Chapter 101: Her Last Breath

The sound of knocking against the wood echoed around a hallway before the commanding hunter grabbed the knob and opened the door.

"Excuse me for barging in, but this is an important matter," he announced, making some space for Alex who was close to Scarlet’s side, and behind them was Melisa who kept carrying her twin brother all the way.

Nurse Jilly, still on duty, was inspecting her patient’s throat and snapped her head toward the door when she heard them open.

The doctor usually checked on patients and made prescriptions, but the number of people who needed medical attention was too great.

While he was away, nurses had to take over small tasks like this.

"Can you please wait outside, I have another- oh my...!" Jilly clapped her hands together and covered her mouth after seeing in what kind of state the honorable Scarlet Willison was.

"W-what happened?" She asked, rushing towards the group and leaving the patient who was carefully observing and listening to the whole situation.

Jilly immediately went to provide support to the female hunter who was swaying from left to right.

Along with the way Scarlet was holding herself, it was hard to miss her extremely pale face with purple bangs under her eyes.

"It’s... A long story," Alex pressed his lips together, forming a nervous grin and looking aside, but no one found him amusing.

Scarlet wanted to shove the nurse aside, she didn’t want any help, but that would be crossing a line in ethics.

She held the medical personnel in higher regard than some of the hunters, especially Alex and Luciel - if she could even call him that.

Letting out a sigh, Scarlet allowed Jilly to help her, leading her toward an empty bed and helping her sit down.

It was then when she finally relaxed slightly that she started to feel worse again.

Without further ado, Jilly went to check Scarlet’s weak pulse.

She grabbed her wrist which was cold to the touch and went to search for the pulse, barely managing to find it.

"Wait here," Jilly instructed, going to get her digital sphygmomanometer, "You can place the other patient on the other free bed," she added, not wanting the poor fragile girl to hold the unconscious person all this time while she was checking on Scarlet.

Jilly was so focused on Scarlet, who was her top priority, that she didn’t even take into account Melisa’s wine-red eyes.

"A-all right..." Melisa stuttered, being a little insecure since she couldn’t see how would this play out.

Unlike the nurse, the poor patient had all the time in the world and shivers went down his spine, but one glance from the vampire was enough to keep his mouth shut.

Melisa could hear the change in the unknown man’s heartbeat and sent him a glare from the corner of her eye before raising her head in the air proudly after spotting fear in his eyes.

When she reached the bed and her back was facing the others, her stone expression changed and with gentle warmth, she placed Kai down on the clean, white sheets that were covering the bed before sitting down beside him, scanning the room with a glass look.

Ignoring Melisa, Jilly continued Scarlet’s check-up.

While measuring Scarlet’s blood pressure, she was counting her breaths as well which exceeded twenty-three per minute.

"How is she?" The commanding hunter stepped forward, afraid about the tiny possibility of losing Scarlet. She was necessary if they were to lead the others to safety eventually.

"She’s doing very badly..." Jilly shook her head. Her vital signs weren’t good, her skin was pale, sweaty, and cold to the touch. Her heartbeat was over one hundred and twenty-four beats per minute, rapid, shallow breaths, dizziness...

"Will she make it?"

"This is not in my work description, but we don’t have time to worry about that while the doctor is unavailable." In desperate times like this, it wasn’t the time to worry about qualifications if she could do something to help.

Raising her head, she noticed the worried expression on the hunter’s face and Alex biting his fingernail in the corner. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

’Oh Luciel, you really overdid it now...’ His heart was torn between his best friend and Scarlet who was fighting for her life, but even while knowing what was Luciel capable of, he couldn’t just leave him. He was a victim in all of this in the end.

"I’ll do everything I can until the doctor arrives," Jilly tried to calm down the guys, worrying and doing nothing wouldn’t help them.

"And can you please bring me the cart over there?" She pleaded, pointing at it and returning her attention back to Scarlet.

The nurse kneeled down and placed her hand on her patient’s knee, she could see the distress and confusion in Scarlet’s eyes despite how hard she was trying to hide it.

Right now, all of Scarlet’s symptoms indicated blood loss, but she couldn’t see any big injuries on her that would confirm her diagnosis.

"Scarlet, how are you feeling right now?" She asked, hoping to get an answer from her and more information about her current state.

There was some silence between the two while Scarlet was debating if she should reveal her current condition or not. She couldn’t afford herself to be down during this whole fiasco, but finally, she gave in since the one who was asking her was the nurse.

"Dizzy... And my head hurts like bitch..." She finally answered, placing her head on her forehead.

"Any chest or abdominal pain?" Jilly continued to question, glancing at the hunter who brought her the cart with some medical equipment.

"There’s an uncomfortable one in my chest," As Scarlet spoke those words, she unconsciously moved her hand from her forehead to the top of her chest.

"I see..." Jilly muttered, getting up so she could take and prepare everything she needed from the cart to establish vascular access.

Lifting up Scarlet’s sleeve, she placed a tourniquet above her elbow and instructed her to start pumping with her fist so she could palpate the veins.

When she found a vein that could be punctured, Jilly disinfected the area and took the cannula, pricking the skin and entering inside the vein.

Without wasting any time, she injected the IV fluid into the cannula and made it so it would slowly start to drip.

"It would be for the best if you would lay down and rest," the nurse instructed, there was nothing else she could do for her without a doctor.

The IV fluids were harmless, but she couldn’t administer a blood transfusion.

"Fine," Scarlet’s voice was sharp, the unsatisfied look in her eyes seemed like she was going to disobey, but instead, she complied and laid down, placing her hands on her stomach.

Scarlet’s eyelids slowly started to close again, but Jilly wasn’t done just yet.

She kept thinking about just what could have brought the big powerful hunter into this state unless...

Hesitantly, Jilly went to move Scarlet’s red hair from one side of the neck and then the other, but what she saw next made her hold her breath and the head hunter had a similar reaction, with his eyes wide open.

Upon seeing the reaction of the head hunter and Jilly, Alex froze in place, having a bad feeling about this.

He turned his head towards Melisa who never saw him so serious till now.

"Melisa, take Kai and follow me, be quiet so they don’t notice," he whispered to her, getting closer to the door.

There was no way an ordinary human could hear what he had said just now, but Melisa wasn’t a human to begin with.

’Can we get a break...’ She nodded, knowing what Alex was implying. If Scarlet tells the truth, they are screwed, so it would be for the best if they would start running now.

Being careful not to make a sound, Melisa carried Kai outside the room, using the moment where the other two’s focus was on Luciel’s bite marks on Scarlet’s neck.

"Scarlet, listen, we are going to help you, but you need to tell us, what happened?" Jilly asked. This could turn into a big deal if there was a vampire capable of defeating her.

At least the bite marks were solid evidence that Scarlet suffering from blood loss.

Scarlet slowly turned her head to look at the two, but they were spinning along the whole room.

"Luciel..." She started, sounding weak with every passing moment, "he did this..."

As Scarlet spoke, the nurse noticed that something didn’t feel right and quickly went to check her pulse.

"Her pulse is getting weaker! Scarlet! Stay with us!" She shouted, patting her cheeks slightly, trying to make her stay awake.

"Scarlet!"

As Jilly shouted, the head hunter’s world became blurry and his ears started to ring. The color on his face disappeared as all the blood washed away.

The nurse jumped onto the bed and started a mouth-to-mouth resurrection technique, ’The doctor will be here soon...’ She kept lying to herself, despite knowing the truth - he would never come.

All of their efforts were in vain as Scarlet released her last breath...
