The Crimson Reaper-Chapter 58: Awakening
Helen observed the battle while in the middle, staying close to Luciel while regretting her stupid decision to go outside the shelter in the first place.
All she wanted was to see those zombies up close to better understand what they were dealing with, but she never hoped to see this.
Seeing Luciel leave her side, a lump formed in Helen’s throat.
With Luciel gone, there was a hole in their defense and everyone was too busy to notice.
"Melisa!" She shouted, knowing that she would be the only one to hear her right now. "Luciel had to go and help Scarlet, take his position!" She ordered, pointing out the flaw in their formation.
Melisa strained her throat, sending strong sound waves to the group of zombies that were trying to get close while letting Alex finish the job.
"I need to take over Luciel’s position, try to hold on for now!" She informed him, having a tiered look on her face due to excessive use of her ability.
The battle had been going on for some time now and it seemed like it won’t end soon.
"All right, but please hurry!" Alex raised his voice, piercing the chest of the zombie before slashing its head.
Melisa nodded and turned her head, but just when she was about to head toward Helen’s side, her whole body froze at the scene, knowing that she wouldn’t be able to make it in time to save her.
"Aaahhh!" Helen screamed at the top of her lungs when she saw one of the zombies breaking through the formation, charging straight towards her.
Once it opened its mouth, she could see saliva dripping down from the gray creature. One more noticeable detail was that the zombie had fangs that were similar to that of a vampire, but Helen didn’t have any time to think about that as panic settled in.
She took a step back, her whole body shivering in fear while her life flashed through her eyes.
’Help...’ She thought, not being able to scream.
Without any hesitation, the zombie leaped onto her, scratching her shoulder with its claws, and pinning her against the ground.
Helen stared into the dark oblivion in its mouth, feeling its stinking breath. She turned her head away, closing her eyes shut, not wanting to see a monster in front of her in the last moments of her life.
She waited for the agonizing death, but it never arrived. Slowly opening her eyes, peaking through, she could see Luciel standing in front of her with his eyes glowing vibrant red, surrounded by a dark gray cloud of mist mixed in with electric blue color.
The moment Luciel had heard Helen’s scream, he raised his head, looking toward her direction.
A feeling of dread took over his body once he saw her in danger, about to become a zombie food.
"Helen!" He shouted, cold sweat covering his whole body as he was trying not to go into a state of panic at the sight of his wife going to be bitten.
Luciel started to run, fear and anger overtaking his entire body while he only had one goal in mind - save Helen.
At that moment, Luciel could feel a sudden rush of familiar energy, two actually, that danced together around his body. One was warm, energizing, and giving him strength while the other continued to expand like an endless space.
He could feel his Qi moving from his toes to the tip of his fingertips, wanting to get out.
With the feeling of pressure inside his body, Luciel had no option but to release it and from that moment, the battlefield started to change slightly.
A thick, dark gray mist started to surround the ground as it continued to expand, looking like a thundercloud.
Luciel didn’t know exactly what was going on, but he didn’t even have time to think since there were more urgent matters at hand.
"No!" Luciel shouted in panic when he saw that wouldn’t make it in time.
He extended his hand, with the palm open, trying his best to reach Helen, to grab her and pull her back, but what happened next was beyond anyone’s expectations.
A gust of thick mist escaped from the palm of his hand, shooting it right toward the zombie.
Hitting its chest, the mist had sent the enemy flying back, knocking it away from his wife.
Quickly approaching the zombie that tried to take a bite of his wife, Luciel’s eyes started to glow vibrant red in anger as he raised his sword.
"Only I am allowed to bite her." He growled and with a single swing of his sword, he detached the zombie’s head from its body.
"You all right?" Luciel asked Helen, extending his hand to help her get back up as he breathed heavily from the tension that had happened just now.
"Yeah... I am..." She said quietly, staring into Luciel’s vibrant eyes, but instead of fear, she felt at ease knowing that she was safe for now.
"Did it bite you?" He asked, touching her shoulders as he quickly went to inspect her body, searching for any kind of bite marks.
"N-no, it didn’t. Thanks..." She answered him, her voice trembling while sounding detached from the world due to the shock that she had gone through just now.
Luciel nodded and even if he would love to continue chatting with her, to reassure her, he had no time. He could hear the zombie’s groans approaching.
He looked toward them with the corner of his eye and quickly turned around, getting into the low battle stance, and swung with his free arm, causing more of the dark gray, ominous mist to appear.
There was no technique or anything behind his attacks, it was just pure energy and instinct. He could feel his Qi building up and when it reached the end, he focused on expanding it, imagining something like a large explosion and this was the result - a raw attack.
The mist pushed away the zombies, making them fall down. Using this moment, with the sword in one hand, he made sure to finish them off.
Still feeling the energy inside him rising, Luciel sheathed his sword and clapped with his hands, trying to gather it. This new power that decided to show itself in the time of need resembled to the same feeling when he would use a divine art, except that this time, there was no need to call upon it since it was his own.
Spreading his arms apart, he released the energy from his body like an explosion.
Below Luciel’s feet, mist started to gather before it ruptured all around him, pushing the zombies away from the group and allowing them to take a moment of rest.
"Melisa, help Scarlet!" He shouted toward her who stopped to fight, observing the situation and Luciel who, for the first time, displayed his ability.
’Ugh, why her!’ Melisa thought, nodding her head before rushing toward Scarlet to provide support.
She didn’t want to work together with that cold bitch, but unfortunately, she didn’t have a choice right now.
Glancing over Melisa, Scarlet clicked with her tongue in dissatisfaction but didn’t say anything once the vampire blasted away the incoming zombies that started to get up.
"Vampire. Inform the others. The support should be coming soon!" Scarlet ordered.
"How long do we need to hold up for?" She asked, looking up at Scarlet.
"Ten minutes at best. The rescue force went out immediately once they heard about the situation."
"All right! Hold on till I get back!" Melisa said to her before running off to do just as Scarlet had told her.
Even if they weren’t too fond of one another, they all knew that they had to put their differences aside if they were going to win.
