Chapter 39 -35: Have you hugged enough?
Ye Chen glanced around and said, “Don’t move. Stand still, let the monkeys pass, don’t look at them, it might give them the impression that you’re trying to attack them.”
Yu Qing nodded, and the two of them plastered themselves against the cliff. At that moment, a troop of monkeys was swiftly coming down the same path.
“Look how fast they’re moving.”
Yu Qing responded, “Too bad I’m not a monkey.”
“True, even if you were, you’d be a crippled one.”
A swift palm strike followed.
Before long, the crowd of monkeys dwindled, and everything became quiet again.
They continued their treacherous trek.
“You see, it’s not that hard. It’s good exercise for you, and it might even help your foot heal faster.” Ye Chen tried to make conversation, hoping to alleviate some of her anxiety. Pure silence and constant fear could make one even more agitated.
“I wish we could hurry up and cross.”
“I wish that too, I’d like to live a little longer. But we can’t rush this. One step at a time.”
“I knew you wouldn’t want to fall off this cliff with me.”
“Do you really wish for me to fall with you? This is a golden opportunity. We better leave it for Young Master Ze!” On their journey, Ye Chen would glance back at Yu Qing every few steps to check if she was keeping up. If not, he would wait for her. The path, though made by monkeys, was still accessible for humans. It was relatively decent, perhaps because it was frequently traveled by monkeys.
“What do you want to eat? When we get up there, let me know, and I’ll cook a meal for you. We can watch the sunrise after we eat, get to know each other better, then come back down.” Ye Chen suggested.
“Who wants to watch the sunrise with you and bond with you?”
“Right, I know, your heart yearns for Zhan Ze. Unfortunately, it’s your unlucky day. The one who came to save you isn’t Zhan Ze. Please bear with it. After all, I’m not that ugly.”
“So you’re finally acknowledging that you’re ugly. I thought you were delusional.”
Ye Chen chuckled and retorted, “You’re the one with cross-eyes!”
“You’re the one with cross-eyes! I have never seen someone as ugly as you.”
“Well, at least you’re pretty.”
“Of course I am! And I certainly don’t need you telling me that.”
“There’s just one thing you’re lacking – charm.”
“What would a cowherd know about charm?”
“Hehe, so you think cowherds can only herd cows, hunt, and plant rice?”
“Aren’t they?”
Ye Chen pondered for a moment and replied, “Charm is a sense of calm and cool, a visible manifestation of inner cultivation. Is that right? And you, quick-tempered, resorting to violence at every turn, don’t possess charm.”
“Heh, a cowherd trying to sound intellectual.”
“So, you really look down on cowherds, huh? But honestly, I’m not really a cowherd. I just used to follow the village’s cowherd to herd cows.”
“Doesn’t that still make you a cowherd?”
“Fine, if you say I am, then I am. Regardless of whether you have prejudice against cowherds or not, I don’t care.”
“I don’t have any prejudices against cowherds, but I do against you.”
“Why is that? Is it because I said you are self-loathing and love putting on a show, so you have a grudge against me?” As they chatted, Ye Chen continued to carefully make his way forward, paying attention to the stability of the rocks under his feet and pressing on only when it felt secure.
Both of them were clinging tightly to the cliff, gripping the jagged rocks.
“Calling me a cowherd seems to give you a sense of superiority, doesn’t it?”
“You’re overthinking.”
“Don’t pay too much attention to me; I fear you might actually start to like me.” The thought of this brat knowing even things like his father’s story gave him chills.
Yu Qing gave a cold smile, “You’re really full of yourself.”
“Self-obsessed I am!” Their path had abruptly become difficult when they saw a half-a-foot-long creature with alternating black and white stripes approaching them from the other side of the cliff. It was moving fast, heading toward Yu Qing. Reflecting on his options, Ye Chen realized speeding up would not outpace it. What should he do?
“Are you struck by lightning or something? Why aren’t you moving? Are you planning to molest me now? I swear I would rather die with you!”

“Good idea.”
Ye Chen looked at her as if something was amiss with her face. “Is there something on my face?” she asked.
“I’m seriously considering taking advantage of you right here, let’s see if you dare to jump off the cliff.” Ye Chen couldn’t reveal that there was a snake approaching her from behind. The news would certainly frighten her.
Looking around, Ye Chen managed to find a two-foot-long stick that felt like a lifeline.
Not knowing what he was up to, Yu Qing asked, “What are you doing?”
“Nothing, just stand still.” Grasping the stick, Ye Chen turned around just to see Yu Qing realizing something was moving behind her. She turned and saw a snake as long as herself slithering toward her, making her legs weak.
“Ah, a snake…” As she grew nervous, her trembling legs started shaking even more.
Ye Chen quickly grabbed her and pressed her against the cliff, saying, “Don’t look. Have I ever told you that I’m actually very good at snake catching? This kind of snake is especially nourishing. Out in the countryside, there are two pots of snake soak liquor at my home. Not only is it very nourishing, but it makes you feel warm all winter. Many women actually take pleasure in making this liquor for their husbands.”
Yu Qing huddled into herself and didn’t dare to look at the snake. Ye Chen used one arm to hold her steady against the cliff while with his other hand, he used the stick to probe the snake.
“Making snake soup is also a good idea, especially in this season. Snakes that have been hibernating all winter are at their fattest.”
