Chapter 57: Trouble on the Way

Hearing the commotion, both Scarlet and Alex stopped their cars. Scarlet was the first one to come out and Alex did the same a little bit later.

"What’s going on?" Scarlet demanded an answer, crossing her arms as she stared at Luciel and Melisa, ignoring the kids that came out of the vehicle, wanting to hear why they stopped.

"Zombies," Luciel answered, having a calm look on his face as he scanned the area.

Upon hearing the news, the kids got closer to one another, feeling worried about their safety and those who were protecting them, especially Luciel who was here with them ever since the rescue.

"Great," Scarlet muttered under her breath, looking aside since she didn’t want to show her concern in front of the kids.

"How long do we have until they reach us?" Alex was the one to ask now, regretting that he decided to stop wearing his shiny armor after a certain incident.

"Judging by the sound, five minutes." Melisa started to look around, feeling uncertain at her estimate. The noise wasn’t coming only from one direction, they were surrounded.

There, in the distance, the party could already see human shapes getting closer, with their arms forward.

"Kids! Get inside the car, now!" Luciel issued an order, raising his voice to show the urgency of the situation.

He would be lying if he said that he wasn’t worried. One bite would mean death unlike when it came to vampires.

Hearing the urgency of the situation, the kids quickly rushed into the cars, occupying all seats, including the driver’s one.

Thanks to the size of the two cars, all thirteen children managed to squeeze in, some had to sit on each other’s knees, but they were in, that was important.

Luciel quickly went to close the doors and took out his sword, getting closer to Helen. "Stay close to me." He said, tightening the grip around his sword while his heartbeat started to speed up.

Helen didn’t know how to fight and the cars were full, so she was forced to stay outside.

"Oh my god..." 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

Luciel glanced towards Alex once he spoke those words and looking a little bit further, he could see twenty zombies coming toward them.

"Alex, take that side with Melisa!" Luciel ordered, pairing him with the vampire since Alex should had the best teamwork with her since he was the most accepting when it came to vampires since his best friend was one of them now.

Hearing more sounds coming from the east, Luciel turned his head, there were around ten more zombies coming their way.

"I’ll take those alone," Scarlet said before Luciel could issue another order. She was confident enough in her skills and so was Luciel. It was only because of this that he didn’t protest.

"George, Dash," Luciel and Scarlet looked at each other once they spoke their names at the same time, leaving the two behind them feeling confused since they didn’t know who to listen to since the two of them were fighting for control.

"Provide support to the rest of the team, make sure that the zombies don’t break inside the cars." She ordered, taking out her sword and putting it in front of her, preparing for the dangerous battle.

"No, they will protect the west, more are coming." Luciel intervened since he could hear more of them approaching.

It took a few moments, but another group of ten zombies was visible now.

Luciel tried to count the number of enemies to see what they were dealing with. Melisa and Alex had around twenty. Scarlet had ten and George and Dash also had the same number as her. Overall, the six of them had to battle against forty zombies that were around them.

"I’ll protect the kids and watch your back," Luciel added, wanting to avoid this fight. Unlike the others who had Blood Cultivation and divine art, he had nothing except his sword.

He wasn’t afraid, but this was a fight where one bite could mean the end and he was not ready to die just yet.

Scarlet clicked her tongue after hearing this, she didn’t feel happy about having a vampire as a backup, just working with two of them was below her honor.

"I heard that!" Luciel warned Scarlet when he heard her "tch", wanting to make her aware of the superior senses that he now possessed, but the time for arguments was over.

When the zombies came close enough, a fierce battle had started with all sides engaged in battle, giving everything they got.

The first one to make the move was George who bestowed a divine blessing upon the humans of the party, skipping the vampires since no one knew what an effect it would have on them.

"Gentleman." Scarlet swung with her sword, pointing it forward.

"Attack!" She ordered, rushing into the danger, starting to chant her divine art, making her sword glow up.

Everyone started to move except Luciel who observed the situation.

They seemed to be fine, cutting through zombie’s hearts and slashing their heads, but it seemed like they were missing something.

Luciel would slash the occasional zombies that would come his way while glancing toward the rest.

When everything seemed to be over, it felt like darkness fell in front of Luciel’s eyes when he saw the scene in front of him.

"More incoming!" He shouted, warning the rest that were busy in their own battles.

Alex stopped to fight for a moment, letting Melisa do all the work, but when he saw hundreds of them approaching, he felt like falling to his knees.

"My god..." He felt frozen like a deer, thinking that this might be it.

Noticing Alex’s reaction, everyone stopped for a second to see their impending doom.

"Don’t give up! We can do this!" Scarlet encouraged her party, but just by listening to her heartbeat, Luciel could tell that she was afraid.

"Change of tactics! Into the circle, Helen in the middle!" Luciel shouted, walking closer to the rest.

In this situation, no one, not even Scarlet dared to say anything against him. They would need a miracle to get out of this alive.

Looking around, the group could see zombies that they thought they had killed previously slowly getting up.

"Guys, cut their heads off, that’s the only way you can kill them!" Helen reminded them after seeing that the hunters didn’t follow the basics when it came to fighting against zombies.

Once the new wave of zombies approached, the fight continued.

With the help of her sound waves, Melisa was doing everything she could to push back the zombies and try to explode their heads while Alex was making sure to keep them away from her.

Dash was cutting the zombies’ heads with his axe while George was providing support and was slowing them down with the use of divine arts while providing a boost to his party members.

But while all of this was happening, Scarlet seemed to struggle. She was getting overwhelmed and didn’t have enough time to chant the art for her divine lighting.

Seeing how she was being overrun, Luciel was forced to go and help her, being forced to leave Helen alone.

He slashed the zombie’s head that tried to get the taste of Scarlet, buying her time to chant her art, frying the zombies, paralyzing them for a brief second, and allowing Luciel to finish the job.

"Aaahh!"

During the battle, Luciel heard Helen’s scream as the zombie broke through their defense.

It got on top of her, being a few seconds away from biting her shoulder.

"Helen!"
