Chapter 83: Jane’s Arrest

The sharp, commanding voice of a man echoed through the quiet living room. "You are under arrest, Jane Johnson," he announced, pulling out a pair of shiny metal handcuffs from his belt. The cold, heavy words hung in the air, filling the room with tension.

Jane stood frozen, her heart pounding wildly in her chest. Her eyes widened in shock and fear as the man’s words sank into her mind. She couldn’t believe what she had just heard. Her legs felt weak, almost as if they might give out beneath her at any moment. She hadn’t expected this, not today, not ever.

Beside her, her mother, Mrs. Johnson, let out a sharp laugh, though her voice trembled slightly. It was the kind of laugh people gave when they were more scared than amused, trying to cover up their fear with anger. She stepped forward, glaring fiercely at the officers, her hands balling into fists at her sides.

"Arrest my daughter?" she repeated, her voice now louder and full of outrage. "How dare you come into my house and talk such nonsense! Who do you even think you are?" Her eyes blazed with defiance, but the crack in her voice was clear. Deep down, even her anger couldn’t fully hide the fear curling in her stomach.

Jane watched her mother carefully, her own fear growing with every word. She could hear the strain in her mother’s voice, and that scared her even more. Was this really happening? Had she been caught? Daniel, had told her everything would be alright. He had promised. But now, facing these men in uniform, those words felt like a lie. Panic slowly tightened around her chest. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

The longer she stood there, the clearer it became to Jane that she needed to act fast. She could see how focused the officers were on her mother, arguing and explaining themselves. Her mom’s loud voice had drawn all their attention, giving Jane a tiny window of hope. She knew this was her only chance to escape. If she stayed any longer, she would end up locked away behind cold steel bars.

She quietly shifted her weight, her heartbeat thundering in her ears, and began to turn her body away, inching toward the nearest exit. She thought she had moved unnoticed, but just as she was about to slip away, she felt a strong hand clamp tightly around her wrist.

The grip was firm, strong enough to make her stop in her tracks.

"And where do you think you’re going, young lady?" a deep voice asked from behind her. It was Kevin. He had been watching her the entire time, sharper than the others. While the other officers had been busy with her mother, Kevin had noticed her every subtle move.

Jane slowly turned around, her eyes wide and filled with both surprise and fear. When she finally faced him, she gasped softly, recognizing the familiar face. "Kevin?" she whispered, barely able to speak the name. His expression was smug and playful, with a mischievous smile tugging at the corner of his lips. It was clear he had been expecting this. Jane’s heart sank. There was no escape now.

"Oh yes, baby, that’s me," Kevin replied with a strange, twisted smile stretched across his face. His voice was calm, but there was a sharpness to his tone that sent a cold shiver down Jane’s spine. His expression wasn’t the familiar one she used to know, instead, it was filled with a mocking kind of satisfaction, as if he had been waiting for this moment all along.

Without wasting a second, Kevin firmly grabbed Jane’s hands and handed them over to the waiting police officers. The cold metal of the handcuffs clicked shut around her wrists, locking her in place. The sound of the cuffs snapped her fully into the terrifying reality of the situation. Her heart sank as she stared at Kevin, her voice shaking with a mix of anger and betrayal.

"How can you do this to me?" she cried out, her voice loud and filled with disbelief.

Kevin, still wearing that odd smile, tilted his head slightly to the side, studying her as if she were nothing more than an object of curiosity. After a moment, he straightened his head and let out a cold chuckle. "And who the hell do you think you are that you shouldn’t be arrested when you’ve done something wrong?" he answered, his voice sharp and emotionless.

Turning back to the officers, Kevin gave them a small nod. "Take her away," he ordered, stepping aside to clear their path. The officers were about to move Jane toward the door when, all of a sudden, her mother sprang forward, blocking their way. Her hands trembled, but her eyes were fierce and determined.

"You’re taking my daughter nowhere!" she shouted, her voice cracking under the weight of her emotions. "Where is your authorization? Where is the arrest warrant?" she demanded, shaking with rage.

Kevin, as if expecting the question, calmly reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper. Without speaking, he handed it to Jane’s mother, who snatched it from his hand and unfolded it. Her eyes scanned the document, and her face slowly went pale. The strength in her voice seemed to fade away as she whispered, almost in denial, "No... my daughter isn’t a murderer."

Kevin’s expression hardened. His patience was running thin. "But she almost killed someone," he snapped back, "and that is still a crime, whether she succeeded or not."

Jane stood there helpless, tears pooling in her eyes and rolling down her cheeks. Reality was sinking in fast. There was no way out this time. She couldn’t believe she wouldn’t be going home that night. She had never even stepped inside a police station before, and now she was about to be taken there like a criminal. The thought of it crushed her heart.

Desperate, she looked at Kevin, her voice trembling and full of pleading. "Kevin, please... help me. I’ll pay you, I’ll give you anything you want. Just don’t let them take me to the police station. Please, I beg you," she cried, her eyes red and swollen with tears.

But Kevin only shook his head slowly, the look in his eyes full of disgust and disappointment. "You should have thought about all this before you chose to go after your innocent step-sister," he said coldly. "She was bedridden for days because of you, while you went on eating, sleeping, and living like nothing happened. You didn’t care about the pain you put her through. Now it’s time for you to face the consequences."

Jane lowered her head, her body trembling, as the officers led her away, her mother standing frozen in shock. The weight of her choices had finally caught up with her.

"Please, just take her out of this place!" Kevin ordered sharply, his voice filled with cold disgust. His words were like the final nail in the coffin for Jane, who stood trembling, her heart breaking as the police officers tightened their grip on her arms.

Jane’s voice cracked with desperation as she begged, her tear-filled eyes darting around the room, even her mother, who had just moments before been shouting and fighting for her freedom, now stood frozen and speechless, unable to believe this nightmare was real.

As the officers began pulling her away, Jane’s tearful eyes landed on a familiar face, "Daniel?" She called out.

He stood across the room, close to the corner, his face turning away from her as if the sight of her caused him pain. He avoided her gaze completely, pretending not to see her, acting like he didn’t even know her.

The confusion in Jane’s heart deepened. Through her tears, she cried out, her voice full of disbelief, "You? You’re with them too? You’re helping them arrest me?"

Daniel stiffened at the sound of her voice. His hands trembled slightly as he quickly pulled out a handkerchief, dabbing at his face, trying to hide the fear and guilt spreading across his features. He was afraid Kevin would notice his reaction, afraid Jane might say something that would link him to her , something that would put him in trouble too.

Forcing his voice to stay steady, Daniel adjusted his expression and looked at her with a cold, distant face. "Miss Jane, comport yourself and follow the law," he said, his tone flat and emotionless, as though she were nothing more than a stranger.

Jane felt her knees go weak. The betrayal cut deeper than any wound. She let out a heartbroken scream, her voice rising above everything else in the room. "No, you can’t do this! No!" she cried as the policemen began leading her toward the door.

Her mother, snapping out of her shock for just a moment, rushed toward her, though she couldn’t stop the officers from taking her daughter away. Fighting back her own tears, she called out to her. "Baby, I’m coming for you! We’re going to get you out, okay? Don’t be scared, just hold on for me, alright?" she said, her voice shaking with emotion as Jane was dragged out of the house.

The room slowly fell quiet. Now only Kevin and Daniel remained, standing in the empty living room. Kevin’s sharp eyes remained fixed on Daniel, watching him closely. Something about Daniel’s behavior had caught his attention. The unease in Daniel’s face was impossible to miss.
