Survive As The Brute's Wife-Chapter 191: The King
Alexandra looked at Marcus sitting in front of her with his head bowed. Alexandra visited the capital city of Lathlin a couple of times in the past week. She wanted to see how the people are faring after the supposed "death" of their Emperor.
Riots and confusion ruled the streets in certain areas. Most of them were started by those who were vying for the throne. The Throne that was no more still garnered the desire of many.
One faction had collected the pieces of the golden throne she broke into pieces and made a new golden throne and were planning on making one of the Dukes the next Emperor.
Well, she had to go there and tell them that the Empire of Lethusia is no more. She was surprised by the vitriol they spewed when she said that she is going to free the nations that were conquered by war and give them a hefty compensation from their treasury for the damages caused by the Lethusian Emperor.
Well, not that surprised because she knew humans loved gold and money more than anything.
It was incomprehensible to her because no immortal she knows values the "riches" more than the people around them. When you live a long life, they tend to get numbed to the comforts wealth brings.
She wouldn’t lie. Most immortals live life comfortably. They do have a lot of time to acquire wealth after all. But they never put their mind to the riches. What intrigues them is the true companionship and camaraderie which is hard to achieve.
Lord Zoros had good leadership qualities. He listened to Marcus and he didn’t show despise towards her for killing his Emperor. He asked her what she wanted to be done and did it rather intelligently. With his help, the city was under control with no major incidents happening.
Nothing major except the death of the Dowager Queen. But since everyone was grieving the loss of their Emperor, no one cared that much for that power-hungry woman. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢
Alexandra did get the advice from Maximus to know who to trust and who not to trust. She thought he would ask her to join her during her visit to the city, but he didn’t. She was surprised, but she was relieved too. It appeared that he loved being a farmer more than being a King.
She didn’t care about all that. He is her husband and that’s all she wanted.
She did not meet Arioch even once. She heard that he was kept in a tower with maximum security and that he laughs maniacally at times. The guards tried to shut him up but he keeps on shouting that he is the Great King, only for the guards to get angry at him.
She didn’t care about what happened to Arioch. She hoped he lives long enough to see the good changes that are to be brought up by the Zoros Dynasty.
Arioch does not know the truths about the Lukyan lineage and the Zoros lineage. Maybe she will tell him that he does not belong to the Lukyan line. Maximus is the first Lukyan. And Arioch hates the Zoros lineage. He would be devastated to see a Zoros by name take the throne to Lethusia.
He won’t be laughing then!
The second time she went to visit the palace to talk to Lord Zoros about her plans to instate Marcus as the King of Lethusia. He was petrified by that prospect. She asked him if he is hesitant to make his son the King when he is the elder. But she saw the utter panic on Lord Zoros’ face.
’I am unworthy to carry such a burden,’ he refused curtly after he composed himself. But she is not there to negotiate. She is the guide. She told him the way forward. Lethusia should have Marcus Zoros as its leader.
It was the wish of the Creator. And it will be done.
She met Marcus and he joined her. Alexandra understood that he wants to confirm that Maximus is fine. So she didn’t refuse him.
[The love this boy has for Maximus...]
Alexandra with a smile looked at Maximus sitting there stone-faced. She shook her head in disappointment. He shrugged as if he didn’t understand what she meant.
"Am I to be King, Your Royal Highness?" he asked. This time, there was no confusion on his face. He looked prepared for his role and just wanted her confirmation.
"Yes." Alexandra smiled. She’s been talking about it to him for some time and he was shown visions in the past too. He had enough time to prepare his heart.
They had dinner together and Marcus kept on staring at Maximus. It was obvious that he wanted to talk to Maximus. After she gestured for Maximus to stop being petty and have a conversation with his half-brother, Maximus agreed half-heartedly.
Alexandra leaned on the door with a hearty smile and watched Maximus and Marcus taking a walk through the farm. She saw Maximus hanging his trusted sword on his waist. He did some modifications in the design of the hilt after she expressed her decision to make Marcus the King. He didn’t touch the sword ever in their days on the farm. And now he carries it.
[Aww... he wants to give his sword to Marcus, doesn’t he... Why can’t he agree that he likes Marcus?]
Maximus’ sharp eyes ended on Marcus walking side by side with him. He grew a lot since the last time he saw him. He reached his shoulders now. Or was he this tall always? He didn’t know.
"I am glad you are healthy, Your Majesty," Marcus said and Maximus stopped walking.
"Don’t address me as Majesty. I am but a humble farmer," Maximus said, placing his hand on his heart.
Those words... He never thought that addressing himself as a farmer would give him this much peace. But then again, it might be just because his wife is with him and is watching him even now. He wanted to get angry at her for observing him like a hawk. It’s not like he would take a bite out of her Paladin’s heart!
Marcus gulped. "But you are my liege forever," he said, placing his hand on his chest.
"No. You are going to be King. Be mindful of your position. You cannot consider a dead person as your liege."
"But..." Marcus pressed his lips and swallowed his words. Maximus is right. He cannot bring up Maximus as their Emperor ever again.
"I know I would never be as great as you are. And I am very disappointed that I have to erase your good deeds to expose what Adonis Lukyan did," Marcus spoke his heart.
Maximus smiled covering his mouth. He wouldn’t expect these words from the mouth of a twelve-year-old. But he is not any twelve-year-old. He is the Paladin his wife chose and the one his wife thinks would be a better King.
His wife never goes wrong.
"My greatness is all but a vanity I created, Marcus. Don’t be like me," he said and got the sword from his waist.
"Here," he held out the sword to Marcus. "This is Silverlight, my trusted sword. I have modified it a little and no one would recognize it as mine. I want you to have it."
He smiled seeing the boy looking stunned. He held his little hands and placed his sword in his hands.
"Remember, the greatness of a sword is not dependent on how sharp it is or how many enemies it slew. It is what you defend with the sword that makes the sword great. Be mindful that no one serves you but it is you who serves your people. That would keep your pride at bay. And always be mindful of your intentions. When you use your power to further your own agenda at the expense of the people you serve, that is the day you lose your qualification to wear the crown. It is the day you should step down. Otherwise, you will do fine..."
Maximus said and walked away. Marcus was still stunned to say anything, but even in his bewilderment, he listened to every word Maximus said. And he wrote each word in his heart.
"I will follow your advice, Your Majesty," he whispered. He bowed his head in the direction Maximus went. He cannot speak of him as his emperor to others, but Maximus will forever be the true Emperor of his heart.
Alexandra opened the portal and sent Marcus back to his home. He didn’t fail to mention that his mother is greatly improved after having her medicine and their home is happy. Alexandra was happy. Growing up in a happy home is very important. He will succeed well in his life and will be a good King.
"Is it that hard for you to smile for that boy, Maximus?" Alexandra asked after he left.
"Look who my wife is worried about! She’s worried about another man!" he picked her up and before she said anything in return, pressed his lips on hers. Their kiss deepened as he carried her to their bedroom.
