Chapter 66: SysDi 66: The Valrepite Manor 5

Silence enveloped them and Evan did not want to break it. If there is something that Sir Theobald wanted to talk about, he would have to begin. Evan is not going to start asking.

He wonders what else he needs to talk to Evan about. Sir Theobald was able to tell him that he would need to observe and look after Spire, his daughter. They had already gone through the specifics in the study. That is all there is to it, right?

Why is he being treated extra better than the rest then?

Evan has his own, spacious room that is maybe as big as his entire childhood home combined, with the chandelier thing that every other room he had access, had. He has a soft bed that is much bigger than he is that he would probably never even outgrow in his entire life.

Spire personally came to fetch him with a driver from his parents’ home hours away here in Xertle City and in their manor. She didn’t have to, because it doubles the time of house to and fro, but she did.

She never even mentioned what time she left! It must have been earlier than when Evan wakes up in the morning.

He is also eating good food! The type of food that he only saw in occasion or if his parents was able to acquire extra.

Even if he is not versed with etiquette that every noble family is privy to, he knows that sitting closer to the head table meant something very important. Not to mention that he is sitting on a seat immediately on the left of the head table, right across Sir Theobald’s own daughter.

What importance that meant, Evan didn’t know it yet.

But it has to mean something.

Evan should just be treated like the driver, or maybe the very same servant that he has waiting behind him and on his every request.

He has questions, but he didn’t want to speak out of turn. No matter how curious he is, his parents had taught him patience.

So, he will wait.

Evan didn’t need to wait long, it seems like. He was expecting to have the talk after dinner itself just like what Evan’s family does back home, but that is not the case. Halfway through the meal, Sir Theobald wiped his lips with a white cloth.

"We have talked in the study in broad strokes." Sir Theobald began. "However, I know it was vague at best. As a thank you, I am welcoming you to my family."

Evan heard utensils clang against ceramic. When he looks on his plate, it was his own spoon and across him, Spire’s fork too.

"Come again, father? I must have misheard what you said." Spire says, one of her fox ears standing more on attention that is closer to Sir Theobald.

"I am serious, Evan." Sir Theobald says, ignoring Spire for now. "I intend to help you enroll in Stardust Academy should you pass. Do you know what that means?"

Evan shook his head. "I’ll be honest, I don’t really know what that means. My parents said that it would be a great honor to be accepted under a noble family’s wing. I never asked about it more since I’m too young. I only assumed it’s working for the nobles and getting protection?"

Sir Theobald hums. "Mostly, yes. It depends on which noble you ask. They prefer to take those that had established themselves in the field of magic already, students fresh from magic school. Maybe adults that another noble family already had. They are recruited and then they work for that noble family and be paid with salary and protection."

Evan nods his head along as Sir Theobald explains. So, his first assumption was right. It is mostly adults that noble family gets. It makes sense. Why would the nobles care about those that they didn’t see as someone strong enough to protect them at all?

It seems like those that they take under their wing were also people that represents their name. If the person they got is seen as weak, other nobility would look down on them, and for good reason.

Sir Theobald continues. "For us here, I help those I see with potential. Give them a means to get into the magic school they passed the requirements for. They are all my children in everything other than name or blood. Whether they come back in the future to repay back the help I gave them, that is fully up to them.

I’m satisfied enough to help. Most especially, those I owe."

Evan nods his head. So, that is why he is being treated as if he is also nobility here. It just meant that technically, he is under Sir Theobald’s family now. His future studies is now fully supported by the Valrepite’s.

He is able to have his support even before Evan could take the Entrance Exams. It is the greatest honor he has ever received.

"Of course, if you don’t pass Stardust Academy, it will be difficult for you to do what your tasks are." Sir Theobald says, the implication clear only to Spire and Evan. "But I’m sure you will find a way."

Evan finally realized what they were doing here. They were talking about this entire thing out here in the open for the servants to hear. They didn’t talk that long in the study, but they were able to have the privacy needed got Sir Theobald to tell him what Evan needs to do once he passed the Entrance Exams for Stardust Academy. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚

It really would be difficult if he didn’t pass. That’s more motivation for him.

"Thank you for the opportunity. I will not let you down." Evan bows his head a little.

Sir Theobald waves his right hand dismissively. "Please, Evan, raise your head! This is nothing. We will have a proper feast tomorrow. For now, we finish this simple dinner and you and Spire rest."
