dozen yards, the path is quite dangerous, we can only slowly retreat to the mountainside.”
Yu Qing didn’t say anything.
“How about this, I can tie one end of my belt around you, and the other around me, if you fall down, I will fall with you. Don’t you feel touched by this?”
“Why should I want you to fall with me? A belt? Tie it tight, don’t let your pants fall off.”
“Let’s not tie anything. I really don’t want to die with you.”
Yu Qing gave him a disdainful look.
“Alright, let’s go.” Ye Chen stood up.
“You better tie up your belt properly, don’t let it loosen at the edge of the cliff and not be able to pull it back up.”
“Thanks for the heads up, I’ll be careful. To see me naked? In your dreams.”
Upon hearing this, Yu Qing gave a cold smirk.
Ye Chen extinguished the fire and asked: “Should I help by pushing you out first, then follow you out?”
Yu Qing stood up, walked a few steps, it was still pretty uncomfortable, but at least it was slightly better than last night. She got a feel for it, then prepared to go out.
Ye Chen got to the entrance of the cave, acting as a ladder, shortly Yu Qing, with his help, reached the entrance and said, “You should conserve your food, you’re even heavier than me, you’ve really got a thick waist now, you’re a fatty!”
She swung a leg back, nearly kicking Ye Chen in the face: “I’ve told you, do not swing, you could really tumble down, this is no joke.”
With Ye Chen’s help, Yu Qing finally made it clumsily outside of the cave entrance.
Ye Chen shouted again, you wait for me at the entrance of the cave, hold steady first.
Very soon, Ye Chen also climbed out of the cave.
Yu Qing glanced around, below the fog was thick and the abyss was deep, she didn’t know where to go, her heart was pounding with fright.
Ye Chen said again: “Don’t look up or down, it will only create fear, try not to look down the cliff, just imagine you’re on flat ground.”
By then, Yu Qing had already broken out in a cold sweat.
“Which direction should we go?” Yu Qing asked.
Ye Chen pointed and said, “We head east. I looked around here last night. As long as we follow this path, we can cross over to a much flatter area. The sun hasn’t come out yet, so it won’t be that uncomfortable. We’ll go slow, I’ll lead the way, you just follow slowly.”
Feeling the thumping of her own heartbeat, Yu Qing took a deep breath.
“Better to tie ourselves together.”
“No need, just tighten your belt.”
“Don’t worry, it’s not the belt. My pants are tied tightly, they won’t loosen. You want it to loosen, but I don’t want you to see. If something really happens, at least there’ll be someone to witness, at least we’ll pass away as a pair. So Su Zhanze won’t blame me later.” He tied one end of the rope around his hand, and the other end around hers, and said, “Have you calmed down yet? When you’re calm, we can head out.”
Yu Qing rolled over, leaning against the stone wall. There were some uneven rocks on the stone wall she could grab onto.
“After all, the most abundant thing we have is time, we’ll just move slowly, no need to rush. If you’re tired, just let me know, we’ll rest.” Ye Chen glanced at his other side.
“That’s fine, no more talking, let’s hurry up.”
“Alright, just follow me.”
Monkeys at the bottom of the mountain were chattering. There was a group of monkeys living on the cliff, now just about ready to come out in search for food, jumping around.
Ye Chen started to guide Yu Qing slowly in the direction of the east.
She could only put half of her foot down.
Ye Chen knew it hurt, but it wasn’t a good idea to help at the edge of the cliff. It was likely to make things worse if she got flustered, so she had to do it by herself.
Ye Chen continued to move forward, stopping every few steps to let her rest and ease the pain in her foot. Suddenly, a rapid sound of alarmed monkey cries came. The monkeys moved very quickly on these cliffs, a large group swinging swiftly toward them in sporadic clusters, which was quite frightening.
A bit flustered, Yu Qing asked, “What shall we do?”
