Chapter 48: They’re all in a straight line...

Selene POV

"If it’s something I can do," I shrugged.

"Don’t spend the night in Noah’s room," he said quietly. "I know he wants you to get pregnant for him and a whole lot, don’t do it, Selene. Perhaps, after you’ve but don’t,".

I studied his face for a long time, trying to understand what was going through his mind.

"Is there a specific reason you want me not to?" I asked.

"Aside from how disrespectful I think it is, if you’re not going to mate with your fated mate on the night of the fool moon, then you shouldn’t be with any other person,".

"That sounds pretty restricting, Xavier. How would you feel about it if you were in my shoes and I gave you such rules? Noah is going to be my husband one way or the other and there’s nothing you can do about it. When we finally become one, I plan to fully submit to him. My body and all...".

"Let’s see how long that will last," he smirked "Just don’t sleep with him while you’re here,".

Then he rose to his feet and scooped the girls into his arms as he left the room.

That night, when we arrived at the pack house, I laid awake on the bed, staring at the ceiling begging for sleep. I tried all the methods in the books I knew but nothing was forthcoming. Sighing, I crept out of bed, decided to go for a stroll to see if it’ll help me sleep. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

As I came out of the house and decided to go towards the garden. The air smelt fresh, everywhere was quiet and peaceful and the moon shone brightly across the sky. By tonight, it will be bigger than it seemed now.

I closed my eyes, allowing the soft breeze to caress my face, nostalgia filled me for a moment, this would be my last day at the pack here. After that, I would have to submit to another man for the rest of my life if I’m lucky.

I felt my wolf prancing around, urging me to run through the forests. In reality, I’ve never done that. After my wolf became stronger, I’ve changed just once and it was because I needed to know if it was still there.

The urge to change into my wolf, heightened and it felt like if I didn’t do her bidding, she would literally tear through me and do it herself. Sighing, I turned in the direction of the small forest just behind the garden. That was where everyone would assembly and we would start running from here.

As I got closer to the mouth of the opening, a light suddenly swept the area and instinctively, I hit the ground, rolling into a nearby shrub. I crept towards a small wall and leaned my back against it as I felt my heart pounding wildly in my chest.

Maybe it was the guards on patrol... I tried to assure myself when the light swept again for the second time and then the third time. Then five minutes lapsed and it didn’t come up again. Hoisting myself to my kneels, I peered over the short wall at the direction of the forest wondering if it was just routine checks.

But I had a bad feeling about this and I never ignore my instincts. While I watch, my eyes caught a small figure that emerged from the pack house. From where I stood, the figure was wrapped in a white flowing gown with hair that reached her waist... it was a woman no doubt.

I watched as the woman hurried towards the forest, right in the direction that the light had come from. Almost to get into it, the light suddenly came up again but this time, it didn’t sweep through the area, it pointed steadily at the woman and I froze with shock as I recognized the blond hair.

It was Belinda.

The light went off and she slipped into the forest. I rose to my feet, as excitement surged through me. Whatever it was that Belinda was going for didn’t seem legitimate. A part of me wanted to run back to the pack house to call Xavier but I decided against it. By the time we’ll return, she’ll be long gone and I would seem like a liar.

I came out of the clearing I had hidden before and crept cautiously towards the forest feeling my heart pounding as I moved. At the mouth, I peered in the darkness, thankful for my night vision which was twice clearer than an average wolf and everything seemed normal.

There was no trace of Belinda nor the person who was swinging the light. Taking one final look behind me and the pack house, I entered the forest. Immediately I entered, all my senses awakened.

I could hear the crickets chirping, the frogs croaking in the distance... even the tiniest of insects flying echoed in my ears. My vision cleared more, lighting my path. Belinda’s scent wafted up to me and immediately, I turned to my left; she had gone in that direction.

I wanted to question why I was suddenly so aware of the environment but I was too invested to stop to think. As I continued towards the path, I suddenly heard voices.

Pausing, I walked stealthily towards a large boulder I saw lying on the ground and dived behind it.

"Why are you always so stupid?" a man’s voice rang with rage "I ask you to do one simple thing and you keep failing. What’s wrong with you?"

"I’m sorry," I heard Belinda’s subdued voice "It was already too late by the time I returned. There’s not much I can do to. He won’t even meet with me. I think something has changed between them. I’m not so sure of it, but I can swear with everything in me that something has definitely changed.

"Oh please!" the man’s snapped "You’re not like them... how long will I tell you this? Why won’t you use your gifts?"

"It’s not working," Belinda shouted "Nothing is working. I’ve tried everything I could but...".

The words had barely left her mouth when the man slapped her across her chin. Belinda reeled with pain and stumbled to the ground holding her smarting cheeks. My head whipped up as I tried to see who the man was but he had his back to me.

My heart squeezed with pity as I saw tears roll down Belinda’s cheeks.

"You slapped me?" she sounded more puzzled than she was hurt "You promised you’d never do this again,".

"And I’ll do it over and over again!" the man shouted and reached for the neck of her dress pulling her to her feet "You’ll go back and try out one more time. Else..." he chuckled dryly "I’ll kill you myself,".

Then he threw her to the side and disappeared towards the darkness. Belinda laid sprawled on the ground, as her body shook with sobs. Where I was sitting, I felt pity... I’ve never seen her like this. The Belinda I knew always seemed to have everything figured out.

Who would have thought that someone treated her like this? Who was the man that was speaking to her moments ago?

We remained there for almost thirty minutes before she hoisted herself up. As she made to leave, the man returned. In the darkness, I could make out a tall, handsome man with a scar that ran along the right side of his face.

Scars usually make people look ugly... but for the man, it seemed to enhance his already beautiful features, making him look like he was posing for a sexy male magazine. As soon as he returned, he immediately grabbed Belinda’s waist, pulling her to him as he hugged her from behind.

"I’m sorry," I heard him croon. "I didn’t mean to hit you. I was frustrated and angry,".

"You shouldn’t harm me then," Belinda’s eyes filled up with tears again. You claim to love me but all you do is hurt me. You don’t care the lengths to which I sacrifice myself. Is that all I am to you? Just some tool to fulfill your desires? Do I mean more than that to you?"

"Darling don’t say that," the man sighed resting his jaw on her shoulders "You know I love you, it’s just that everything is taking so long. We were almost close,".

"Maybe you should just give up," I heard Belinda tell him "Something doesn’t feel right at this point. When I checked the reading of the sky today, I discovered something strange... there’s an unsual alignment with the elements and the moon. They’re all in straight line,".

"What does it mean?" The man’s gaze darkened as he asked.

"I have no idea. The last time something like this happened, a curse was born. I’m worried, maybe we shouldn’t be doing all of this in the first place. The curse, Xavier, Selene and even his daughter... those people are not who they seem they are...".
