Survive As The Brute's Wife-Chapter 190: The Other Soul
Maximus was not very impressed when she asked him to promise that he won’t meet Arioch again. But she’s been saying a lot of things and he wanted to know the whole story behind it. He didn’t think that she got so serious about this issue merely to stop him from confronting or bragging to Arioch. There should be more to it.
"Hmm..." Alexandra blinked her eyes open. She wanted to talk to him about it before she fell asleep. She was so happy thinking about it and her tiredness went away.
"My first time around in this world..." Alexandra smiled. Her hands gently caressed his eyebrows which were furrowed.
He relaxed by the gentleness of her hands. He wanted to look at her face and so he scooted down to be on eye level with her. Alexandra told him everything she was shown about their past lives.
Maximus could not believe what he was hearing. "It’s..."
Impossible!
He wanted to say. What is the possibility that he was the first of the Lukyan lineage and he was in love with her even in his first life too?
But is it really impossible?
"We were separated, Maximus..." her eyes clouded. "By none other than...my father! The first time, you were insecure that you were a human. Using your insecurity and telling a lie, my father kept you from me... I thought you never loved me when you were made to forget about your love for me... And consecutively, we were separated. Wasn’t that cruel?" she asked.
"It was..." he hugged her closely.
He had no way to confirm if what she says is the case truthfully. But if... If that was the case, and that was his story, then he endured a lot to be where he is—as her husband.
In fact, that would explain a lot.
He remembered her screaming at him saying that he had a child with another woman. That must have been her memory from their first life. And she might have remembered that because...
It was then Maximus realized that she has a lot to speak of. She is speaking about his past life, but she didn’t tell him how she came across everything.
"How did you remember it?" he asked. She didn’t remember this many details from her previous life before.
"I saw it all, Max," Alexandra said. "I was shown this all..." she added. "I saw the tree of life and... Do you know? My father—the Dragon King, is not the one who created everything. It was... the creator... And..."
Alexandra explained everything she was shown by the creator.
"There is not going to be reincarnation?" Maximus asked as he was surprised. "So what will happen to our souls when we die? I was told that souls are eternal..." he asked.
"I am not sure. But the Creator said that he has a place for them. When I asked how life will go on, the Creator admonished me for not believing that he can create an infinite number of souls by his word alone and there would be no need for reincarnation." Alexandra felt goosebumps on her skin as she reminisced about her meeting with the Creator.
Maximus could only understand a little, but he didn’t ask about it to her because he didn’t care.
"Wait... if there won’t be reincarnation, what will be of us?" he asked.
If she could take control of her life and death, they had a chance that they might meet in the next life. But if that is not happening, then...
"This is our only life and we won’t get another chance to-"
Before she finished talking, he hugged her closer. Now he understood why she wanted him to make that promise. She doesn’t want him to waste the rest of his life thinking about him.
"He promised me offspring and blessings, Maximus..." Alexandra hugged him. "And I... We can age together..."
"We can?" Maximus asked. Alexandra nodded her head happily. He pulled her closer to his chest. "Sleep... you look tired."
He started patting her back gently and within some seconds she fell asleep. He didn’t know what he should feel about Alexandra aging with him.
«She cannot die, right? How can she die? She should live forever!»
He had a lot of visions. Speaking of visions... he hasn’t talked to her about Calantar. But he can wait for it.
He realized the visions Calantar had shown him were all possibilities and not the only outcome. Since only that vision repeated, he assumed that it was the only possible outcome. And in his stupidity, he believed everything Calantar showed him.
«Guess she was not a trustworthy person!»
The night passed and the day came. Maximus and Alexandra spent the time together talking. Alexandra told him everything that happened after she left him. She talked about what her plans were, how much she could do, and how many plans have been changed. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
Maximus listened to her. And as always, he was impressed with her. Since it was her, she was able to do this much. Another person would have caved under this sort of pressure. Only his wife is this powerful and smart.
And she talked about the "other soul" that was living inside her. It was not some other soul as he predicted. Who else can live in his precious wife’s body other than her?
But her explanation made him heartbroken.
After he met her that day, she was physically abused to the extreme. She was beaten to a pulp and was starved for days on end because she ended up "seducing a Prince". Unable to bear the suffering, she did something no human can do—she split her soul.
She did the split unevenly. A majority of her soul and hence the majority of her consciousness were locked deep under. But the body needs a soul to survive. And hence she left only a little part of her soul with the will to live on the surface.
That part of her soul—the one she named "Wispy" was the one who did everything to survive. She stayed silent and endured everything so that she could survive. That resilient part of her soul cultivated raw vegetables necessary for her survival, kept her head down, and did what was wanted of her to survive.
«If only I went back to her earlier, she wouldn’t have suffered...»
Maximus was filled with guilt. But looking at her clear eyes that were filled to the brim with happiness, he decided to let go of his guilt.
It’s all over... All their troubles are over. Only happiness lies ahead for them.
That day, he watched as he plowed the field, Alexandra talking to someone. He knew he is a messenger from Lord Zoros and they are discussing something regarding politics.
He started plowing the field. He didn’t want to think about politics anymore. He just wanted to spend the time with her. These days, he started working in the field. She would help him and at times she would leave him to take care of the Kingdom. She tried to talk to him about it, but he truly was not interested in even knowing about it.
He placed his hand on his forehead and squinted his eyes. It was noon and the sun was directly above making his eyes hurt. He saw her walking towards him and her face didn’t look fine. He dropped everything and ran to her.
"What happened?" he asked. "Lexa, are you feeling ill?"
She didn’t answer him immediately. And it made his heart pound. He could understand that she has bad news to tell him.
"No...I am fine..." Alexandra held his hand. "I got sad news right now. Maximus, Theodora went to the Temple of the Dragon King in the mountains and set herself on fire. The entire building got burnt. The Temple... is gone..." she pressed her lips.
Seeing his wide eyes, she added. "And your mother too have..."
Maximus staggered a couple of steps back. Alexandra hugged him.
"Did they find her body? Did they confirm it was her?" Maximus asked.
"They found her belongings along with a burnt corpse of a woman. It was her as confirmed by the Royal Coroner," Alexandra said.
She was surprised to see the relief on Maximus’ face. She thought he would at least feel a little sad about his mother’s passing. But he didn’t.
"It’s good that she is gone," he mumbled rather inaudibly. But Alexandra heard him.
[Yeah, maybe...]
Alexandra was not that worried about Theodora’s death. She made her bed and lay on it. She didn’t have to be consumed with the thirst for power and hurt others. But she did and till the end, she did what she wanted to do.
It is a relief, to be honest.
But with the Temple gone, she wondered what her father would do. And she did think about the Creator’s hand in this incident.
