The Alpha's Omega Mate-Chapter 150: Elodie:::
~Dahlia’s POV~
For the rest of the day, the house was plunged into a state of festivity. Guests from far and wide came for a visit, men and women clad in silk robes and doused in expensive perfumes graced the fortress, all bearing gifts for the awakened princess.
The woman who was currently nowhere to be found.
My eyes darted around the house and through the pouring guests for a sign of her, for the sight of her usually beautiful pale skin standing out amongst the crowd; But the more I sought out for her, the more I realized that she wasn’t here... that she would never come, and I guess Alpha Kai realized this too because his once happy mood quickly deflated, leaving him weary and standing by a corner of the room with his Beta standing beside him whilst whispering something to him that only they could hear.
I watched as his frown deepened, and deciding that he probably needs me now, I made my way through the crowded room to him. However, as soon as he saw me approaching, he beamed a smile my way. He even further shocked me when he pulled me into a hug, his head resting above my head as he whispered;
"I think I’ve made a mistake, Dahlia honey."
By now, I should be used to his several nicknames. I should be used to the way he referred to me with any endearing term he could think of; but weirdly, I wasn’t. They still managed to make me blush fiercely like a teenager, still managed to elicit traitorous emotions in me and made the dragonflies in my stomach go wild whenever I heard them.
I smiled up at him whilst shaking my head, and dropping my voice so that only he could hear me, I whispered; "We both know you didn’t... even though I have no idea what you’re talking about."
Alpha Kai chuckled dryly. He then gestured to the bustling house before turning to face me. He explained; "I threw a party to celebrate my sister’s recovery... but she wouldn’t even come out. She doesn’t even want to see the guests, or me. I know that she hates the attention, but I just... I wasn’t thinking."
"I understand how you feel." I mused, causing Alpha Kai to roll his eyes when Xander nodded in agreement. "But I don’t think that’s you messing up. I think she’ll understand that you were simply very excited, you had to pull all of this—"
"I think she’s mad that Orion isn’t here." he snapped suddenly interrupting me.
And as soon as I heard that name, I stilled. The blood pumping through my veins ran cold. I could vividly remember the conversation I’d unconsciously eavesdropped on that day between him and Alpha Zarek, but because he never brought up the subject, I never asked.
But now, he was bringing it up, and I couldn’t help but notice how Beta Xander’s face suddenly darkened. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚
— a bad topic for him, I guess.
"But why?" I asked meekly, feigning confusion even though I had my own theories. Even though I suspected that she was the mother of his child... his wife.
Alpha Kai sighed before turning away to glance around the room, and when he noticed that no one was paying any attention to us, he leaned forward, dropping his voice until it was nothing but a fierce whisper as he said; "They were married."
Hades, that was old news. It was something I’d always felt in my guts, but I don’t know why hearing it out loud... hearing my suspicions being confirmed... made me freeze
Maybe it was because he’d asked for my hand in marriage... maybe it was because I felt like a traitor even though it wasn’t even my fault.
I gulped. "Then why isn’t he here then?"
"Because I do not want him here. I don’t want to see anyone from Shadowfang pack in my pack; well besides their Alpha, and that’s because we’ve been friends for a while... before everything happened."
My day was going from bad to worse and he didn’t even realize it. My heart somersaulted in my chest a million and one times with each word he spoke, and to make matters worse, he wasn’t stopping. He didn’t even seem like he wanted to, so I had to put my hand against his chest, stopping him as I whispered;
"We can talk about it later, can’t we? I can’t guarantee that there isn’t someone listening in on us right now."
"Yeah, you’re right." He sighed tiredly, looking away, "I just wish she would let me explain."
"And I think you’re just being hard on yourself." I supplied without missing a beat.
Alpha Kai immediately turned to me with wide eyes, and so did his Beta, Xander. I could see the conflicting feelings in his eyes, could feel the slight shaking of his hands. He was anxious right now. Paranoid even. And I should be helping him not giving him more reasons to feel even more antsy.