“Heh, have you managed to scare it away?”
“Don’t look. Hold on to the cliff, hold it tight. Be calm.”
The snake had already raised its head, ready to strike. But Ye Chen wouldn’t allow it. He acted first, delivering a swift strike directly to its fatal spot, throwing it off the cliff. He could finally breathe easy.
“Is it gone?”
“Yeah, it’s gone.” Ye Chen threw the stick away, adding, “Such a pity to lose that luscious snake soup.”
Yu Qing turned around, the snake was nowhere to be seen.
“Where’s the snake?”
“Down the cliff, you miss it, don’t you?”
“Hmm,” teased Qing’er. “Considering how many odd things you eat, no one’s ever told you that you have bad breath?”
“My breath stinks, how is that possible!” Ye Chen retorted.
“Yes, you wouldn’t know since you can’t smell it.”
“Fine, I have bad breath, happy now?”
“Considering you even eat snake soup, I should just start calling you a savage. You really do eat everything, don’t you? Even with special requests.”
“It’s in human nature to eat.”
“I wonder if there’s any meat you can’t consume.”
“Human flesh is a definite no-no.”
“Are you sure you’re not curious to try it out?”
“I haven’t thought about it yet, but I might consider trying it in the future,” Ye Chen exhaled a breath and sniffed, checking to see if he actually had bad breath.
Yu Qing giggled and asked, “Can you smell it?”
“Listen, put more effort into watching your step, or else you might fall. Whether you have bad breath or not, you’re still dead if you tumble off the cliff,” he said, clearly annoyed.
Yu Qing just kept giggling on the side.
The path ahead suddenly got steeper. “Stay still, I’ll go first. Wait here until I’ve secured the path ahead. Then you can come over slowly,” Ye Chen advised.
The path narrowed down, so Ye Chen had to move ahead carefully. Before long, he got to the other side.
Watching him, Yu Qing murmured, “He’s just like a monkey.”
“Alright, it’s your turn.”
Yu Qing looked down the cliff fearfully, and Ye Chen quickly said, “Don’t look down, just take it easy. I’m holding the rope and ready to help. Just be careful, especially with your injured foot.”
Then, with a “swoosh,” the water flask plummeted off the cliff, swallowed by the heavy fog.
“It’s just a water flask, no big deal. Don’t look down.”
Yu Qing looked terrified and her foot began to quake.
“Focus. First, grab the rocks on both sides.”
Yu Qing clung to the rocks, stepped over with one foot, and left her injured foot dangling.
“Move your free foot over, secure it, then bring the injured foot,” instructed Ye Chen.
“Can you stop your endless chatter? Let me have some peace.”
Ye Chen fell silent.
The ledge was the final hurdle. Once they managed to get over it, the rest of the journey should be smooth. He stared at her, admiring her beauty and wondering if her face was real. Meanwhile, he held onto the rope, ready for any sudden mishaps.
Very slowly, she edged closer. Only one big step remained.
At that moment, Yu Qing asked, “What should I do now?”
“Jump across with your uninjured foot,” Ye Chen suggested.
Yu Qing took one look down and broke out in a cold sweat. “Oh, momma!” she exclaimed.
“Even your mom can’t help you now, just jump,” Ye Chen reassured her.
“But how can I jump?”
“Haven’t you ever watched a kangaroo? Trust me, I’ll catch you. Be brave, jump with your uninjured leg. There’s no going back now. Beneath these rough exterior lies a heart as warm as a furnace, not all girls can appreciate it, but I believe in you,” said Ye Chen. “Don’t look down anymore, it will just make you nervous. I promise to catch you, just be careful with your other foot.”
For a moment Yu Qing glanced back at the path they had travelled. She wanted to retreat.
“There’s only one step left, then it’ll be smooth sailing. Otherwise, we’ll have to go back to the cave and wait for your foot to heal before we leave again. And when that happens, you’ll still have to take this path. You don’t want to go back, do you?”
Indeed, there was no other way out.
In that moment, she could hear her own heart pounding in her chest.
“Come on, girl. I have faith in you. Don’t make me lose my respect for y– dumb woman, you can’t even jump?” He resorted to reverse psychology, hoping it would motivate her.
Yu Qing glared at him before shrieking, “Stop rushing me, you monkey!”
“Fine, I won’t rush you.”
“If I fall down, I swear I’ll come back to haunt you.”
With a sudden gasp, she leapt. Her foot landed with a tremble, almost causing her to kneel. Ye Chen gripped the rock with one hand and rushed to hold onto her with the other, cradling her closely.
Their frantic heartbeats filled the air, making Ye Chen break into a cold sweat.
They both breathed a sigh of relief. It felt as if they had just escaped from death.
“Oh my god,” exclaimed Yu Qing.
“It seems we do need to thank your mother for her blessings,” he said, somewhat humorously.
All of a sudden, Yu Qing looked at Ye Chen. “Have you held me long enough?” They came face to face. She had never been this close to a boy—close enough to hear his heart hammering in his chest, close enough to feel his breaths coming out in ragged gasps.
“Not really.”
“Then continue.”
“Alright.”
As quick as a flash, Qing’er pointed at Ye Chen’s forehead.
Ye Chen loosened his grip immediately. “I held you because I was worried about you.”
“Sure. You were probably just trying to take advantage,” sniped Yu Qing.
