The Cat-Like Miss Preston: Mr. CEO begs for Reconciliation!-Chapter 116: I Came to Pick You Up, I Miss You
The man glanced at her, opened his mouth as if to speak, but then hesitated.
The nurse standing nearby said, "Dr. Quinn, you should thank this gentleman. Your father was in a car accident, and he happened to be driving by and brought him here."
"Otherwise, your father might have..."
Listening, Chloe Preston looked toward the man and said with sincere gratitude, "Thank you for saving my father."
The man froze for a moment, his voice indifferent. "No need to thank me. I just happened to be passing by."
As he spoke, he avoided her gaze again, as if he didn’t dare to look at her.
"Sir, may I have your last name?" Donovan Xavier asked, sitting beside Chloe.
The man’s long lashes drooped slightly, masking the emotion in his eyes. He was silent for several seconds before his lips parted. "Hale."
Donovan’s voice was deep. "Mr. Hale, thank you for saving my father-in-law. If you ever need any help in the future, don’t hesitate to find me at the Xavier Group."
The man didn’t respond. He raised his eyes, casting a seemingly casual glance at Chloe Preston, but with great caution. Just one glance, and then he looked away, terrified of being noticed.
Chloe Preston noticed. "Mr. Hale, do you... know me?" she asked.
The man nodded.
Chloe Preston frowned.
Was he a customer I helped at the jade shop? But I have no impression of him at all.
"Yesterday, I accidentally bumped into you," the man said flatly. "I suppose that counts as us meeting."
The crease between Chloe Preston’s brows smoothed out.
「Two and a half hours later.」
CLICK.
The door to the operating room opened. Julian Xavier walked out, tall in his surgical scrubs. He lifted a hand to take off his mask and let out a slow breath.
Chloe Preston immediately rushed forward. "Dr. Xavier, how is my dad?" she asked anxiously.
The other man also stepped forward, a flicker of worry in his eyes.
Julian Xavier’s voice was calm and steady. "You can relax. The surgery went very well, and your father is out of danger. He’s temporarily unconscious, but there’s no need to worry."
Chloe Preston breathed a sigh of relief.
Even though she’d said she was done with Wyatt Quinn, he was still the man she had called "Dad" for over twenty years. When his life was on the line, it was impossible for her to remain indifferent.
Chloe Preston turned, intending to thank the man who had brought her father to the hospital again, but he was nowhere in sight.
She looked up, carefully scanning the area. "Why did he leave so suddenly?"
"Perhaps he didn’t want us to thank him," Donovan Xavier remarked.
Chloe Preston pressed her lips together. "Well, he’s a good person. I hope he has a safe and peaceful future."
「Six days later.」
The hospital room was brightly lit.
Wyatt Quinn was propped up on the hospital bed. His head was wrapped in bandages, he wore a neck brace, and his right leg was in a cast. His complexion was waxy and yellow, and his hair was threaded with much more gray, making him look as if he had aged ten years. He looked pitiful and haggard.
"Chloe," Wyatt Quinn said, looking at her and managing a slight pull of his lips. "I never thought you’d still be willing to come take care of your dad. I thought you would never see me again."
As he spoke, his eyes glistened with moisture.
Chloe Preston sat in a chair, her expression cold and indifferent as she quietly peeled an apple. Once it was peeled, she set down the fruit knife. Wyatt Quinn instinctively reached for it. "Thank you."
"I peeled it for myself," Chloe Preston said blandly.
Wyatt Quinn was left speechless. He silently drew his hand back, pressing his lips together as he lowered his gaze.
"There’s soup on the table. The maid made it. You can have it."
Wyatt Quinn’s voice was choked with emotion. "Chloe, you’re such a good daughter, still caring for your dad."
Chloe Preston gave a short, mirthless laugh. "I’m not as good as you think. I just think it’s pitiful that you’re all alone. The moment you’re discharged from the hospital, I’m done with you."
"My dear daughter, I know you’re still angry," Wyatt Quinn said. "But I’ve really stopped gambling! If you don’t believe me, go ask at the casinos! I haven’t set foot in one for days!"
Chloe Preston’s tone was unwavering. "Whether you gamble or not has nothing to do with me. If you win, the money is yours. If you lose, you bear the consequences yourself."
Just then, the door to the hospital room clicked open. Julian Xavier walked in, dressed in a white coat. With a faint smile on his lips, he looked refined and composed.
Chloe Preston stood up and offered a polite smile. "Dr. Xavier."
Julian Xavier walked over. "You’re pregnant, please sit down. I’m here to do a check-up on Mr. Quinn."
