Chapter 45: Chapter 045: Good, Drink the Medicine

"First a slap, and now a sweet treat?" Sienna Johnson was unimpressed.

"What?"

"Nothing." Sienna couldn’t explain certain things to Mai. In Mai’s view, a man hitting a woman wasn’t a big deal. But in the world Sienna originally came from, it was wrong, even illegal.

"Mai, hurry and drink your medicine. It’ll be even more bitter if it gets cold."

Sienna was terrified of taking medicine, especially bitter traditional medicine. She pushed the bowl away, spilling some of its contents. "I don’t want to drink it!"

Kiki tried to reason with her. "How can you not drink it? How will you get better if you don’t? Mai, be good and drink your medicine."

Sienna had been hurt by Adrian Desmond—not physically, but emotionally. She was a sensitive and proud woman, and he had wounded her pride.

In Adrian’s eyes, she was nothing more than a pet he kept, like a dog or a cat. He would play with her when she was obedient and whip her when she wasn’t.

"Does it even matter if I get better?" She looked as if she had given up on herself, making Kiki frown.

"Mai, you haven’t taken your medicine yet. Don’t go to sleep..."

Sienna lay down, her back to Kiki, gazing at the azure sea and sky outside the window. This place is a cage. Its breathtaking beauty can’t change that fact.

Adrian had just taken a call and stepped out for a moment. When he returned and learned Sienna had woken up, the heavy weight on his heart lifted. Sienna will never understand how terrified I was while she was unconscious. I’ve seen my share of life and death, but when it comes to her safety, I still feel fear.

When Kiki saw Adrian walk in, she said aggrievedly, "Sixth Master, Mai refuses to drink her medicine."

"Leave it and go," Adrian ordered.

"Yes!" Kiki didn’t dare disobey Adrian’s command. She placed the medicine on the table, glanced at Sienna, and then walked out.

Sienna stared blankly out the window, like a caged bird yearning for the blue sky. Adrian broke my wings, so I can never fly again.

Footsteps sounded behind her—Adrian’s footsteps. In just six months, I’ve memorized the sound of his steps. How terrifying.

"You’ve slept for a long time," he said in a low voice, sitting down on the edge of her bed.

Sienna remained silent.

"Now that you’re awake, drink your medicine."

She didn’t respond.

"I promise I won’t hit you again." He paused, then, thinking of her rebellious nature, added a condition, "As long as you don’t run away or deceive me anymore, I won’t hit you!"

Whatever Adrian said, Sienna ignored him. She lay on her side, her slender waist forming a graceful curve. His hand instinctively went to her soft waist. She’s lost weight again, he thought, his heart aching at the sight.

"Be good. Drink your medicine, then you can sleep."

She gave no reply.

"I have some difficult matters to handle right now. I promise, once I’ve dealt with them, I’ll take you... home. To see your father... and Teddy..." These were the people Sienna often spoke of and missed.

Sienna finally reacted. She turned her head to look at him and said, "I can go back by myself!"

"No!" Adrian refused without a second thought. I can’t possibly let her go back alone. Her heart isn’t with me. If I let her go, will she even want to come back?

Sienna sneered. "Sixth Master, you’re hardly sincere."

"I can’t trust you to go back alone!" She still has that fiancé. Who knows if their old feelings will reignite if she goes back?

"Is that so? Then I appreciate your concern, Sixth Master."

"Don’t call me Sixth Master. That’s what others call me. You can just call me by my name."

"I wouldn’t dare!" she said icily.

Adrian’s bloodshot eyes fixed on Sienna. She presented him with her cold, indifferent back, her rejection palpable. I worked so hard to warm her heart, and now it’s turned to stone again. Our fragile, hard-won connection has regressed to how it was at the beginning, if not worse.

"...I know you’re angry, but you were in the wrong this time. You shouldn’t have run away, and you shouldn’t have deceived me."

Sienna had already clearly explained why she ran away and deceived him. From her perspective, she wasn’t wrong. Not only that, but Adrian was the one who was outrageously in the wrong.

First, he had imprisoned her, which was illegal. She hadn’t committed any crime; she had the right to her personal freedom, the freedom to go wherever she pleased. But how had Adrian treated her? He had imprisoned her on this island, restricting her freedom.

"Mai, drink the medicine!" Adrian wasn’t a man who knew how to coax women. Lowering himself to speak to Sienna like this was already his biggest concession. If they both took a step back, things could be resolved amicably. But Sienna wouldn’t yield an inch.

Adrian slammed the medicine bowl down and roared, "Fine! If you don’t want to drink it, then don’t! If you get sick and die, you’ll have deserved it!"

Adrian stood up, strode out, and slammed the door behind him. The room instantly fell silent.

Sienna continued to gaze at the azure sea and sky outside, savoring the rare tranquility. I don’t want to see Adrian.

Xavier Young saw Adrian’s furious expression, walked over, and asked, "Sixth Master, has that woman upset you again?"

"Do you have too much free time lately, Xavier?" Adrian asked coldly.

Xavier couldn’t stand seeing Adrian treat Sienna well. Lately, Adrian hadn’t been eating or sleeping properly because of her. He looked haggard, with stubble on his chin and his clothes wrinkled. His light-colored T-shirt was even stained with medicine.

"Sixth Master, women can’t be coddled. Look, that woman Mai is walking all over you now. If you can’t bring yourself to do it, just hand her over to me. I guarantee that in a few days, she won’t dare to disrespect you again and will be completely submissive."

Adrian stared at Xavier Young, his dark eyes cold and unsettling, like a serpent’s. "Mai is my woman! I can treat her however I wish. But I will not allow anyone else to harm her!"

Walter Klein came rushing upstairs. Seeing Adrian, he quickened his pace and reported, "Sixth Master, bad news! Miss Carpenter is injured!"

Melanie Carpenter was Adrian’s fiancée.

Melanie was also Adrian’s cousin. When Adrian’s uncle and aunt passed away, they had entrusted their only beloved daughter, Melanie, to him. Adrian had sworn before them that he would take care of Melanie for the rest of his life.

"What happened?"

"An assassin tried to kill Miss Carpenter! It seems to be Maxwell Bradford’s men!"

Maxwell Bradford was one of Adrian’s enemies. Years ago, Adrian’s parents, uncles, aunts, and cousins—a total of thirty-four family members—had all been brutally murdered by a coalition of their enemies. Melanie’s family had also been caught in the crossfire. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel-com
