The Alpha's Omega Mate-Chapter 149: The big bad wolf.
~Dahlia’s POV~
"Where is she now?" I couldn’t help but ask her, and now, even though I tried to feign a brave front, I couldn’t control the trembling in my hands, and the way my knees had suddenly turned into jello.
Amara sniffled, wiping some of the tears away from her face. She grabbed my hands again and shook her head, her expression wild, the fear oozing from her palpable. She croaked; "Let’s run before they find out I disturbed her. You know that Alpha Kai doesn’t want anyone in there, and I went in?"
"Where is she?" I asked again, ignoring her words. Hell, she doesn’t even know half of what she was saying.
"She opened her eyes. And then she closed it back." Amara choked out. "I woke her up." She grabbed my hands in hers again, her eyes looking pleadingly up at me as she whispered; "mommy, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to. I don’t know what to do."
I shuffled away from her as if physically hit, my heart racing so much, I feared it would pop out of my chest.
But despite this, and despite my mind screaming at me that this wasn’t supposed to be that deep, I nodded, before pulling my daughter into a crushing hug. Amara on the other hand wrapped her arms around me innocently, and seizing the opportunity, I carried her to our bed, helped her into it and took a step back.
"Can you do me a favor, honey?" I asked softly, and she nodded. Good. "Can you stay here while I go check things out? I want to see how she is. I want to know if she’s still there, and if she isn’t, I’ll try to iron this out with Alpha Kai, okay?"
"Okay." She mumbled and I smiled at her, not missing the way she couldn’t even bring herself to return it.
Deep down, I was confused... not just confused but amazed. And do you know what makes this even funnier? The fact that my daughter has no idea about what she’s just done.
Her four-year old mind is so bothered about the prospect of getting into trouble for stepping into that room that she couldn’t bring herself to realise what she’s done in the process... how she’d just healed someone who’s been in a coma for as long as two years— and that it was something most aged and experienced healers couldn’t do.
And I couldn’t help but wonder if she’s just like me... or better.
Hades, how come we both have these weirdness that we cannot control? How have you blessed or cursed us with powers that should be hidden?
I turned away from her but just as I reached the door, I spun back around to face her, my expression serious. "I hope you aren’t lying to me, baby?" I asked her softly and she nodded frantically.
"You really saw her open her eyes?" I continued, and she nodded again.
I sighed. "Okay. Remain here until I come for you okay? Don’t cry too, okay? You’ll not get in any trouble as long as I am here."
"Okay mommy." She answered, wiping her face, and I smiled one more time at her before stepping out of the room.
As I walked down the hallway, down the stairs and into that creepy corridor leading to the sacred room, my heartbeat accelerated. My already wobbly legs shook even more and my hands secreted so much sweat, I felt like a tap running over.
It took a lot of courage from my end to open the door when I arrived in front of it, and as soon as I twisted the knob, I immediately screamed out in fright because before me was a woman.
A woman clad in a white shabby dress. A woman with skin as pale as the surface of the moon. A woman whose eyes were drilling into my skull like tiny lasers.
My heart plummeted. Amara wasn’t lying!
And now, Ms Elodie was before me, sitting on the bed and waiting like someone straight out of the land of the dead— and that wasn’t even a metaphor.
She tilted her head to the side just as I stepped into the room, and after a moment of awkward silence, she finally asked; "Who are you?"
I gulped. Who do I say I am when she doesn’t even know me to begin with?
So instead of saying anything about myself, I simply shook my head, waving in front of her as I said; "I am no one important. Just wait here, let me go get Kai." And the mention of Kai’s name, her face lit up.
A small smile formed on her lips and she sat up quickly—too quickly, she didn’t even seem like someone who had been wining and dining with the moon goddess and her subordinates only moments ago.
She didn’t look like someone who’s been half dead for two years now.
Shaking my head to rid myself of these thoughts, I rushed out of the room in the direction that I’d seen Alpha Kai only several minutes ago, but as I went, I couldn’t help but ponder over what I would tell him happened... or what lie I would spin to him.
Gods, is it even reasonable to lie about it?
I do not know for how long I walked or in what direction I was headed, but by the time I finally came through, I found myself before Alpha Kai, my face pressed painfully into his chest because I had walked right into him die to how deep I’d been in thought.
He smirked at me, exposing his dimples and drawled; "You can’t live without me any more?"
"Oh."
"What are you doing here, Dahlia sweetheart? Do you find it unbearable to be far from me now?" He asked with a smile, and when I still wouldn’t respond, he jokingly added; "don’t worry, the feeling is mutual."
Behind him, a maidservant chuckled before rushing away like she’d just seen something intimate. By the gods, I wanted to duck my head in shame too. I wanted to bury my head into the ground and remain there for all of eternity. But I cannot.
Especially not when there was something pretty important to talk about.
Unconsciously, I fidgeted, fiddling with my dress; and I didn’t even notice this until Alpha Kai plucked my hands into his and brought it up to his face, forcing me to look at him in the process. My breath hitched.
"What is it?"
Now, the cat’s got my tongue. I stumbled around words for a moment, my heart hammering against my chest with each passing second. It took me a moment to finally catch my breath and when I did, I let out a shaky breath, muttering; "I have something to show you."
"I have something to show you too." He retorted, wiggling his eyebrows suggestively, and in annoyance, I slapped at his arm.
"No. I really do have something to show you!" I snapped, and with that, I grabbed at his hand and began to drag him away.
Usually, Alpha Kai was way stronger than I was— or maybe not— but he followed me without hesitation, trudging behind me like a child that’s been promised a treat.
We had just arrived in the eerily dark corridor when I felt him stiffen infinitesimally, but still, he didn’t stop walking. I whispered; "I’ll explain what happened to you later, for now, you just have to see this."
"See what?" he croaked out, his voice suddenly hoarse, but I didn’t respond. I simply dragged him into the room, freezing again when I didn’t find her on the bed this time, because now, she was standing by the door, her eyes widening when she noticed Kai’s presence.
She drawled; "Kai?"
And I swear I God, I saw the big bad wolf, the almighty Alpha Kai stumble backward in shock.
I saw the exact moment his walls came tumbling down and the guarded expression on his face collapse before his knees came crashing down.
My heart lurched in my chest when he began to sob uncontrollably but that didn’t stop me from slinking away from them when his sister rushed to hug him too, crying as she wrapped her arms around his neck.
And gods, I felt happy. I felt proud and I had this irresistible urge to go back to my daughter, to pull her into a hug too because she deserved it.
And that was exactly what I ended up doing.