Wyatt Quinn looked him up and down. "So, I hear you’re the brother of Chloe’s boyfriend, is that right?"
Julian Xavier paused, his expression unreadable. "Yes."
"So, does your family like my daughter?" Wyatt Quinn pressed. "Her belly is getting bigger. Why hasn’t the Xavier family married her yet?"
Chloe Preston shot him a warning look. "Why are you asking that? Just drink your soup."
Wyatt Quinn glared back at her before turning to Julian again. "You don’t like her? Why not? My daughter is wonderful! She’s educated and makes her own money!"
For a moment, Julian Xavier didn’t know what to say.
Wyatt Quinn’s lips thinned. "Is it because of me? Because she has a deadbeat dad like me?"
Julian Xavier offered a gentle laugh. "Mr. Quinn, please don’t overthink things. Our family is very fond of Dr. Quinn. My older brother will be marrying her soon."
"The sooner the better," Wyatt Quinn said. "Any longer and the baby will be here."
Chloe Preston lowered her eyes and remained silent.
It wasn’t so easy to get married. The Xavier family hated her; they would never accept her. Three days ago had been Rosalind Rowan’s birthday. That evening, Caleb Xavier had specifically called Donovan, telling him to prepare a gift and come home for dinner. Donovan had refused, sulking and stubbornly digging in his heels. They argued for a long time until, in the end, Caleb’s heart condition flared up again, and he fainted from the pain. Ian Xavier had called to berate Donovan, calling him unfilial and accusing him of being bewitched by a home-wrecker, which had broken the entire Xavier family’s heart. Still, Donovan hadn’t gone back. He had stayed at The Xavier Residence, standing by the floor-to-ceiling window and watching the rain all night.
Just then, a message lit up her phone screen.
[Donovan Xavier: Baby, are you still at the hospital? I just finished a meeting, I’ll come pick you up.]
An unconscious smile touched Chloe Preston’s lips as she replied:
[Chloe Preston: No need, I have the driver. You can just head back to The Xavier Residence or go hang out with Leo Sterling and the guys.]
The reply was instantaneous:
[Donovan Xavier: I’m coming to get you. I miss you.]
[Donovan Xavier: I want to see my Chloe as soon as possible, hold you in my arms, and kiss you properly.]
So cheesy.
They had just seen each other at noon; they hadn’t even been apart for that long.
A wave of sweetness washed over Chloe Preston’s heart, and her expression softened.
She typed back:
[Chloe Preston: Okay, I’ll wait for you. Drive safe.]
Julian Xavier noticed her smile. His own expression remained unreadable as he asked casually, "My brother?"
Chloe Preston looked up, startled for a moment before laughing. "How did you know?"
"Who else could make you smile that happily?" Julian replied.
The tips of Chloe Preston’s ears turned faintly red.
He was right. Even after being with Donovan Xavier for so long, her mood was still swayed by his every word and action.
Julian Xavier’s gaze fell, and he noticed a dazzling, luxurious ring on her finger. His eyes dimmed slightly.
"You love my brother that much?" he asked.
Chloe Preston didn’t hesitate. "Yes," she nodded.
"It has to be him?"
"Yes."
Wyatt Quinn shuffled closer to the edge of the bed and piped up, "My dear daughter, I actually think President Sutton is a pretty good guy. He’s the one who gave me all that money I lost. Why don’t you..."
Before he could finish, Chloe Preston shot him a sharp glare.
Wyatt Quinn flinched and immediately fell silent.
「Twenty-five minutes later.」
Chloe Preston walked out of the hospital and took a deep breath of fresh air as she stood by the entrance, waiting for Donovan to arrive.
She was flanked by two or three bodyguards who scanned the surroundings, ensuring her safety.
Feeling a bit weary, Chloe Preston leaned gently against the wall.
DING.
Her phone screen lit up with a notification. Chloe Preston opened it. It was an anonymous text message, and she glanced at it casually.
[Leave Donovan Xavier, or you will die a horrible death.]
Chloe Preston’s pupils contracted. She clutched her phone tightly, her eyes instinctively darting around her surroundings. There was nothing out of the ordinary.
Seeing her expression, one of the bodyguards asked in a low voice, "Madam, is something wrong? You don’t look well."
"It’s nothing," Chloe Preston replied.
DING.
Another text message arrived immediately.
[This isn’t a joke. Leave, and you might live!]
Chloe Preston’s brows furrowed tightly. She stared at the screen for a long time, a sinking feeling in her gut telling her this was real.
For some time now, she’d had the unsettling feeling that someone was secretly watching her. Who was it? Who wanted to harm her? And who sent this anonymous message?
Suddenly, a large, well-defined hand gripped her arm.