I shrugged dismissively, feigning nonchalance even though I cared so much it hurt; and I continued; "She just woke up from a two year slumber, you shouldn’t expect her to be a good host right now."
"But—"
"The fact that she isn’t here doesn’t mean she doesn’t want to come. It may just be that she no longer knows how all of these usually play out anymore, so I guess that you’ll need to give her a little time."
Alpha Kai sighed before turning to Xander who looked so satisfied, one would think he’d just won a lottery, and then he nodded. "Okay."
We settled into a comfortable silence afterwards, one that was soon shattered when Alpha Kai suddenly turned to me and asked; "What were you doing there?"
I froze then cocked my eyebrow at him in confusion; "Doing where?"
"Why were you there when she woke up? How did you notice she was awake if you’re supposed to be up in your room and not in hers?"
As more of his words slipped out, so did my heart pound frantically against my ribcage like a bird struggling to be let out of its confines. I gasped, my hands suddenly going clammy. I was just about to open my mouth, to spill out the first excuse that I could think of when suddenly, inaudible murmurs rippled through the crowd.
The people before us dispersed like the story of— was it Moses that parted the Red Sea in the Bible or Micah?
Anyways... whatever!
The crowd parted as a very sleek, very beautiful young woman stepped into the grand hall. I know I am a woman but damn, my breath hitched as I took in her sight... drank it in even, my eyes trailing along the delicate seams of her ethereal green dress.
I gently jabbed at Alpha Kai’s ribs and muttered; "We’ll talk about it later. But for now, your sister is here. Go to her."
Alpha Kai smiled—but not at me. His eyes glazed with tears as he stood rooted in place while he watched her approach us, blissfully ignoring my advice to walk up to her instead.
"Kai... Xander!" She greeted with a smile when she reached us and I smiled softly, almost feeling left out before quickly slinking away to give them some quiet time.
However, I had just taken a few steps when Lady— or Princess Elodie as the case may be— called out to me, her voice sharp but with a tinge of something... something that felt oddly familiar.
She croaked; "Wait."
I froze before slowly turning around to face her. "Is there a problem, my lady?"
She shook her head. "When I first saw you, I wasn’t sure I was seeing things right. I first thought I had finally slipped into the land of the dead because I’d always believed you were dead..." her voice trailed off, and to my utmost shock, tears streamed freely down her face.
"But after seeing you again... and again, I knew it had to be true. I knew I wasn’t wrong. So now, I am asking not because I am not sure, but because I want to be proven right. Are you Nyx’ara?"
I froze. My eyes widened and a sudden chill ran down my spine.
My reaction was probably all that she needed to know the truth as she gasped, slapping her hands over her mouth as more tears streamed down her face.
"You’re alive?" She screeched, her voice shaky. "I really cannot believe this!" She cried, and with that, pulled me into a crushing hug.
But I found her reaction oddly surprising. It made me frown in confusion, made my eyebrows twitch frustratedly but because I couldn’t pull away, I quietly decided to let her hug me until she finally had her full and leaned back, still holding my hands in hers.
"Am I supposed to know you personally?" I asked softly, confusedly, becoming even more confused when Alpha Kai smacked the top of his head. Elodie turned to him with a frown, her swollen eyes thinning into slits.
He drawled; "Elodie, yes, this is Nyx’ara but she goes by the name Dahlia now and she has no memories of her past... I mean, her past past before the fire."
"I remember the fire." I snapped but he simply ignored me, turning to face me moments afterwards.
"And Dahlia, this is Elodie, my sister. She also used to be your best friend, and you hers. You both were inseparable and insufferable before everything happened, but it’s not surprising that you do not remember her. You also didn’t recognise me when we first met." He said softly and I froze.
I felt like a bucket of icy water had been suddenly doused over my head, soaking through my dress. I am ashamed... bad... I felt like a terrible person.
And you know what was worse?
Elodie looked hurt.
She gently let go of my hands and stared at me like I had suddenly sprouted two heads, and now, the tears that streamed down her face came in torrents.
Oh gods no. Shit.
